I saw this film a lot over the years. One night my mother was staying at my place. My mother had never seen it and she was really enjoying the film with me. I miss you Mom.
Vera and Mame: [singing] We'll always be bosom buddies Friends, sisters and pals; We'll always be bosom buddies If life should reject you There's me to protect you Vera: If I say that your tongue is vicious Mame: If I call you uncouth; Vera and Mame: It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will sit down and tell you the truth Vera: [speaking] Tho' now and again I'm aware that my candid opinion may sting Mame: Tho' often my frank observation might scald; I've been meanin' to tell you for years You should keep your hair natural like mine Vera: If I kept my hair natural like yours, I'd be bald [singing] But darling Vera and Mame: We'll always be dear companions Vera: My crony Mame: My mate; Vera and Mame: We'll always be harmonizing Vera: Orphan Annie and Sandy Vera and Mame: Like Amos and Andy Vera: If I say that your sense of style's as far as off as your youth; It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will tell you the whole stinkin' truth Mame: [speaking] Each time that a critic has written, "Your voice is the voice of a frog!" Straight to your side to defend you I rush; You know that I'm there ev'ry time that the world makes and unkind Remark When they say "Vera Charles is the world's greatest lush!" [singing] It hurts me! Vera: And if I say your fangs are showing Mame, pull in your claws It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will notice the obvious flaws! Mame: [speaking] I feel it's my duty to tell you it's time to adjust to your age; You try to be "Peg O' My Heart", when you're "Lady Macbeth." Exactly how old are you, Vera? The truth! Vera: Well, how old do you think? Mame: I'd say somewhere in between forty and the death! Vera and Mame: [singing] But sweetie Vera: I'll always be Alice Toklas If you'll be Gertrude Stein And tho' I'll admit I've dished you I've gossiped and gloated But I'm so devoted Mame: And if I say that s** and guts made you into a star It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will tell you how rotten you are Vera and Mame: Just turn your bosom buddy For aid and affection For help and direction For loyalty, love and for sooth! Remember that who else but a bosom buddy Will sit down and level And give you the devil Will sit down and tell you the truth!
Angela Lansbury does it better for me ...Lucille Ball is okay but it's not her best performance by any means...bea arthur is simply outstanding in this...my thoughts for what they're worth! ..
Angela Lansbury is so over-rated. Her voice has no color in it, and she has to force it all the time to project. Bea easily overpowers her. She is a fine actress, but is not truly a comic actress like Lucille, who demonstrates complete mastery of expression. This is also a very fine movie musical, as a production. Lucille had a good voice, but Bea's is just as limited, raspy and all.
The Woolcot and Benchley that Bea Arthur refers to in the song are two, probably famous in the 1920s where the musical takes place, columnists and critics, which connects to Vera being a theatre astress!
Lucille Ball got a lot of criticism for her performance in this movie but I always thought to be realistic about it considering that both women drink and smoke you have to think about it and say that she would sound the way she did meaning Lucille Ball
Antonio Atreides Lucillle Ball was too old to play the character of Auntie Mame. She was a 63 year old playing someone who was supposed to be in their mid-40s to early-50s. This is shown by the fact Lucy is almost always filmed in soft focus. She also did not have the vocal range to do justice to someone of the other songs. For someone who is supposed to be the life of the party, her actions are muted - watch the performance of "it's today" at the start of the film as an example.
@@billydeeuk Agreed. I love Lucy, and I even liked this movie, but Lucy was just too damn old to play Mame. It really didn't help that they used a thick layer of vaseline on the camera lens during closeups to try to hide her age.
I don't understand why people hate this movie I listened to all of the songs and I'm not saying there better than Angela Lansbury but there good at least to me
I watched this movie after seeing the original film it inspired, Auntie Mame. Auntie Mame was just so all around delightful and lighter as a comedy and there was richer characterization that Mame felt heavy while having less story. And I speak as a musical theatre fan. I recommend you watch Auntie Mame as a comparison.
When "Mame" went on general release in the UK this number (the best in the movie) was cut completely, as was "Gooch's Song". The bizarre thing was that they had to leave the reprise of "Bosom Buddies" in because it introduced the radically overhauled and transformed Miss Gooch and was therefore central to the plot. Of course, the reprise made no sense without the original song.
Lucille is a wondeerful actress but they really should have casted angela lansburry and if they then changed a few flaws from the script then the movie would have been perfect
Lucy has a better voice than Angela Lansbury, who has no color. It's just a shame Lucy couldn't have done this with Vivian Vance. Making the movie gave Bea so many more facets to explore with her performance. It was completely wrong of her to trash it publicly.
Bosom Buddies (1966) (wm) Jerry Herman. (I) Musical: Mame by Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur. 1974 film version by Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur. Vera: If I kept my hair natural like yours, I’d be bald. (singing) But darling, Vera and Mame: We’ll always be dear companions, Vera: My crony, Mame: My mate; Vera and Mame: We’ll always be harmonizing, Vera: Orphan Annie and Sandy, Vera and Mame: Like Amos and Andy. If only Lansbury had done the film... 😢

You know it's bad when Bea Arthur has the higher voice
They both sound like drag queens on helium.
still prefer the Roselind Russell version
So, if they are Alice Toklas and Gertrude Stein , are they telling us that they were lovers?
No, people back then thought about personality and wit, without worrying about what might go on in somebody's bedroom
Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren should do a new version of this...
T.E. Burgos I was thinking Meryl and Cher, since they are real life close friends
Lucille Ball got a lot of criticism for her performance in this movie but I always thought to be realistic about it considering that both women drink and smoke you have to think about it and say that she would sound the way she did meaning Lucille Ball

@@allmc2008 No, Mame was meant to be the very real bohemian sister of Patrick's father. Lucy was old enough to be his grandmother and then some.
I don't understand why people hate this movie I listened to all of the songs and I'm not saying there better than Angela Lansbury but there good at least to me
I've seen it. It's an ok movie but not the best

bea is really stealing this; in fact shes probably the best thing in this whole film which has been (in my opinion rightly)slated.

THIS SONG IS SO ME AND MY BEST FRIEND. WE GOSSIP, AND INSULT BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT WE ARE THERE FOR EACH OTHER.LIKE SISTERS.
This is one of the funniest moments in a movie I have ever seen.
Yup me and my Bosom buddy always and I mean... always tell each other the truth. 😅
And I always thought Bea Arthur was really a man!
+Mark BestBuddy So did a lot of other people! haha!
She was exceptionally tall. Notice Lucy is in heels, Bea is in “mock heels”- she’s in fancy flats
Bosom Buddies A.K.A. "Frenemies". ^_^
