West Coast Mountain Biker
South Africa
I am a semi retired skateboarder newly dubbed mountain biker. My current goal is to provide content containing local mountain biking rides and areas to ride in my community. There are many mountain bikers in my area, and I feel that not many of them know where they can ride or there are many spots that they don't know of. As I develop my style of content I will also grow from this into more videos like local rider features, local segments and even some other stuff like maintenance. I will also try to get as much of the events I participate in into videos.
The Trans Baviaans 2024 Repeat
One of the toughest challenges I have come to face on my bike. This one was an experience. A true test of what the human body can endure. And the mind games that was played inside my head is something you can't begin to explain.
But, I did it. I survived and now I can tell the tail. I'm really happy I got to conquer this pure bucket list item. To everyone else that did this years race and got to finish, I salute you. Thank you everyone for the support.

Mountain Biking in Strandfontein
On a recent family getaway we went to Strandfontein for a long weekend. The entire village is built around this view of the ocean. And its pretty spectacular. But I was there for mountain biking and that is exactly what I did. As my wife's cousin as my guide we went all along the coastline and saw some amazing views and had a lot of fun on the single tracks. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for watchin...

Thanks for a video just wondering do we really need to put sealant in there for tubeless tires?
Which method are you referring to? Or are you talking about the Air Guitar bit? Depending on how regularly you ride and weather conditions as well as ambient temperatures. There are many things to consider, but topping up the sealant is necessary every once and a while. Once a year I remove the tire from the rim and redo everything.
Ah man.
Lekker man!
Excellent! Watse hardtail het jy toe gekry?
@@WestCoastMountainBiker Silver Back - Stride Delight.
Ja man.
@ 2:14 - I always replace the rotor last having given it a good clean - plus least likely to damage or contaminate it.
I took good care not to contaminate the rotor. But you make a valid point.
Good old days bois
🤘🏻
if only rouvy had support for 4k resolutions like fulgaz does. that's the only complaint I have against rouvy. overall both are good, I have the annual subscriptions to both and use them interchangeably
Its a pity they don't support 4k. Something they should be looking into.
Much too much oil especially for the dry dusty conditions in this video
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
Would have been better off with a boat by the looks of it 😂 Great video!
Lekker trail, awesome content. Nice to see fellow South Africans doing MTB content. New subscriber here. I think your wife's cousin can offer MTB trail tours that side.
Hey thanks for the kind words. I think he can make a living doing tours there.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker 100% those awesome video really shows off the trail. My wife & I did fantastic MTB trail in St Francis Bay. A little on the beach, a little road and a little nature reserve. Worked out to be a short 21km. Saw your Trans Bavians video, I think it was the best I’ve seen so far but sjoe, I know everyone says it’s hard but you can actually see it.
@@thedailywitness thank you for that. I appreciate it. Personally I think it is one of my best videos. But believe me... watching the video only gives you an idea. But wow. What a challenge. A little unknown info. I couldn't get all the footage that I would have wanted because I usually have my gopro mounted on my helmet. So iets easy to just switch on and off where I want to. But they saw me at the start line and asked me to remove it. I don't know why, only that it was mentioned in the pre race briefing and that you were allowed to mount it to your bike. But I did not know this leaving my house driving hundreds of kilometers away. So what I did was keep it in my pocket and take it out every now and again. Hope they're not mad at me. They did say if they catch me ignoring their request they would disqualify me.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker that’s such a strange request from their part and having it on your helmet just makes sense. Especially when you looked around and you got to see some nice views of the mountains. Hope they don’t disqualify you. My wife & I are very new to MTB so we’re only viewing the different races and trails etc. We have a way to go, I think our first race will be next year where we will do the Herald. I think they offer a 30km, 60km and 80km. I want to watch another video of yours, the 2022 Karoo to Coast.
Its good that you and your wife get to do it together. We have another bike for my wife but with small kids around we rarely get the chance to do it together. Just beware of mtb races. People normally underestimate them. A short distance can be very with technical terrain, fast descents and single tracks. All challenging. If you're not comfortable with that sort of thing. Yeah the Karoo to Coast one is a little heart ache for me. But I won't spoil it.
Great vid! Lots of water!!
Understatement of note. Shoe. I did not expect all the walking in water. 🤣 But I think the cold water helps the legs recover a bit as well.
Rouvy free trial is now only 7 days...
That sucks. I guess too many people just shop around by doing the free trials.
Lekker man! Wel gedaan!
Ja man. Baie dankie. Ek waardeer dit.
Great video a nice summary of the spirit of the event - it looks a different vibe in the later groups. I rode in 2024 in group 1A, my second and loved it. Hope to be back in 2025 will be training over the UK winter for it!
