Welcome!
Here you find synthesizer and keyboard related content. I upload videos about music gear plus soundscapes that I make using my growing gear collection.
I had a dream. I wanted to play synthesizer music since I was young. However, several reasons prevented that. In the age of 54 and after some health issues I asked myself if it is too late starting with making music. My wife said: do it. In Feb. 2023 I bought my first instrument: a Yamaha PSR-SX600 keyboard. A great instrument... but not a synthesizer. A Korg Modwave became my first synth, and many others followed. I bought (electro-)acoustic instruments plus everything that I need for DAWless recording. Today I have more than 80 instruments, and I try to use them without learning lessons. I discovered the world of ambient and experimental music and soundscapes, and I love creating this kind of sounds as an autodidact.
Being a beginner, I would like to motivate others to live their long-time dreams. It's never too late.

Behringer JT Mini - Can it Dark Ambient? Dry Sound and with Eventide Blackhole / Zoom MS-70CDR
Is the Behringer JT Mini a good synthesizer for dark ambient sounds? I made a quick test. First you hear the dry sound (long release) and later with the Eventide Blackhole reverb and the Zoom MS-70CDR for delay.
Sound recorded with the Zoom LiveTrak L6.

I love the Solina plugin of the Akai MPC. Sometimes I just play a preset, without having a melody or song in mind. Just what I feel at the moment and what I think might sound nice. And sometimes I press the record button. This is such a recording that I would like to share with you. (Maybe I would try to reduce the buzzing sounds of the lower notes a bit when playing this preset again, but actu...

Another soundscape from a serious that I recorded in November 2024. I combined the Roland SH-4d synthesizer with the Sonicware Liven Ambient 0. The improvisation was recorded with the Zoom LiveTrak L6. A SONG FOR THE THIRTEEN VOICES OF THE TWO PROs - Crazy improvisation as homage to Terry Riley's LP

Don't take this video too serious... it's just crazy and not a blueprint for more. When I got my Behringer PRO-800 I finally had a clone of a Prophet synthesizer... not of the Prophet-5 but well, not too far away. Then I remembered that I already had the Behringer PRO-VS Mini. And the Terry Riley masterpiece 'Songs for the ten voices of the two Prophets' came into my mind. I like this album, an...

It was not the best experience when buying music gear, but to make a long story short: after some confusion and disappointment the Dubreq Stylophone Theremin found the way to my home. And it seems to work as it should (I know some didn't). So it's all fine at the end! This video is a check of the basic functions and how it sounds. It might help you considering if this is something for you or no...

[Headphones recommended] First test using the Eventide Blackhole reverb pedal with the Behringer Spice synthesizer. Can this new synth be used for dark ambient or space ambient sounds? I think it can! This is not a composition but a jam for learning how to use this synth in my setup. Again I am sorry for the shaky picture. I fixed the gooseneck at a different place this time, so there was even ...

This week I received the Behringer Spice (bought from my own money, no sponsoring). The video shows my first soundcheck without any deeper understanding of the synth. I am impressed how intuitive it can be handled; however, with better knowledge of the functions and workflow this might be a real beast. I really need a better solution than this shaky gooseneck... it's like hell. Sound recording ...

Listing of seqtrak is down to if your hardware can run the visualiser or not.
i heard a difference when you did .
Yes, there is a difference.
Yaaasss! Sounds friggin great! I'm thinking about getting a JT Mini myself! 🤘🐀
First moment I didn't like it... couldn't get nice sounds. But after a while it worked fine, and now I really like it.
Ok then. Practical and fun solution to some issues we've discussed. It's so obvious, but Xmas/new year clouded my thinking. I've just plugged the theremin into a guitar multi FX. The well regarded affordable "Tank-G" [most others should work] This now places audio into both channels of headphones. Now can ride the Vol control of either the theremin or the FX device to approximate function of the missing 2nd antenna. More importantly, Multi FXs with built in noise gates can help combat the inerrant distracting circuit hiss of the theremin. The fun of spacey reverb, more varied delays, and different modulations, overdrive, amp and cab impulses, etc are now on tap to turn this toy theremin into something more like a fully fledged synth.
This sounds promising. I wanted to try the theremin with a Zoom MS-70CDR but the idea with a noise gate is excellent. I have one from Donner and also the Donner Arena 2600. If this has a noise gate (I think so, but not sure), this might be an interesting multi fx unit.
I bought one, spent a couple of hours on it, then sent it back. Couldn't save loops or tracks on the App.
I never tried to save anything. I still have it and hope to use it someday but couldn't find any inspiration so far.
👍🏻🔥🔥
Thank you.

