Building (and crashing) a gap jump in Scotland!
Magura problem? No! Unable user is the problem period
I just went through this with a brand new set of RX4 calipers. I think the 2 bleed spacers that Hope supplies allow the pistons to come out too far and caused it to happen. Used a sram spacer instead that keeps the pistons retracted farther when bleeding and seems to be good soo far.
Loved my old Hope brakes. Hate my recent tech3 V4's. Not only have I never had them working well even from brand new out of the box (fitted by a hope stockest LBS) but vertically storing my bike results in fluid coming out the breather holes in the reservoir caps and moisture getting in, causing the fluid to expand, pistons pushing the pads against the disc and not turning. I've been told they should be fine for vertical mounting and that it was likely the reservoir gasket, but it's not. Just replaced them and they are still doing the same. Will bin them and go back to trusty shimano
I will have them... please..
Your reservoir(s) is/are over full. The pad binding is most likely down to temperature, its more likely than moisture (unless you had a really bad bottle of DOT) Also try de gassing the fluid before bleeding even new bottles are full of air
@JamesGoddard-i7s sound advice. I ended up taking them to another LBS after a failed bleed. They confirmed that 2 pistons on each caliper had swollen and seized. Replaced them all with the uprated stainless steel caps and new pistons and all is good again. No leaking from the reservoir cap breathers so far either
The older versions had very small bushings, but they improved for 2022/3 it seems the one I got with my giant trance x29 had 1.5cm polyamide uppers and 2.7cm (aprox it's hard to measure) polyamide with copper backing for the lowers bushings, (previously 1cm and 1.5 cm) they also changed the o-ring type seals on the seals heads of the air piston with low friction concave seals. Just for info. The only way to know if you have updated busings is to remove lowers and measure them ... Cheers
Good work. Dad’s are cool! I’m building one of these right now!! Same front pipe actually….love that powerband. Keep riding.
Use Shimano levers with your magura calipers and thank me later. Best brakes I've ever ridden and I've tried them all
Better than Hope Tech V4?? No way lol and definitely couldn't be better than Sram Maven the new new from Sram have you seen it lol ooolahlah
Have you not thought about emailing hope directly
Build shigura instead 😊
Ive always wondered because the levers on maguras look cheap af
Polish your bike
very useful video thanks 👍
How could you not figure it out, the fluid doesn’t come from no where..
What is the carb settings? I am also restoring a 1984 DT. Same colours as yours. Strong spark but only starts with carb spray in 😢
Honestly not too sure as I'm always messing with it, I would check for any dirt or muck in the carb as I had a few similar issues and that seemed to be the issue
I just got this bike today because it was really cheap but I think I made the wrong choice in size since Im 5"8 and got an S3 140mm but I don't really ride DH trails and my focus is more on green to blue trails should I return it and get the S2. I feel that it will put me in a better climbing position the s2 seems to have a reach or a regular trial bike with a bit longer wheelbase. I would really appreciate any poters you have. Thank you!!!
Your lever breaking off wasn’t a Magura problem. It was a rusty ass old brake whos owner never does any bike maintenance problem. Any brand would be a minor impact away from a break in that condition
Which bit of this (at the time) 3 month old plastic brake is rusty?
Judging by this video I’d say the part of the plastic and metal brake that appears to be rusted is the brownish part of the body that the lever attaches to.
In germany we say: "wenn man keine Ahnung hat, einfach mal die Schnauze halten" and i think thats beautiful. Its dirt.
@@dominikschwarz1735 apparently dirt is rust now😂
The banjo fitting is located on the wrong side placing immediate pressure to the smaller cavity first. I'm working on upgrading/ designing and machining a six piston design at a extremely reasonable cost. But good luck with those in the future. WWG1WGA 🇺🇲 Machinist for TRUMP 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
🤩 🎉 beautiful
the smallest 2 sprockets on my diamondback expresso are super loose. Could tis be the reason why?
I had an 84, in 85😂
Very nice, were they any more reliable when new?😂
What paint did you use for the exhaust. It looks amazing
It's just the factory paint. It's a ginelli brand system
cool review, had the same DT 125LC 10v. Traveled with it from Switzerland through Sahara to Nigeria. I added a 30l Tenere Tank for greater range and big bike look ; ) Very reliable bike! Good Ride
I bet that looked awesome, great little bikes!
Cool, where is it now?
Cool design. Have you tested it with a bike yet? Could you add some thin foam to the jaws so that it wouldn't scratch bike frame?
This was a school project from a few years back now, I did test it and it worked well. In the end I went with 3D printed sections on the jaws to prevent scratches
HOPE brakes are dreadful. I bought a new set of Tech 4 E4's and the pistons weren't working out of the box and one was leaking. If you do a search, there's so many complaints about HOPE's brakes. HOPE obviously know this is an issue because they are offering to service them free of charge, even when they are new out of the box.
Very nice, but maybe angle the camera ⬆️ more…
I do that for my grass strimmer that lots it's pull start. Lol. It's the drag bike style start.
If it works it works😂
My hope brakes are perfect.
The color is sooo sick. I love purple
Honestly one of my favorite colour schemes
Hello. Tell me please, how tall are you? Isn't the s4 frame too big for a height of 180 and a 35 mm offset?
