Sezen Ümitli - "The Tree That Was Once There" for Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2025
“The Tree That Was Once There”
Sezen Ümitli, 2024
Hand-raised copper, tin, brass, silver solder, layers of burned 180-year-old Turkish pine trunk in 2021 wildfire, shellac coating
" Can you paint
the picture of happiness
the object of sorrow
Is it possible to
Empathize a tree and
Were there any trees or
Was there anybody at all? "
“The Tree That Was Once There” centers the philosophical thought experiment which questions whether something exists without being perceived by consciousness. "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
The piece derives from the idea that future of craftsmanship is an artistic expression, a story-telling of lost narratives and values, using tradition in materials and techniques while demonstrating deeper concepts. It does not offer something merely to “look at”, but something to “think about”.
To think that ‘that one tree, was once there’.
The copper-colored wooden pieces are layers chipped off of burned 180-year-old Turkish pine trunk in 2021 Milas- Bodrum wildfire which scorched 150.000 hectare of forest. These fragile, partly reduced to ash pieces are attached onto the piece with brass claw prong setting with silver solder as in jewelry making.
The copper vase was hand raised, hammered and annealed. Tinned copper, traditionally used in Turkish pots are reinterpreted in form and tin is applied in certain geometry on the vase with heat.
The piece was polished with ash and finished with shellac coating.

In those days, even Sinatra said that Vic Damone had the best "pipes" in the business. I'm inclined to agree.
The best.
I love this movie and particularly this song. Want to find the full movie. Does anyone know where we can stream it?
What a shame that with so much talent, the film is far too long. Of course Messers Maclaine, Jourdan, and Chevalier are superb, and it shows what fine dancers Miss M amd Miss Prowse were. If only it had perhaps an hour shorter it might have been a classic musical.
Everything about Ann Blythe is EXQUISITE ! XXX
Eser ayrı etkileyici, ses ve vidyo ayrı… tüylerim diken diken oldu. Düşüncene, eline, emeğine sağlık, ruhuma dokundu gerçekten 👏.

❤
She forgot her money.
Thank you for using the wide screen format. Enjoyed the clip
This was during a golden time in America's entertainment history. These movies are national treasures because we have lost so much over time. I don't think we have it in us to duplicate this majesty any longer.
Tebrik ederim 👏🏻 sanatçının sürecine izleyiciyide dahil etmeniz çok etkileyici
So love this, Ann Blyth so handsome Howsrd Keele, and he had a wonderful voice. They say what goes round, comes round, perhaps all this rapper, foul language will go, and music i loved, i appreciated, will return. I'll be gone, but, perhaps, maybe,I'll be looking down and loving all over again xx
Almost every night without fail I listen and watch this video. My spirits are lifted and my heart filled with happiness. I feel like I am there in person watching every moment take place. It is so romantic and loving my soul screams out for more. This has to be truly paradise. Please, take care and stay safe. Love you all🙏🌹🕊❤️👍🌞🌈🇺🇸
The onagadori bird. A long-tailed chicken. An endangered species
Stranger in Paradise - a very popular song not written by the people credited with the musical. Stranger in Paradise is a melody written by Alexander Borodin, a 19th century Russian composer, for his opera Prince Igor
As is much of the score, not just this song
@@jerryman191 Yes, that's my recollection. Lovely melodies.
I heard anothe piece on Classic FM this evening. The lyric said 'And this is my beloved...'
I grew up with a love of musicals and saw this when I was a little girl ( mum and dad used to take me to afternoon matinees on Saturdays). It was just magical, the songs, dancing, characters, scenery. I thought Ann Blyth was the most beautiful woman ever and Vic Damone , well, I was definitely going to marry him when I grew up!! It’s just a lovely, joyous movie and I still love it many, many years later. 😊
Yes. This show still brings passion.
This was just a lovely fun movie. Beautiful people with wonderful voices. 😊
I love this movie and song
Marvelous film beautiful songs fantastic singers
Is that actually Ann Blyth singing or somebody else? Thanks.
I think that is her singing - judging from the Student Prince and 7 Brides
@@DavidoffGustav She is singing. But "Seven Brides" was another small sized soprano, Jane Powell (ua-cam.com/video/lwjI33C7Y6w/v-deo.html) And here is Ann Blyth singing in another context: ua-cam.com/video/LEqgzJcsP2U/v-deo.html
Truly her, a lovely voice, the great Carson film featured her so lovely version she sang to Caruso, Mario Lanza , beautiful song When you are in love, it's the loveliest night of the year. I never tire of watching and hearing this clip from the film. I believe she is in her late 90's, and still living a good life. ❤
@patriciaclancy397 If there's music in the Afterlife, I'd imagine this is what it sounds like
This video is truly paradise. The music, scenery, and Vic Damone with Ann Blyth and their beautiful voices is paradise at its best. I could dream forever in the fantasy of this garden. My soul is in true bliss and in love forever here. Take care and stay safe. Love always 😇🌈❤️🙏🌞🇺🇸👍🌹🕊
Hi. Does anyone know where I could watch this full movie?
You can rent or buy it on you tube. 😊
This is actually the number that FOLLOWS “Not Since Nineveh.” Maybe fix the title?
Beautiful music
Vic Damone was great
Turkish Delight? Rahadlakoum?
My Dad named me after Ann Blyth...thanks, Pop! 🍀
Genies and fantasy, Kings on the throne, three wishes in the castle.
The quality of this clip is amazing! Where can we see the full movie?
@@user-yw7kb5ru5s No apology necessary. I just appreciated your upload! It's such a visually stunning scene. I just wish I could find a digital version of the full-length movie.
@@user-yw7kb5ru5s Ha ha! I totally agree with your comment about the main actor's horse-riding skills!
Dolores Gray was terrific in this movie.
Ann Blyth was under rated. She was a beauty and very talented. This was a great show. Thank you.
Her as well as the entire picture, a masterpiece of Tony Duquette was pretty much underrated
It's a shame they cut the intro to the song; it makes all the difference.
Whenthis movie first came out I went around signing this song.
Vic Damone had a beautiful voice!
Frank Sinatra described him having the "best pipes in the business."
Time to go read some Edward Said.
Vic Damone is the Prince…..Howard Keel was the lead in this version. Drake did the Broadway show and a dreadful b&w version of Kismet….even worse than this scrawny budgetless piece of trash. The studio had no money and did it on the cheap. Vic Damon is so awful….with laughable costumes and turbans! Miscast! Wrong voice! I may be wrong, but I think Vincent Minnelli directed this….he must have stayed drunk just to get through it. In the “paradise garden”, there is a long-tailed chicken….instead of a peacock!
Direct lift from Borodin. 'Re-usable software'!
Another example of show business's deep and abiding respect for music that's out of copyright ;-)
@@barbaradace7952 This operetta resulted in a revival of interest in Borodin's music.
What do you mean about software?
The writers of the show were very clear in attributing everything to Borodin. The show was a tribute to him, not a lift from him. Marvellous Russian composer from the 1860s, actually a doctor or chemist who composed in his spare time. Wrote 3 symphonies, an opera, some chamber music, etc.A genius ! 4:18
Yes the music was so old no copyright but lots of respect for Borodin. @@barbaradace7952
Should the lead have been Alfred Drake?
