Mendelssohn: String Quartet No.6 in F minor, Op.80 (Quatuor Ébène)
Переглядів 75721 день тому
Written to mourn the loss of his sister, Mendelssohn's final string quartet (and last major composition) reaches peaks of expressive intensity that have few equals in this medium. The sense of visceral grief that permeates the piece is effectively woven into Mendelssohn's trademark nervous energy and restlessness. The emotional trajectory of this work is such that the tragedy remains unresolved...
Rachmaninoff: Symphony No.2 in E minor, Op.27 (Litton)
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 місяці тому
It is no secret that Rachmaninoff was a great admirer of Tchaikovsky, and the latter's influence is evident in several respects. Both composers are indeed reputated for their great melodic inspiration, masterful use of color, all in the service of powerful emotional expression. That is not to say that Rachmaninoff's music was a mere emulation of Tchaikovsky. Rachmaninoff incorporated his own un...
Sibelius: The Bard, Op.64 (Sakari)
Переглядів 8946 місяців тому
The Bard is notable for being one of the shortest, as well as one of the most evocative of all Sibelius' tone poems. The striking atmosphere of this piece is achieved with elegiac harp solos on top of a rather minimalist orchestration, showcasing Sibelius' mastery of orchestral color and mood. Petri Sakari and his Icelandic forces deliver one of the finest recordings of this elusive work. The f...
Ravel: La Valse, M.72 (Ozawa)
Переглядів 2 тис.6 місяців тому
Ravel prefaces the score of La Valse as such: "Swirling clouds give glimpses of couples of waltzers. The clouds gradually dissipate: we can see an immense hall populated by a whirling crowd. The scene gradually lights up. The light from the chandeliers shines in the fortissimo. An imperial court, circa 1855." The narrative proposed by Ravel in this piece is divided into four parts. Part 1 - "Th...
Franck: Le Chasseur Maudit, FWV 44 (Roth)
Переглядів 1 тис.8 місяців тому
Inspired by Bürger's ballade "Der wilde Jäger", Le Chasseur Maudit (The Accursed Huntsman) tells the story of a Count who sets off on a hunt on a Sunday morning. As peasants are trying to dissuade him from pursuing his expedition, the Count does all sorts of blasphemy: he tramples on a wheat field, slaughters a flock of sheep and curses in a chapel. A sinister voice then arises from the woods a...

Schumann: Symphonic Etudes, Op.13 (Suzuki)

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the sleeper to end all sleepers. Japanese pianist Hironao Suzuki is pretty much a no-name outside his country, as the couple of recordings he made are only distributed in Japan by their local label Triton/Octavia Records. This is the perfect demonstration that great artistry has nothing to do with international reputation. Performances of Schumann's Symphonic Etude...
Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor, Op.22 (Kantorow)
Переглядів 9 тис.11 місяців тому
Father and son team up for what has to be the most theatrical and dazzling performance of Saint-Saëns' infamous piano concerto in G minor. The originality of this work mainly lies in its unusual structure: it's basically a giant accelerando, which starts with an organ-like prelude à la Bach, and ends with a blistering tarantella. Both pianist and conductor operate on the same wavelength in unde...
Bach: Fantasy and Fugue in A minor, BWV 904 (Ólafsson)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 місяців тому
00:00 Intro 00:13 Fantasy 04:08 Fugue Ólafsson's somewhat wayward interpretations and concept albums granted him the nickname of "Iceland's Glenn Gould". Besides the obvious marketing attempt behind this sobriquet, only time will tell if this is true or not. It is certainly true that DG's superstar has lots of personality, and the ensuing artistic results ranged from plain uninteresting ("From ...

Zinman has always been a very professional conductor. If you can find it, I highly suggest you listen to his series of Rimsky-Korsakov recordings, also with the Rotterdam Philharmonic on Philips/Decca. It comprises some of his best work as a conductor (the best Russian Easter Overture!) along with his cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with Yefim Bronfman.

This is an absolute masterpiece. The orchestration is visionary and the main tune is just unforgettable. As usual, the recording is stunning, easily one of the best I've heard! It's both rhythmic and very transparent, which is quite an achievement in this fiendishly difficult piece.

This is a brilliant quartet, can't believe I haven't heard it before (still hasn't quite knocked Grieg's G minor quartet off the podium as my favourite though). And what a vivacious performance!

Grieg's quartet is really intense, it would deserve to be more popular, for sure.

No one talks about the genius harmonic progression at 42:06 At 42:12, it follows the original theme present at the beginning. (IV -> V7) The sudden dissonance at 42:15 (V7 -> V7 b5) brings such a romantically nostalgic sound At 42:16, it returns to the original progression present at the start (V7 b5 -> iii) Rachmaninoff’s genius uses the bV7 to accentuate the ii, the melody literally sounds like a nostalgic sigh. I think this is a tritone sub of VI leading to ii (with some fancy voice leading) basically bV7 -> bV7 #5 -> bV7 -> ii Then III7 -> III7 #5 -> III7 -> vi -> vi6 Def my favorite part of this whole movement

Yo, another chamber music piece :D. I believe this was actually the last thing Mendelssohn wrote before he died with the other opus higher opus numbers as posthmus, Quite tragic sounding for a last piece. I got to say, this is the Most Beethoven thing Ive ever heard from Mendelssohn.

Wow, that was a seriously intense performance, there are times when they sound like an entire orchestra. And the ritardando they make at 25:38, as the first violin painfully ascends to this top C, I almost forgot to breathe!
