I missed this one completely. The gameplay seems up my alley and the theme seems really cool and unique. Maybe this video will go viral and they'll get the dollar based kudos they richly deserve.
@@marijumanji Fingers crossed!
the intro ROFL
@@chadryerson52 haha yeah...
Already on my wishlist 🤝🏻 I love the design of the pixel art. I will definitely check it out once I finish The Witcher 3
@@neoey glad to hear it! You'll love it!
Chained echoes both revitalized and killed my passion for JRPGs. I want more, but nothing that comes out comes close to Chained Echoes. If it had come out in 1995 it would've been one of the classics. Sea of Stars is the only one that comes close, but it's "less" in every aspect except graphics. Still great though.
Couldn't agree more. This was the first time I played it and it's an instant classic in my mind.
Great video! Subscribing just now, congrats from another (even smaller 😅) indie channel 💪
@@IndieGamingRoguelikesthat's awesome! I'll check it out!
@wearenoblgames thank you! 😊
Try Spiritfarer and Return of the Obra Dinn.
@@DEFCON_1 loved obra dinn!
Thank you! I don't know Gato Roboto but I'll check it out!
@wearenoblgames Gato Roboto it's like a Metroid. I haven't finished the game yet, but it's fairly easy and great!!
If you do a second video like this one, put noita on
I'll definitely check it out!
I was quite surprised when I looked at your sub count, I can tell your on the path to success, best of luck and thanks for the amazing list
@@MarkAlfredHW amazing you made my day thank you!
Sea of stars was pretty.... and that's it. Story was kinda bad, and gameplay was pretty boring
@@SimonSater oh well, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a Chrono trigger enthusiast. It did win indie game of the year too last year so...
You lost me early on when you said Sea of Stars had a "deep" story... but the rest of the video was enjoyable and informative. Keep it up.
@@alexwright1061 Thanks! You're right it wasn't as good as chained echoes but it was outside the 5 year mark lol.
Sea of Stars was a pretty game but my god the writing was terrible
Haha fair enough
Good list.
@@YannMetalhead very nice list!
This game is AMAZING!!!
@@ghostalone22 absolutely!!
I would also add Noita as it brings totally new view in the particle simulation, interesting and hidden story and just great staple roguelike!
@@wojtekpb99 I'll check it out!

@@froggoliath wow thank you! You made my day!!
Thank you for giving this amazing game some more coverage. So looking forward to the dlc. Glad to have some more stuff to do with the Kate game characters. I only wish they carried over into new game plus like triangle strategy.
Thank you! I'm not sure I remember Kate TBH, but yes I'm sure the dlc will be epic!
Indie masterpiece. I was blown away by this game!
@@hugbuzzard hard to believe it was made by one person!
Chained Echoes was lovely, I am glad I played it. I enjoyed Sea of Stars too, but Chained Echoes was better. Sea of Stars was like a sweet dessert, Chained Echoes more like a hearty meal. Both delicious, but one sticks with you a lot better. (Although Sea of Stars' music was fantastic and the aesthetic was spot on!) Sometimes though the combat system got tedious, for example when I just needed to get through an area I'd been before but missed something, or was hunting for a secret. I guess it's not perfect. But it was a lot more interesting than spamming A.
@@dirtywhitellama you said it! I also loved both games. Thanks for commenting!
I actually liked the game better before the mecha were introduced into the game.
@@tonyfriendly4409 that's cool! I really liked both battle systems. To each their own!
Me too. I loved the "human scale" feelings before the mecha.
Thanks for the in-depth review! This has been on my steam recommendations page for a long time, but I've never gotten around to picking it up. You describe the story as being like game of thrones, which I've never enjoyed. I like stories about good guys fighting bad guys, and I don't need sex, gore, or morally gray protagonists in my games. Can anyone elaborate on the tone or themes of the story a little more?
@@BCMZeroZero thank you, I appreciate the comment! So, yeah I said game of thrones, not because of gore (there's none really) but because it has a cast of several dozen characters who all have ties together somehow. It feels like the structure was inspired by those classic fantasy novels but it's completely original, and the overall theme is the classic JRPG: boy goes from killing rats to killing gods type progression lol. Hope that helps a bit without spoiling anything.
@@wearenoblgames thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know. It's a bummer I missed the winter sale, but I'll add it to my wish list!
This reminded me that I like JRPGs and would ays it's my favorite I've played. Waiting for the DLC to play through again and hoping the do a sequel to answer some of those lingering questions.
@@christopherhendry1633 oooh didn't know they were planning DLC!

