Here is a short film from around 1958-59: apparently made by a tourist couple from France. There are a few other entries on UA-cam detailing their trip to America. Seeing it in color is a real treat. Amateur film cameras of that era did not record sound so this has been set to music (a portion of which cuts out in the middle). Here are some things to look for: The film begins with scenes from downtown Kingsport. 1:55 Supermarket Row 2:34 Kingsport neighborhoods 3:53 Dobyns-Bennett High School and students 5:28 DB football practice and loading up the buses for a game in Chattanooga 7:30 Parade in downtown Kingsport 8:04 Sightseeing airplane flight from Tri-Cities Airport 9:06 Gatlinburg and the Smokies 12:41 a visit to Oak Ridge 13:29 Natural Tunnel 14:09 This is the most fascinating section for me. The scene begins at the National Guard Armory in Gate City, VA and shows a US military honor guard and casket covered with a Confederate battle flag. This has to be the funeral ceremony for John B. Salling who at the time was recognized as the last surviving Confederate veteran and died in 1959 (the claim has since been disproved). Notice 48 stars on the American flag. Confederate veterans were eligible for US military honors, I think. 15:55 scenes from Kentucky, Virginia and a train sightseeing excursion. Enjoy (and please refrain from political commentary)

Some of the text says The funeral of a southern gentleman centenarian, he was 7 years old when the civil war ended. It will rain is what is said when they are beside the train. A cop has loaned his raincoat to Renee' is when you see the back shot of the lady in the raincoat.

That was the funeral in 1959 for supposedly the last Confederate soldier "Gen. John B. Salling of Slant, VA, who said he was born in 1846. He managed to get a Confederate pension starting in 1933. It was later determined by Scott County, VA census records that he was born in 1858. There's a lot out there you can see about this person.
