"The Fitting Book": Could it help you??
I wanted to talk to you about The Fitting Book by Gina Renee Dunham, which was published last year. I know from our discussions in comments on previous videos that fitting is something a lot of you wanted to delve into, so I thought I'd start softly with a look at some resources that can help you achieve better fit. Is this book one of them? Watch the video for my thoughts!

Pattern hack: Pietra Pants/Trousers - NO ELASTIC!
Переглядів 3,9 тис.2 роки тому
If, like me, you love the style lines of the Closet Core Pietra Pants sewing pattern, but you *don't* love its elasticated back waistband, then here's a tutorial explaining how I eliminated that elastic for a clean/flat finish with an invisible zip closure. If you have any questions or comments please do leave them below and I'll do my best to get back to you. And if you'd like to make sure you...

It's Friday, so let's do #FridaySews! Find out what I've been up to in the last few weeks, including a review of a sewing course I attended, and what I've got line up on my sewing table (in theory) and what's next in the fitting and flat pattern adjustments content we've been talking about lately. Happy Friday! Special mentions in this video Jen, creator of #FridaySews: ua-cam.com/channels/Ov1K...
My fitting process: improve the fit BEFORE you toile, cut and sew!
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 роки тому
Today I'm introducing the 5 step fitting process I use on most new sewing projects to help me get a good fit. There's nothing I find more demoralising, when sewing, than spending loads of time making a garment only to find that I never reach for it because of some niggly fitting issue. Over the years, I have found that taking a more deliberate approach to working out the fit, and adding a few e...
Fusible interfacing: testing and tips
Переглядів 7343 роки тому
If you want to have more confidence that your interfacing will still be adding structure and support to your garment for a long time after you finish making it, then it's key to choose the right interfacing and apply it correctly. But once you've narrowed it down to the interfacing you think will be right for your project, how do you know if it's actually going to work well with your chosen fab...

Meet Michelle and find out more about what you can expect on the Michelle Sews UA-cam channel! Yes, you've probably deduced that this channel is about sewing and that I'm Michelle, but in this video I'll outline the 5 key themes that I'll be covering on this channel, and tell you a little bit about my background, to help you decide whether it's worth sticking around and subscribing! Outside UA-...
Thank you! I don't like wasting fabric on toiles, so I would love to get a better fit without them. Your video was helpful to remind me that I can fit as I go in addition to making adjustments in advance. I'm considering using a custom made block for my measurements to help with the pattern adjustments.
Thank you for the information. I have ordered this book.
Thank for sharing these valuable insights of the book.
I just finished disassembling some Pietra pants because of the bulkiness of the back elastic. This could be a solution to my issue if I add a few inches to the back piece and add darts and a facing as you've done. I think I can save these pants and make 'em wearable. I'd rather do the back zipper than the side zip. Thanks, Michelle!

Hi Michelle I enjoy listening to you. You have, whatever people need to have, to be successful at explaining and presenting this information with an easy to listen to style. I hope you will continue to provide more interesting videos.
You have a really personal way about you. I like that you come straight to the point and don’t rattle away like some You Tubers. I hope you are going to be posting more videos. You mentioned a tailoring book you used. I think it’s really helpful to provide reviews of books that you have I check these videos out a lot. Maybe that’s an idea for a video you could do.
Hi I have really enjoyed this you voiced the questions I have been wondering about how much ease do I need, do I want and where? It never occurred to me that it’s personal preference I thought there were hard and fast rules. The other thing you mentioned is how can I come up with a plan of altering a pattern to my measurements and for me is this a bridge too far at the moment. I hope you go on to cover this. After cutting out my first garment, a nightdress, choosing the largest size for my bust I couldn’t understand what was wrong with it but I knew there was something. In my reading I came across the information that if you have narrow shoulders but a large bust you need to choose the size of your upper bust and then do a bust adjustment. Fortunately I have plenty of fabric and can cut out the smaller chest size. Tips like these are absolute gems and I think these are the type of things people would like to know. I look forward to your next video .
Hi I have enjoyed listening to you talk about your courses. I am just at the beginning of my sewing journey and trying to learn as much as I can. I’m not interested in making bridal or evening dresses I just want to be able to adapt everyday patterns so that the garments I make fit. I am more interested in nightdresses lingerie and shirts and skirts. I have cut out a nightdress for myself and I’m learning about pattern drafting and making a man’s shirt. Any course advice would be welcome but I can only do online because I’m housebound and have poor health. I have been steadily collecting the tools and books I need. Thank you for providing this video I shall enjoy looking at the others that you have made.
Is this a useful book for fixing fitting issues with mens' clothes?
Super helpful! I really like your videos: clear, direct, well edified.
Thank you so much! This was a very helpful video.
Thank you for doing a thorough review of this book.
I truly thank you for such a wonderful video on a game changing book. I was debating whether I really needed it until I came across an issue while I embarked upon pattern drafting. I had purchased a few tools but didn’t take the time to learn how to properly use them thus my bodice work was a hot mess! She had a free hand out that I downloaded on the various tools including a “French Curve”. After viewing it then seeing it in the Amazon store I purchased it but was even more impressed when I found a video showing how to properly use it. Now my neck area and armhole’s are on point! Having the ebook makes it convenient to always have as a reference guide too😊
Very good❤❤❤❤❤
Really helpful.. it’s exactly what I need to do and for exactly the same reason. Thanks for working it out!
i just bought this book.. excited
Really informative and well explained. I appreciate the examples given. Thank you.
Just found your channel. Where have you gone? Would love to see more videos.
Thid video was great! I am looking to buy a fitting book but it is hard to know which is best for my learning style. Please keep reviewing books ❤
Thank you for this detailed review! I will definitely buy this book!
I agree with you. I think this is an excellent book. I bought the PDF E-book version today. This is the first time UA-cam has shown me Michelle's channel. Michelle, I love the print and style of your dress. It's nice to see someone so classy sharing their sewing skills and interests. We need more people to get back to handmade good quality and fitting garments.
Thanks for the review. Looks like a useful quick reference book which I’d use x
This is great thank you! Did you still cut the back facing on the fold if you put the zipper in the CB? Im wondering if you would still need to leave the seam allowance
Buongiorno, ci sono anche i pantaloni?
I just received a copy of this book and it is wonderful! The layout and videos (scan codes) are very nice. Visuals are always helpful. So happy you popped up in my feed. New subscriber and love your content😊. Thanks for sharing.
This is a very though review. Thanks .
I do agree, this is a great reference book. I Love it! I took Gina’s moulage course, witch is a great course too. I highly recommend both 😊
The course sounds really good - great to hear that you recommend it as well as the book. Hopefully it will encourage to check out Gina’s amazing work! Thanks for watching! ☺️
Wonderful, thank you. I’ve just made a pair of the wide legged trousers and would definitely prefer a zip and no elastic. Haven’t decided yet whether to put the zip in the side or back but can’t wait to give this a try. Brilliant!
Thanks so much for the review. Very helpful.
Fantastic review, just what I was looking for. Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Thanks just what I needed. Just wondered if there was a reason you opted for zip at CB rather than side- was it personal preference? Thanks
Thank you so much, Michelle! I really appreciate your honest feedback on my book, and that you took the time to explain it so well. This was a nice surprise to come across your video review. P.s. You have such a lovely and calm demeanor.
Hi Gina, thanks so much for such a great book! As I say, yours is now usually the first fitting book I reach for ☺️. And thank you for the compliment - likewise I always enjoyed your fitting videos on Instagram!
Gina, both you and Michelle have the same demeanor. I've been watching some of your UA-cam videos and you exude a feeling of quiet confidence. You don't rush in giving explanations and demonstrations. You've put a huge amount of effort into starting up your UA-cam channel and writing-related books. Over time I anticipate you will have a large number of subscribers and viewers.
@@sbaumgartner9848 Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. It really means a lot to me, and it brought a smile to my face :)
Wow! Just what I love: good, practical sewing info!
Can you post all the books that related to fitting?
Hi Tharani, I’m planning to review my favourite ones here in this series, but yes I’ll put together a list sometime soon!
I look forward to more reviews! I’ve now put this book on my Amazon wish list.
Thank you, I look forward to continuing the series too! I’m so glad it’s on your list ☺️