Chained Echoes was so incredible to experience the first time. It's the Stardew Valley of jrpgs. Absolutely mesmerizing -- and the music, my god!
@@potatochipofdafuture I'm kind of jealous people have so much talent tbh
As a Stardew Valley fan, this intrigues me sooo much! I'll look into how I can play...
It was good, but I feel like Xenogears it suffered a little from a rushed ending... And yes I love it. But i think the ending should and could have been fleshed out better.
@@alinaitzal1173 definitely controversial for sure! But since it was made by one dude and I'm a solo dev myself, I can see him burning out after 7 years lol
I feel like the guy who made the game, got to 75% and was like, I cannot do this anymore, if it fails I'm screwed, and thus ended the game right there.
Interesting review. Being a gothic fan, this game has just been added to my to-buy list. Have you had a look at "Skald - Against the Black Priory" yet? It's a really cool indie retro-CRPG that came out in 2024 too.
@@waveplay3978 thank you! And no I haven't heard of Skald. Very cool I'll check it out!
Chained Echoes is my favorite. I recommend it to everyone.
@@flugal_rere absolutely amazing game!
happy new year!
@@chadryerson52 thank you my friend! You as well!!
Another great vid. Keep it up!!
@@fab613 thanks man!
This is a great game, but it is not a roguelike whatsoever. Even the game advertises as hack & slash. They include "with roguelite elements," but that doesn't make the game a roguelike. Caves of Qud? Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup? Those are roguelike games.
Next video : the hidden gem survival/ crafting game you ve never heard of, minecraft!
@@allanoipistoupe4843 too niche!
Absolutely loved this game, my issue is that when my friend and I tried to go to new game plus our save file corrupted and we didn't play anymore after that. Incredible game though
@@evelynnblacksilk5819 oh no way! That's only happened to me once playing the original ff7 on PS1. I was devastated...
@ It’s all good, I bought the game on switch and pc to support the devs as well as all the dlc
The first part of the video left me confused. As someone who has never played the game (which I assume is the primary audience here) I had no idea what you meant when you were talking about the powerups and their synergy. I still dont know if the two effects you listed simply work well together or do they create a new effect on your character. Second part of this video made me most interested in playing the game. The idea of assigning new combat roles to an ever growing family sounds neat. The third segment felt most well put-together, you clearly explained all aspects of the gameplay loop and communicated what makes it appealing
@@pawedziedzic3250 hey thank you for the meaningful feedback. I love hearing stuff like this because it helps me get better for the next one. Cheers!
0:09 I was just about to say that, well played
Great quality video, I've always seen this from the perspective of someone that plays the games pretty casually, and I feel like this has really improved my understanding of what balancing even is.
@rehellinenal thank you for taking the time! Appreciate you!
nice video!
Thanks!
"jumpcore"? Celeste-like? My man, Celeste just fills the exact definition of a platformer. Its just that most platformer games are simultaneously action platformers, while Celeste is a more pure platforming experience.
@@Rbum4 yes! Super pure! There's gotta be a word for that don't you think? I thought I was being funny 😅
@wearenoblgames *leans in and whispers in your ear:* "platformer"
@Rbum4 LMAO love it
Back then i tried Celeste for the first time and got totally stomped in the hotel and quit. Came back a year later, got addicted and went all the way to beat farewell and got the moon berry Still one of my favourite games, the control feels incredible and the feeling after overcoming a challenge is very addicting And almost all the deaths are very forgiving. You just respawns at the same screen without any run back. And most screen just consist of a few inputs, so you can just keep trying and dying and you know if you do these few inputs right, you will pass the screen Yes Celeste can be pretty hard, but it doesnt feel punishing, for the most part No golden berry tho, fuck golden berry lol
@@wasabilai9405 It is a very addicting game! I still hum the tune from the video all the time haha
Some of the goldens are fun. Like genuinely, the c sides are basically all one screen already and 1A and 2A are quite easy. After 1b, 2b, and 4a the pickings start to become a lot thinner though Except for one screen the jumpless golden is fun
Not gonna lie, I didn't think the base game was too difficult. Then again, I've done a lot of ori randomizers, so I have my fair share of platformer experience; some of the tricks I do in that game are frame perfect, and I need to do them constantly because its the movement. With 400-ish hours, it makes sense that celeste didn't feel overly difficult. Great vid, great game.
@@nathanreeder9716 i wish I had your skill!!
Here before this blows up 😊 Great vid!
@@jiupeper6204 aww thank you, you made my day!
Loved your video. Dude.. You should do a review of Caves of Qud, If you liked DE, you're going to love it.
@@eusouramiro thank you so much! I'll check it out, you're the second person to tell me this in a few days lol
My god this video is so boring and unoriginal

The game always died in the loading screen…
@@Lothrean I'm not sure what that means 😅
Yeah, it is great but I couldn't finish it because every now and again it would freeze my PC or go BSOD
Disco Elysium is the only game I've played where a kid made fun of me so hard that I died, and for that reason, it's in my top ten games list.
@@tessieward1976 no one fucks with CUNO!
I died so many times on the uncomfortable chair
This game is beautiful <3
@@Itomon it really is
Yeah, it might just be the best RPG of all time imho. If not #1, it's still in the podium
@@AR-yd2nd absolutely agree!
This isn't really an RPG because there's no combat mechanics. It's technically a point-and-click adventure game with DnD-esque dialogue skill checks.
@@neetpride5919 oh it absolutely is an RPG! Combat has nothing to do with it. Your definition of RPG is too narrow, but thanks for watching!
"RPG is when combat"
"Role Playing Game" I think you're playing a role in this game
Really insightful video. After having more fun in cRPGs with dialogues rather than combat I really should check this out. I am wondering what you are thinking about Caves of Qud. Game got in my opinion excellent world building despite filling the world with a randomly generated world history similar to how Dwarf Fortress does.