@ absolutely stunning, this works beautifully with your sound!
This was my hope. Many more photos are waiting to be combined with a soundscape. 😊

Lovely music! 👍🏻
Thank you so much.
Cinematic 👍✨
That's why I love this plugin and preset. Thank you.
Since I heard about this I've watched a number of different demos As far as i can tell the consensus is it's great fun. I've yet to see anyone achieve anything genuinely melodic on one though 🤣I assume that's a feature not a bug.
Good point. I would be very interested how experienced theremin players could handle this 'toy' (?) and make nice melodies. How much would they need the missing second antenna?
@@RainerMuenz I dare say the review would indeed contain the word "toy". I bet they would get a good tune no problem, just that without dynamics the subtlety will be lacking. There are a number of mods I imagine making on the Stylo, the first is adding a jack for a volume pedal.
@@BoojayDeeth So maybe a Mk2 version could see the light of day someday - this would be really interesting. I miss a power plugin most, to be honest, I don't like using batteries. But concerning sound and playability, I fully agree with you.
@@RainerMuenz 9v power was on the list too. An odd omission considering how easy it is to add. Perhaps we should start an "official" list.
@@BoojayDeeth Hope there will be 9V power on the forthcoming drone synth (which is the much more interesting release for me). But I agree, a list would be a good idea. Maybe something for the 'Stylophone Club' Facebook group?
🤭👍🏻
🤣 For those who know the Terry Riley album 😀
Thanks for your effort. loved it. You're not well...😃
Thank you. 😄
Just beautiful!👍🏻
Happy that you like it 🙂
👍🏻🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much for listening and your comment. 🙂
I have a problem with my synth mixer, maybe you can tell me if this one acts the same. My mixer has an effects send and receive as typical. My problem is the effects are added to the channel so if I am using say a ping pong trem effect I get 100% of the dry signal and a percentage of the effects (don't know what that percentage is). So what you end up with is mud pretty much. I don't want to put effects boxes on all my channels, who can afford that? So I bought another little mixer for just my keyboards and run that into my effects then back into one channel on the OG mixer. Thanks for the video, tho not too interested in how it works for recording, more interested in the live aspect.
I do understand your problem... unfortunately, I cannot say that this mixer will solve it. To be honest, I am not sure. I have experimented with reverb and delay and it sounds OK (not great), but to my understanding it is a mix of the dry signal plus an amount of FX that I can add with the knobs. First, I can choose the max. amount of FX sent to the channels, then I can choose the amount of FX used for each channel. I wouldn't think that I can get a 100 % wet signal as result. It's also possible to connect an FX unit to the mixer and use this instead of the internal FX, but I guess this won't solve the problem. Honestly, I do the same as you. I use a Behringer MX400 as sub mixer for my mono synths and send a combined signal to my FX unit(s), then to a mixer where I don't use further FX. So I am on the save side.
@ Thx!
If it has a quantize mode I'd be all in. Instead I lust after a Theremini I can't afford. 😎
The Theremini is of course a more professional instrument. But the price point...
Haunting atmosphere, love it !👍🏻
Thank you so much.
Danke! Ein super Video. Damit kann man was anfangen!