I got this book, I agree with your review, I think it's a great reference book.
Thanks Ginette - yes, it's definitely the one I reach for first these days!
This looks like a useful book and your review has been helpful. I have a couple of fitting books and have borrowed others from the library but this one seems to address issues not covered in these. Like one of your other commentators I had not heard of this before. Thank you.
Thanks Barbara, hope your library will one day stock this book, if it doesn't already! Such a good tip, to make good use of libraries too - also a great way to get a feel for whether you actually need a particular book or what the content is like!
Such a good start to a series! I really want to deep dive into fitting, but it seems quite overwhelming still. Your review helped very much, this book sounds like a very good start :D
Glad it was helpful! It definitely takes time to build your confidence with fitting - and you're right about the overwhelm at the beginning! - but if you can try and improve your fitting bit by bit over time, you'll definitely get to a much more confident place - and better-fitting garments!
Thank you for taking the time to generate this excellent tutorial. I retired and have been working on my sewing skills once again. I want to try this version of the pant next. You are skilled at explaining this pattern. Much appreciated.
Thanks Michele, I'm glad it was helpful! Good luck with the Pietra hack, if you do try it!
Such a great hack! Thank you gor sharing!
You're most welcome!
Thanks, I had not heard about this book.
Glad to bring it to your attention, Robin! If I hadn't already been following Gina on social media I'm not sure I would have come across it either.
You really explain well. Thank you. I will certainly follow you.
Thanks so much, Kjerstin! :)
Thank you. Very cleraly demonstrated.
Thanks Kjerstin!
I am so delighted to see you back!
Aww thanks Lynette! Such a nice community here :)
I have made these 4 times in linen with the elastic waist (3 shorts, 1 pants view B). I’m planning to make them again in denim & was worried about the elastic being to thick. I am going to try your method with an invisible side zipper. Question - did you have any issues with removing 1 inch from the back side (I need to remove 1.5” from the side - 4.5” total per back half) or did that work out ok?
Hi Lyn, no the side was completely fine - I should have mentioned that at the end, sorry. I’d recommend doing a toile though, even if you only make it in the shorts length that should let you see whether there’s any funky behaviour :) Good luck!
So clever!!! I made these with the elastic but I find the view unflattering if I tuck in my blouses. Thanks so much for this!
You're welcome - I almost always wear my tops tucked in for work so that's exactly why I had to figure this out! :)
Thank you for this. I have used another hack that left the back waistband in place (shortened) and put the darts (one dart on each side and quite a bit off at the sides) in below in the pant leg part. I had to shorten the rise quite a bit, since I am rather short waisted. I also put the zipper in the back. I think I will Try your hack the next time😄
Thanks Natalia! That method sounds interesting, I guess it depends how much ease you end up needing to take out and then where it feels easy to spread the difference across. The joys of sewing!
I tried to do this same hack recently but gave up - I attempted to force one VERY large dart which looked ridiculous. You’ve given me the tools to try again - thank you!
Eek yes beyond a certain point a single dart just can't cope! Glad this looks helpful to you and I hope it goes well if you try it!
