MINI Cooper r53 Whine coming from supercharger/serpentine pulleys area.
A new whine has developed from my 2003 MINI Cooper S with 102k miles on it. I have been told by one mechanic that simply looked at the car that the noise is coming from my crank pulley. I got a second opinion from another, more professional garage who pulled the belt off of the car and diagnosed it saying that the noise is coming from the bearings within the supercharger. The car is not overhearing, therefore the water pump is still working which is attached to the supercharger.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the stock exhaust versus the non-resonated Milltek exhaust on a 2003 MINI Cooper S "r53." My car was completely stock before this installation. This is simply the cat-back system that Milltek offers for MINIs. There is a slight drone on the highways, but not too much for a little volume on the radio to drown out. I have searched and have not been able to fin...

Im my case was the water pump with the same noise .changed and problem solve
I replaced my idle pully and tensioner but it still has that sound .
Hei, did you manage to fix it?
I have the same problem, has anyone duplicated the fix by replacing the idler pulley?

+Oscar Gutierrez Hi Oscar! Mine was simply a idler pulley. I bought a pulley tool and installed it myself for a decent cost. Best of luck!

My 2005 Cooper S makes the exact same noise. Had a mechanic tell me that it maybe the supercharger. Glad I found this video. Hopefully this is the exact problem I have. If so, thanks for saving me some big money.

I'm thinking about this exhaust for my '06 Cooper S for autocrossing, but they require it be less than 103 decibels at 50ft. Do you know if this system is quiet enough for that purpose?
Did this whine sound the same as you drove it as well? I can hear this same whine from 1-4 gears.
How do you like it? Did it add HP or MPG? Do you think it's too loud?

I am sorry to have taken so long to reply! To my surprise, this issue turned out to be simply the idler pulley. What a relief that was! After seeing 3 different mechanics and having them all blame the wine on the supercharger, I went to AutoZone and bought a mechanic's stephescope and listened to find the wine in the idler pulley. I hope yours it just as simple!
Cody Schoenly I just had to change my idler pulley because the bearings on it went bad. I didn't catch it in time though. The bearings ended up coming out of the pulley all together and that, in turn, shredded my belt. I guess that's what happens when you get stuck in 8 inches of snow and try to get out yourself... haha.

This is probably the water pump PTO gears although it could be a bad bearing in the tensioner pulley or alternator. Crank pulley won't make this sound - it doesn't have any bearings! Even if the PTO gears are going bad, your water pump will still function at full performance until the gears start skipping. The water pump gears will almost always go bad before bearings on the Eaton M45. This failure happens when there is a rear oil chamber gasket or main seal failure and the supercharger oil leaks out or gets sucked into the intake. There is only 1-2oz of oil to begin with, so any oil loss is significant.
Sounds like Timing chain tensioner, Or Supercharger snout bearing.
