Stock Plastic Resonators vs. Mark VI Style Brass Resonators
Переглядів 548Рік тому
Here is a really quick comparison of stock plastic resonators versus Mark VI style brass resonators. I was just noodling around on my tenor, nothing special. I thought it would be interesting to video myself before and after the resonator change. I'm very happy with the results! Let me know what you think!

Directly out of the box! No set up! Me playing my Squier Contemporary Jazz Bass V HH. This is the Sweetwater Edition with the block inlays, matte finish and black pickguard. I am a professional Saxophone player so don’t bash my bass playing! 😁 This is just to give you an idea of the tones it can produce. Awesome Jazz Bass for the money! What do you think is the difference between those?
The plastic sounds good, but the brass resonators have more projection. Slightly more clarity and brings out more of the horns character.
I love your car. I also have a mr2 spyder. I'm wondering where did you buy your body kit?
Turismo UK
@@clifnotes9091 Thanks for the info
Onde encontro um desses ?
@@cellynovilela6282 Infelizmente eles não fazem mais esse baixo específico com incrustações de bloco. Foi uma edição limitada da Sweetwater. Você pode encontrar um usado no eBay ou Reverb.
Love this good job!!!
Thanks!
Nice deep bottom on this Squier. Thinking about putting flatwounds on it if I buy it.
First Good looking spyder
Thanks! It belongs to a new owner now. It looks better than ever now.
Bro, this car is so beautiful. I love it 😎👍
Thanks!
Great sounding bass! How is the qc on this bass like fretwork or any other issues?
The bass was built like a tank! One of the best basses I’ve ever owned! Everything was even and solid. This was an earlier KSD 6 string so the hardware and quality was excellent. When you upgrade the pickups and preamp in those basses they rival the tone in the more expensive ones.
@clifnotes9091 thanks for the reply! Good to know about the upgrades. 🤘
Its a beautiful car looks exotic .. What 5 lug conversion did u switch to and what are your wheel set up ? I'm looking forward to purchase a similar wide body kit for my mr2
Thanks! I used 4 to 5 lug wheel spacer/adapters.
@@clifnotes9091 the 5x100 adapter?
@@juanmireles9850I can’t remember the specs, but the total spacer/adaptor bolt pattern depends on what type of rims you have. They were custom made to my specs so that the rims and tires were flush with the kit.
@clifnotes9091 oh okay thaks I just or a lp super warrento from luxurycarpart from Taiwan and I was just wondering but I'll wait untill I get the kit then I'll find what specs I need to run . I kwap my mr2 ..thank you for the information
@@juanmireles9850No problem! Good luck on your project!👍🏽
Did you sell?
Yes.
How much did it go for ?
@@clifnotes9091 will you build another ?
con un 2gr swap quedaria muy bien
Sí, ¡un 2GR-FE estaría muy bien! Lamentablemente me quedé sin fondos para terminar.
You play the bass so very well
Thank you for the kind words! Hopefully one day I will play the bass more than I play the saxophone!😂
Helo
where did you buy the modification parts?
What specific modification? Most of the body came from Turismo UK.
Hmm…hard to get a true sense of the sound…for the plastic resos you had the horn farther away from the mic and a little off to the side and it sounded a little stuffier…with the metal resos you were much closer with the horn more directly at the mic making it sound brighter, so hard to really tell…also, is that the same horn? I noticed the low Bb keys look different…
@petegalindez9961 It’s the same exact tenor, neck, mouthpiece reed, everything. I recorded with my iPad Pro. You have great eyes. Looks like I did take a slight step back on the 1st clip. But the audio is true to what you would hear live. I prefer my tone with the metal resos. It’s more livelier.
The other variable is the built in iPad compressor. That is to say when you play loud the iPad will automatically adjust the video volume. This could be the reason why the metal reso clip sounds like there is less bass or mid low in the sound. Also the metal sounds like distortion on loud attacks. But not sure if thats the iPad mic clipping or the true sound. Question was your sax in need of an overhaul at the time you did the swap? Or was it already in great condition and you simply swapped out the resos? And did you keep the same pads? Pads also can tend to have different tones. Thanks for doing this, I'm about to do a change pad so lots of options to decide on.
Looks amazing! Well done!
Thank You!
Is this bass all original ? Sounds just like the USA Smiths
Hi @dslapster64 The Japanese BSRB Ken Smiths were made in Japan but finished by Ken Smith himself. His signature and date of completion is on the inside of the compartment cover. It has the stock Ken Smith soapbars and preamp that is exactly same as the USA ones.
It’s all stock.
what break setup are you using for the rear? car looks great from a distance. Once the panel gaps are adressed, it will be amazing. Mad props, bro
Same as front. Ceika big brakes for the MR2 Spyder. Thanks!
This thing looks so cool. Also, hello, fellow saxophonist here. I play alto and tenor.
Thanks! Just sold it. Great to meet another fellow saxophonists! Blessing to you!
carrera gt look? beautiful
Thanks!
In which store did you get the entire body kit?
Turismo UK
Love the round knobs for the a/c. Where’d you find those?
I forgot where I got them from. You have very good eyes! I forgot that I upgraded those too!😄But they belong to another vehicle that fits perfectly on this car. Once I look through all I’ve purchased and find out, I’ll reply here.
I think they are from a Toyota truck. Not sure of the model.
Tacoma possibly?
@@matthewbrickman8287I think so. Try Amazon.
What. A. Car. Looks amazing!
Thank You!!!
is this on bags or an air cup kit?
Air bags
Wheel setup and suspension setup needs adjustment in the front. Other then that it doesnt look bad. Panel fitment could be a little nicer. But as for someone who does autobody for a living. It turned out good
Thanks. It’s up for sale, for someone who can finish it properly. It’s currently on eBay.
spectacular
Thank you so much!