I'm about 177cm and the s3 was about right, however it's all down to personal preference, the offset on the fork won't really affect the fit of the bike. You want to compare things like the reach and wheelbase.
Anyone know where to buy a bolt on fender for the 35 gold?
I'm honestly not sure about bolt on options but I believe mudhugger or rrp may have some options
Its Your problem. Not Magura.
Definitely a Magura problem. Theyre made of hopes and dreams
Nice mate. I’m going to be heading there this summer. I’m in North Carolina and was wondering about which bikes to bring. I have a Chromag rootdown (my favorite bike) and a Transition spire. I can only bring one bike. Which do you think would be good for not just parks , but riding everything during my month traveling riding as much as possible ? Flying across the pond with 2 bikes is ALOT if money. If I can swing it I’ll bring both. But if YOU had to choose, would you go hardtail or a 170/180 transition spire. (Btw, the spire is set up for more of a DH bike. I race DH on it as well as the rootdown, but the hardtail is more of my all mtn bike)
Personally I'd bring the hardtail, the large majority of trails here will be fine for the hardtail, it's only some of the big bike park tracks that you'd want the spire for. I had a big all mountain bike and I generally found it overkill for most trails.
@@Max_Rowley cheers. Thanks bud.
@@bullit4x no worries, hope you have a good time over here 😁
Might be pulling them too hard
AliExpress 😂
Hello sir, I am 5.11 l. Should I but a cycle with 18 frame and 29 inch wheels
29" wheels work for pretty much everyone, they're just not my cup of tea. As long as the frame fits you properly you'll be fine. I'm 5'10" and 29ers aren't aweful
Did it break by itself or you crashed? I once crashed my car and it broke! I'm going to make a video and call it car problems!
This is the equivalent of reversing into a tree at 3 mph and your front bumper falling off😂
Estos frenos es para gente que sabe montar....
So from what i am reading is these are prone to breaking very easily????? I just received mine and now rethinking sending them back.
They're fantastic brakes, as long as you don't crash hard on the levers you'll be fine, and the master cylinder is relatively cheap and easy to replace 😁
No they aren’t prone to breaking. I know more people running 20+ year old Maguars than any other brand. This guys brakes look like they’ve been sitting outside in a salt bath for ten years. Any brand would break.
@@Semprefi 20 year old metal maguras will be fine, as will new metal master cylinders. These are made of plastic hence the break on impact.
@@Max_Rowley just look at the thumbnail. You don’t see rust? What’s the brownish coloration on the main body of the brake then?
Why not bump start it
It can f up the gears if it’s been left for ages.
Also if I remember correctly there was stuff blocking the way out so we couldn't access the road
No matter how good/reliable brakes are, without maintenance you can't expect them to last forever, and gaskets are part of the maintenance
No matter how good/reliable brakes are, without maintenance you can't expect them to last forever, and gaskets are part of the maintenance
Was the end clip at dyfi? How did it ride there? I’m looking at changing my old 26” demo 8 for something newer to take to Morzine but also want it to be capable of hitting dyfi too
Yes I rode this bike at dyfi, it worked really well there, I also hit dyfi on my Marin san Quentin hardtail an year or so back, got a video on my channel of it😁
Rotostart
about $12-20 for new piston seals ( USD ) - there seem to be batches of these that came with not so great seals out of the box - I had one that seeped a little - changed the seals - now fine ever since.
I always get saved by the mudgurad😂 i just sit on in😂
It will in a crash😂😂😂
That only happens when you tighten your brakes too hard to the handlebars, they are supposed to move.
It could be that they are just crap brakes.
great video mate. got the exact same bike as you. brilliant little thing to ride, it just begs for more revs like most 2 strokes of its time. ive got original everything on it apart from a few bits in the engine. definitely need to upgrade to those mk2 front forks. mines a french import so fully derestricted. wheres yours from?
I believe mines an original English one, it’s an 84 frame with an 83 engine. We built it from scratch so I think it’s also fully unrestricted, tops out at about 70mph
@@Max_Rowley sounds lovely. mines been sat in a garage for 30 years so did an engine rebuild and changed a couple wheel bearings and it was good as new. i just managed to get mine to go 130kmph down an a road but thats solely because of the gearing i have on it. i wish you well on the bike, safe riding!
I never thought on see a Hope brake leaking that way, i always wonder that they're the best brakes ever
There are the best brakes buy one pair they will last you until the grave at least mine are I’ve got two sets tech 4 V4 and E4 and they both are really serviceable once components stat leaking but seals and re build them
Where I work we don’t usually stock lever and piston seal kits but we do for hope because they need changing so often. I love hope but their brakes are inconsistent and unreliable, dot fluid is rubbish for bikes even sram are coming to that realisation finally. All my bikes have hope hubs, headsets and bb’s but I can’t stand their brakes.
@@AnotherMrLizardtheir wheels are heaps of shit, too
@@StreamTin rims are okish but their hubs are excellent. I’ve build several fortus 30 and 35 sets for big lads on e-bikes and they’ve been sound. Why do you think they’re shit? And compared to what?
Thats because its an mt5. Great break, but made of plastic and can brake very easily because if this.
No, break bad! Me no like break! But good brake, yes.
