The folks over at 5.11 saw my denim showdown video, and reached out because they wanted me to take a look at some of their newer products. GOOD CONCEALMENT = GOOD MANNERS

"An armed society is a polite society" We've all heard the expression. But there are times when it is impolite to be perceptively armed. There seems to be a misconception about why some choose to exercise a higher level of concealment. It's not always about flying under the radar of the professional predator. Rule 1 of a gunfight is "Have a gun." It's not "have a full-sized duty gun" It isn't "have a sub-second draw" It's simply "have that Thang on you" Some are under the impression that access & concealment are mutually exclusive. In the most extreme examples, there may be some merit, but in practical day-to-day reality it's possible to strike an effective balance of the two. Support the channel on...

DRESS BELTS FOR CONCEALED CARRY (That Don't Look Like Gun Belts)

Belts are a popular topic in the concealed carry world. And why not? Second to the holster, it's arguably the most important part of literal support gear for your EDC load out. I started off my concealed carry journey with an FN509, which is the same size as a Glock 19X. While it shot great, as a smaller framed individual it was a little heavy and cumbersome in my waistband every day. It has since been "retired" to a quick access safe for home defense. I have tried concealing a Sig P365 XL since then. It was almost exactly what I wanted for concealed carry in terms of size and weight. But now the problem was that the increased recoil made it harder for me to shoot great. I have since opted to carry the P365 - 380 with the XL grip module installed. Yes, I made a compromise on caliber, but I carry it religiously everyday without thinking about it. I'm also pretty dang accurate with it. I would argue that I shoot it as good as or perhaps even better than my 509. Choices like this often involve doing what works best for you, regardless of what others think.

The short answer: There is no best. In audio equipment there is a tendency to design toward what can be measured, especially easily measured, but often at the expense of sound quality. In the firearms world I think we have a tendency to do much the same thing.

Excellent video! I've always preferred the 5.11 discontinued 74269 pants with the outer inseam & inside pocket, hidden zippered pocket on both sides. I buy them used off eBay and dye them black, dark brown, & charcoal grey(I hate their shades of khaki) I also wear the 5.11 jeans, I need a loose fit for Houston weather. Best EDC/gun belt in my 5 yr experience is KORE essentials.

Popped up in my feed so.... Milt Sparks, TT Gunleather, Tucker Gun Leather, DeSantis, Bianchi, 1791, and Bitter Root Gun Leather (Unique Art) to name a few that make strong side, cross draw, IWB, and AIWB. Good Leather like Sam Andrews in your experience takes a bit of breaking in. Kydex is used for primarily summer time carry with more sweat and humidity. Good leather can handle that but requires a touch more maintenance. I have yet to find a kydex system that does not require tweaking for awhile to get it to an acceptable carry. Another aspect of kydex it is not all the same materials. There are cheap plastic and those with proper quality, finishes on the materials used. Polymer FOM Clips are evil, only metal will do.

I can very much see what you mean. I’ve never tried to get my girlfriend into guns but she has asked to shoot them out of curiosity. I steered her away from the 9mm pistols and started her on a 10/22, a suppressed .300 and a suppressed .22 pistol. Then I let her shoot the sig she wanted to shoot first. She hated it, and that was the end of shooting for the day for her. When I saw this video title (with tuxedo and J-frame), I immediately thought James Bond, as he was issued a S&W Centennial Airweight as a secondary handgun to the famed Walther PPK by Major Boothroyd in Ian Fleming’s novel Dr. No. 😂 I completely empathIze with you being wary of causing premature wear and tear of your fine clothing by your carry piece. All of my suits, sport coats, and dress shirts are bespoke and I refuse to destroy them for the sake of defensive readiness. It may come as a surprise, but I actually carried a S&W 638 Bodyguard Airweight in a shoulder rig as a police detective all the way until I left the job last year. It was my “non-uniform, primary duty gun”. I mitigated the fraying of my jacket linings and dress shirts by equipping my 5-shot with smooth G-10 stocks. I’d have, of course, preferred wood grips like my Craig Spegel rosewood stocks, but I seem to have developed a sensitivity to wood on bare skin. 😅 By the way, I love your rack of suits or sport coats in the background. It looks like the full spectrum of crayons in a Crayola box! 👏

The only time someone said anything about the magazine pockets I had my phone in it (so the end of it was visible). I feel you man. A few years ago a whore at work told HR that I made her feel unsafe after she and I literally chatted for months both inside and outside work as casual friends... Or so I thought. They fired me via teams with no statement or resolution offered. There's a special place in hell for all parties involved.

I won't take anybody who smacks his fist into his hand audibly seriously ever. That's goddamn weird.

For me Best all around ccw belt is Kore Essential. I've tried all the major ratchet belt brands (I love these belts) and tried the HC and Tenicor zero belts that just work for appendix no owb and no full size.

That is the Monarch from Andrews Custom Leather. Of the shoulder holsters I've tried, it's by far my favorite.

Where I live (NJ), it is currently illegal to carry at work (private property, not open to the public). So, I don’t. In any case, the odds of needing a handgun are so low that there’s no rational argument for carrying a gun at most places I frequent. Yet, I find myself carrying when it’s more likely to CAUSE a problem for me than to SOLVE a problem. Such is gun culture - a contagious form of paranoia that is difficult to escape once a person is “infected”. Thanks for sharing this really unusual video, filled with multiple layers of lessons that were learned the hard way.

I will push back on this. Gun culture at large isn't driven by paranoia. The proliferation of social media has diluted what needs to be thoughtful discussions into sound bites & talking points, and we now have access to other people in a way we never did before. Unfortunately, that means that someone with a TON of expertise can make a seemingly authoritative statement that might not be appropriate for the context of the listener. Especially when the experts have spent their entire lives carrying professionally, and they're talking to an audience who live in environments where being armed is weird.

@@TheSuitedShootist I appreciate all of the hard learned lessons you have shared, the video, and the comments, including the ones with which I don’t agree. It’s very subjective to describe “gun culture at large” as being driven by some level of paranoia, or not. I’ve met people who carry everywhere, including where it’s illegal, and who have never left the USA presumably partially because they could not bring a gun. We are lucky in the USA to have more rights to defend ourselves than in other countries, but it does come with drawbacks. In my own case, I’m happy to be able to carry legally in some places in my state, but do feel it is more likely to CAUSE a problem for me personally than to SOLVE one. This is especially the case when I don’t carry selectively - i.e., when I start carrying almost everywhere, not just to places that are “higher risk”.