Where did you get the interior upgrades from?
Modified Turismo UK interior kit customized to fit Left hand drive dash.
I have an mr2 and hate how big the headlights and taillights are and what you did makes it perfect. What body kit did you use if you don’t mind me asking?
Turismo UK makes the kit.
Sorry but that looks shit. Wheels are awful and the car looks like it's been squashed. There are good and bad kit cars and this I'm afraid is bad
what is the suspension set up? I'm doing I different kit and having trouble finding the right offset for rim etc. what bags and air?
It has Airtekk air suspension.

best one I heard so far ...what kind of cab was u coming thru
Thanks Bro! I was running it through a Peavey 210TX combo. All knobs were set flat at 12.
@cliftonbrady9091 nice nice I saw a 4 string that same model used on guitar center they are more $ then the new limited model
@@iamLexxKelsey Yea, I haven’t seen how much they are worth now. But I do know that I will never sell this thing!😄
Typical brilliant Smith sound
It does dslapster64. It has the same exact preamp as higher end models and is signed and dated by Ken Smith on the inside. People sleep on the Ken Smith BSRB 6 string!
made in?
Indonesia
where did you buy that metal resos?
Hi Garry! I bought them from “Frank Woodwind and Brass Repair.” They are located in Audubon, NJ.
Great sound and even a better sound with the new resos!
Thank You!
Hi Clifton!! My name is Freddy. I lived in the Chattanooga area. You mentioned your from Memphis?? I really enjoyed your performance for the church. You were the soprano sax. Thank you for a beautiful performance. I play alto and for reasons I can't explain at that moment I was drawn seeking guiding from the Lord their I found your video. Thank You
Hi Fred! Thank you brother, for your support and kind words! Keep seeking the Lord because he is the source of everything we need! Take care and blessings to you!
I would stick a white pearl pick guard on that. It would look like a 5 string Geddy! 🤘🏻
I love the Geddy Lee Jazz basses! I went a different route and wrapped my pick guard in carbon fiber.😁
@@clifnotes9091 even better, originality!!! I would actually love to get a Geddy Jazz, but. Would have to redo it so it didn’t look like a Geddy. (Make it my own)
As a builder, My real first love (and what lead me to build) is modding. I’ve discovered that as long as the foundation (neck & body) is solid, you have a great instrument. We could have the standard discussion about high end PUs, ect. but as long as you have your foundation, literally everything else is easy to correct and perfect without expensive tools and a lot of skills. I just love great instruments like these without ridiculous price tags!
Well said my friend! I still have this bass. I’ve since then added Bartolini soap bars, a Glockenklang 3 band pre, and hipshot bridge. I love the look and sound.
@@clifnotes9091 I’ve got a boutique 6 string bass that’s got Bartolini’s and I’m actually a fan of them. Getting close to 50 years with the bass, and like you apparently, I love changing things to suit me and my wants and needs. I don’t know how it’s gonna work or sound, but I’m actually in the process of scalloping a long scale 4 string neck, just to see. I just might have the only completely scalloped neck, as I’ve never heard of one. That’s some real donkey work though.
How much you paid for this bass brother? They no longer have it on the website, but I’m close to buy a used one, I want to make sure they are not ripping me off
When they first came out, they were $450. How much are they selling it for? I hate that they are no longer making them.
@@clifnotes9091 thanks for replying, they are selling it to me for $600
@@hawkr1575 If you haven’t bought one yet, you might want to try eBay.

dang I was not expecting that slap tone
I absolutely DESPISE those nasaly-sounding ceramic pickups on these basses. They have no character at all.
I respect your comment and honesty. It’s been almost 2 years of owning this bass. Since then, I’ve replaced the pickups ,preamp and bridge. But, I still think it’s a great bass for the price.
@@clifnotes9091 The pre-amp and bridge were probably fine,...it's just the pickups. So what pickups and preamp did you replace the stock setup with?
@@saidboogeron-the-air9525 I replaced the pickups with Bartolini soapbars and the preamp with a Glockenklang 3band.
@@clifnotes9091 Have you made a recent video of the bass with the new upgrades?
@@saidboogeron-the-air9525 No I haven’t. I need to post more vids.
Ask permission What brand of bass string are you using?
On this particular clip, I have no earthly clue! They were the strings that came with the bass. I assume that they were Fender strings. I since then have used “Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalts” and “D’Addario ProSteels” and I love those more.
Do you like it?
Yes it’s my main axe right now. I did have to change out the pre.
That’s is really great bro blessings
Thanks Bro Jermaine! Trying to maintain my sax skills. How’s that Squire Contemporary holding up? I should be posting a vid soon with mods I made to mine.

Thanks for sharing Clifton! Your demo helped me make up my mind and I'm buying it! You play well! I'm primarily a guitarist, then a keyboardist. For some reason I want to play bass now! Enjoy!
No problem L Wade! It was such a great bargain and had such a great tone, I had to get my Son to record me playing it. The quality control is excellent, especially if you get it from Sweetwater. After inspection, they took a professional picture of my bass before shipping it off to me. I thought that was cool. Good choice! It’s one of the best bargain basses you can buy. After over a year, I still love it!