“Good luck” is right.. Still waiting for Stylophone to get me one that works.
😒
Luck is right. I wasn't so lucky sadly.
I am sorry to hear that. Many had bad luck, according to some videos I saw.
I didn't know this. Only had my FGDP-50 for a few days. Thank you.
You are very welcome.
Great soundscape! Sounds like a soundtrack to a dark movie or video game. I love the various different textures.
Thank you so much for your nice comment. I am happy if people like these soundscapes. I enjoy making them and I am often surprised when they are done. Not everything is planned.
Loved this, waiting on mine
Hope you will get it soon.
I seriously advise anyone really wanting a theremin as a serious musical piece of kit to invest in the Moog Theremini. £350 but so worth it for it's build quality and variety of sounds etc. Cheaper models just don't do the Theremin justice and end up as just novelty toys.
You might be right in this case. In my opinion it doesn't need to be s Moog. My other theremin from a small company called Golem-instruments works fine as a more serious instrument. However, it's me who can't play melodies but uses it for atmospheric sounds only.
I'll second that! I the theremini is perfect for beginners for 1 reason......... Quantization! I the difficult pitching is the thing that sends people running. But with that it not only forgives your bad intonation it will give you a wide choice of scales!
Thank you, good point!
Yep, I totally agree..
Posted something similar, then saw this. With a quantize mode this would be amazing.
2001: A Spice Odyssey
Now that's a cool description 👍😄
@RainerMuenz modestly... 😎😜👍🙏
@RainerMuen jokes apart...it truly reminds me some interludes from that film 👍 nice work 🤟
Thank you. Fantastic music in this movie. I should watch it again, last time is so long ago.
Stylophone did a theramin? Wow 😮
Yes, there was a pre-order list, and finally mine was shipped end of November. I think it's available in other shops as well, saw it at Thomann.
How many octaves do you get on the antenna, and is it possible to to tune it so the zero beat null point is about 50-60 cm from the antenna? What I'm seeing is that the pitch field is very small and the zero beat is something like 20 cm from the antenna, which will make it almost impossible to get the intonation somewhat correctly.
You are absolutely right. According to the manual 30 cm from the antenna the sound should start. I was not able to achieve that. It might work when using the audio out or headphone out but not when using the internal speaker or with other electric fields like my phone nearby. How many octaves? I don't know but not many in my opinion. I have a theremin from Golem-instruments which is much better with the octave range and null point. The Stylophone is interesting for me because of the additional synth, so all together it will be fine for ambient soundscapes but maybe not so much for real musicians. Playing melodies might be hard - or at least it needs perfect tuning and not using the internal speaker.
Plugging it into a grounded amplifier or audio interface or grounding it otherwise might improve things, also try putting it on a microphone stand if you have one. For soundscaping it is a better option then similar priced pitch-only theremins. It's a pitch only theremin and a Tannerin / electro-theremin (slide instrument designed by Paul Tanner that the Beach Boys used in Good Vibrations) in one package, plus the modulation and delay effect, it's quite a good deal.
@@dread_ratI will do as advised when I make a real recording within a soundscape. I can put it on a tripod with more distance to other electric fields. Will also try how it behaves when connected to FX pedals and a mixer. If needed, I have a DI box. So there are a few options. My other theremin has pitch and volume control and a knob for octave changes (I think, five octaves), but it's not a Tannerin. I like the flexibilty I have with both instruments. 🙂
Fancy! 🔥👍🏻
Thank you. Nice gear for a reasonable price.
this is nice
A really interesting synth in my opinion.
How does this compare to the beat thang
I am not sure, to be honest. The beat thang has more sounds but is much more expensive. Its sequencer might be a pro. But is it for real finger drumming? If not I personally would prefer the MPC for beat making, with all the expansion packs on the market. The Yamaha is my choice when drumming manually and not beat making or using a drum machine or goove box. Just my thoughts without deeper knowledge of the beat thang.

😅 Fair!
You should put something about "D&D Haunted Ambience" or something like that in your description or tags. May be a new audience there for you.
Great sounds. I was shocked how good the Spice is at Ambient. What's your VCA patched to?
It goes into the line in of the Blackhole and this directly to the Zoom mixer. No patching. The VCA is the line out. I was really surprised about the result.
@@RainerMuenz Ah yeah, I forget VCA is line out. I rarely use it.
The capability of this pocket rocket never ceases to amaze me, sounds fantastic
This sounds amazing, I really like the sort of dissonant bits youre getting towards the end However i cannot help but think that using a pedal like the Blackhole on a gear demo is sort of cheating when making Ambient tones.. You can fart into a Black Hole, and get ambient out of it.
Yes, that's right. The Blackhole is my ambient pedal of choice, so this is a realistic setup for me that I tested. Maybe it's more the pedal than the synth doong these sounds.
Lovely atmosphere!👍🏻
Thank you. A quick recording at an afternoon.
I own this gear but I don’t feel a connection with it 😵💫! Very interesting sounds here! Thank you for the suggestion!
To be honest, when I added this to my setup I thought I will put a string sound on top of a dark horror atmosphere. I really like the sound of this little box, more than the Solina sound, so I bought this instead of the Behringer. But then I simply tried how deep it could go... connected the MIDI keyboard, two octaves lower, hold button, and then tweaked until I got these bass tones. This was a bonus for me in addition to the strings I still enjoy playing (usually not used on my recordings). 🙂
Amazing! Subbed! 👍🏻 Love the little Microfreak
Thanks a lot! 🙂 Yes, the MicroFreak is fantastic. Sometimes I think it's sounds a bit much like 'plastic', don't know how to describe that, but depending on the use case and other gear involved this can work just great. Powerful little beast.
@ true! I absolutely agree !
👍🏻
Thank you again.
Awesome work!
Thank you so much 🙂
sold!
Excellent decision! I was sceptical at the beginning, but now I am so happy that I have bought this synth.
No over dub literally makes this thing useless .. what a shame
That's why they call it a live mixer that can be used in studio. But for studio use it's limited, unfortunately.
