In June 1976, shortly after completing this recording, Gould suffered the first symptoms of a severe illness that began with difficulties of coordination and gradually affected his entire organism. Although he charted the illness in a journal, he never spoke to anyone about it: “It is quite possible, even likely, however, that it had a psychological base.” It had no noticeable impact on his pia...

@@Anna32.This video is an illustration for my post on FB ART OF THE FUGUE "Bach was forever writing fugues. No pursuit was better fitted to his temperament, and there is none by which the development of his art can be so precisely evaluated. He has always been judged by his fugues. In his last years, still writing them at a time when the avantgarde of his day was occupied with more melody-oriented endeavors, he was dismissed as a relic of an earlier, less enlightened age. And when that great grass-roots Bach movement began in the early nineteenth century, his partisans were well-intentioned romantics who saw in those massive, glaciated choruses from the St. Matthew Passion or the B-Minor Mass insoluble, if not indeed unperformable, enigmas, worthy of devotion primarily because of the faith they so triumphantly exuded. Like archaeologists, excavating the substratum of a forgotten culture, they were impressed with what they found, but pleased primarily by their own initiative in finding it. To the nineteenth-century ear those modulatorily ambivalent choruses can scarcely have fulfilled any classical-romantic concept of tonal strategy. And even today we who feel we understand the implications of Bach's work and the diversity of his creative impulse recognize in the fugue the prime forum for all of his musical activity. There is a constant proximity of fugue in Bach's technique. Every texture that he exploited seems ultimately destined for a fugue. The most unpretentious dance tune or the most solemn choral theme seems to beg an answer, appears eager for that flight of counterpoint which finds in fugal technique its most complete realization. Every sonority that he sampled, every vocal-instrumental combination, seems carved out in such a way as to admit a multitude of answers and to lack completeness unless those answers are forthcoming. One feels that just beneath the surface, even in those most gemiitlich moments when we find him vending coffee in a cantata or jotting airs for Anna Magdalena, lies a potential fugal situation. And we can sense his almost visible (or audible) discomfort when he must repress the fugal habit and endeavor, from time to time, to join that simplistic search for thematic control and modulatory conformity with which his generation was primarily concerned.. " ~Glenn Gould (Excerpt from "The Glenn Gould Reader")

Beginnings. At five he decided to become a composer, and was playing his own little compositions for family and friends. A lady of advanced years gives an eyewitness account of an occasion when he came with his mother to perform some of these pieces at a meeting of the Women’s Missionary Society at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, a few blocks from the Gould house. The lady remembers that Glenn was attired in a white satin suit with short pants and charmed the ladies. Perhaps the sartorial details in this recollection are a survival from those sickly-sweet stories about Sepperl Haydn and Wolferl Mozart which were read to unsuspecting children of an earlier generation, out of semi-popular music magazines. When he was six Glenn was taken for the first time to hear a live musical performance by a celebrated soloist. It was Hofmann. It was, I think, his last performance in Toronto, and it was a staggering impression. The only thing I can really remember is that, when I was being brought home in the car, I was in that wonderful state of half-awakeness in which you hear all sorts of incredible sounds going through your mind. They were all orchestral sounds, but! was playing them all, and suddenly I was Hofmann. I was enchanted. Here is a similar recollection, probably from a few years later: I remember, when I was a kid, I always associated the New York Philharmonic broadcasts, which we used to hear on Sunday afternoons, with great, vast fields of snow-white and grey. We used to go up north to the country for weekends and, about four o’clock in the afternoon, the Philharmonic would be on when we were on our way back to Toronto. And, in wintertime, it was usually grey-a sort of endless vista of snow, frozen lake, horizon, this sort of thing - and Beethoven never sounded so good. (Excerpt from "Glenn Gould. Music and Mind" by Geoffrey Payzant)
