Para sa mga nagsasabi na ang mga Katoliko ay sumasamba sa kahoy at mga Diyos-diyosan. Narito po ang aming tugon upang inyong malaman ang kaugnay na kahulugan ng mga imahen. Sinabi talaga ni Lord kay Moses na: "You shall not make for yourself any graven image or any likeness... in heaven above or earth beneath, or water under earth. you shall not bow before them" (Exodus 20:3-5) Kung iintindihin ito sa konteksto ay sinasabi rin na bawal ang lahat ng painting at sculptures sa buong mundo. Ipinagbawal ang mga Diyos-diyosan dahil iisa lamang talaga ang Diyos pero may mga pagkakataon sa Bibliya na sinabi ng Panginoon sa mga tagasunod na gumawa ng mga imahen para maalala ang presence Niya. Isa-isahin natin. Exodus 25:18-20. Ibinilin ng Panginoon: "And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat." Ito ay para ipaalala sa mga tao ang presence ng Niya. 1Chronicles 28:18-19. Ibinigay ni David kay Solomon ang plano sa templo: "His plan for the golden chariot of the cherubim that spread wings and covered the Ark of the Covenant." Lahat ng ito ay pinagawa ng Panginoon upang ipaalala ang presence Niya sa lahat ng mga tagasunod. Ang totoong ipinagbabawal ay ang pagkakaroon ng maling Diyos o pekeng Panginoon. Sa aming mga Katoliko ay iisa ang Panginoon dahil ang mga imahen ng mga Santo, Santa at mga Banal ay paalala ng kadikilaan nila sa pagsunod sa Diyos. Ipinaliwanag ni San Pablo ang kahulugan ng "idolatry" sa Colossians 3:5 "Put to death the parts of you that are earthly, immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and the greed that is idolatry." Sa Kahoy? Sa Imahen? Sa Personahe? Makapal ang talakayan kapag pinag-uusapan ang importansiya ng mga banal na imahen. Ano nga ba ang sabi ng Simbahan tungkol dito? Mababasa ang turo sa Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC, 1992) tungkol sa tunay na saysay ng mga imahen ng banal na personahe. Malinaw ang doktrina na hindi ito paglabag sa pinaka-una ng sampung utos. Sa naturang aklat ay makikita ang: CCC Paragraph 2132. “The Christian veneration of images is not contrary to the first commandment which proscribes idols. Indeed, "the honor rendered to an image passes to its prototype," and "whoever venerates an image venerates the person portrayed in it." The honor paid to sacred images is a "respectful veneration," not the adoration due to God alone: Religious worship is not directed to images in themselves, considered as mere things, but under their distinctive aspect as images leading us on to God incarnate. the movement toward the image does not terminate in it as image, but tends toward that whose image it is.” Matayog ang pangangaral na ito.