I would like to know what that would be like, training and riding in the UK. I really enjoy this race. Although I take it on like a fun ride. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the support.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker Hi My Cape Town video is on this link below and has a Strava link also. Riding in the UK winter is OK as long as you are prepared for cold with good clothing and also lights due to our shorter days. And a winter bike with mudguards is essential for our muddy narrow lanes. But watch out for icy mornings- then people often do indoor trainer rides. Kudos for doing the ride on a MTB as well! ua-cam.com/video/G6_elIcBLLk/v-deo.htmlsi=AXzcJeF8prCgvV8A
@mangofilms1161 I will go and have a look. Your training sounds harsh. Our winters in the on the West Coast of the Western Cape are not so bad. But it is also our rainy season. And this year it rained constantly. You plan your training rides for the weekend but then it rains. We are supposed to be in Spring now. But we are still getting winter temperatures.
Would love to do the trans baviaans some day buy all that stand in my way is that i dont have a team mate
Thanks for posting... Really enjoyed the clip
Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Hi.Daisy Team 8 (258-1)here. Well done buddy. Totally agree, hardest race I ever done.
Hands down. The video doesn't tell the entire story. Like at checkpoint 3 for whatever reason I was close to tears and finding it hard to convince myself to continue. Really glad I did.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker That is so true.
@DirkvanRooyen-m6m glad you survived.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker lol thx mnr,Will attend next year again, much more time to pract and get fit.
@DirkvanRooyen-m6m are you chasing the 5 year trophy? I would do it again. Just need to save up. Will see closer to the event and like you said, get more fit before the race and do the necessary planning.
🔥🔥
🤗🤙🏻👍🏻💪🏼
See you next year
💪🏼👌🏻👍🏻 Yup. No doubt.
Great vid, but that trail really doesn't look like much fun
I agree. But for someone, like me, who doesn't really get a chance to ride any trails this one is kinda hectic. My brake pads were not ready for this one. And I needed them.
Thanks bro i was trying to find the problem with my bike not shifting turns out its the exact same problem
Its amazing the amount of possibilities it could be with shifting issues. I had a bent derailleur hanger once. Took me ages to figure out where my problem was.
Have you tried any of the Kapvoe photochromics? Curious how they compare in low light.
Unfortunately not. Had a bad experience with them too. But can't comment on their product. Sorry.
What's the name of that spanner? I need to buy one
Hey. Its either a freewheel removal tool or a cassette locknut tool. But it works together with the lever with the chain attached when you want to remove.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker Thx
great video thanks!!!!
Much appreciated.
How accurate is the power with ROUVY. My FTP on a wattbike is a lot more than on ROUVY.
I'm not sure about the accuracy of the power. I assume it won't be entirely accurate in comparison to the wattbike. But overall experience for training indoors is a great experience for me personally.
Awesome dude 😎
☺️
☺️
Super clean bro🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man. I appreciate it. 🙏🏻
Yeah that'll do it! Probably feels like a million bucks now
U need a key for middle near spinal to keep the cassette tight
So someone showed me this on his cassette and asked me if it should have that looseness between gears. My cassette does the same but maybe less. So it might be a quality thing. Or his hub might be a little more worn out...
Clean too
Thanks brother.
What bikes do you have?
Hey. I have a Silverback Sido 1 dual sus and a Silverback Stride Expert hardtail. The bikes in the video are mostly Scott. But not mine.
Afrikanerssss
Skuldig...😁
En hys terug!
😜 Hy probeer.
❤
🤙🏻
Holy crap when did I step into the club?
😅
Hi, great video. Assuming by ur accent im guessing ur South African. I just want to know where in SA u are because they are some nice trails in the Lourendsford Wine Estate in Somerset West, Western Cape. I ride there very often and its quite a blast! Also if u have the time and effort, i wanted to know how the Silverback Stride Expert feels for you and your opinion. Im coming from a Titan Racing Rogue and the Silverback is like 10000 times better lol. Hope to hear from you soon.
I am indeed South African. My accent when talking English is very noticeable seeing as I am Afrikaans. I can say that I have had no problems with the Stride Expert. I ride it more than my soft tail these days. The only bad thing that I can say is that my bike doesn't have through axles bolts. The wheels are secured by those skewers type screws. But no issues with them. The suspension feels great. Hope this helps.
👏
🤘🏻🙏🏻
Hola tenes video del purgado d esos frenos? Gracias
Nice skating 🤟
Thanks! 😁Think I got lucky with this one.
@@WestCoastMountainBiker luck!? brother, you had so much steez doing that, it looked like your 50th that day. that's muscle memory and skill.
Much love my dude. Appreciate it.
Don’t use CO2 it does not work with sealant , and this is a good pump. Pump to 160 psi open quickly to seat tire .
Thanks for the comment. 🤘🏻
This pump cannot measure my current wheel pressure?
Nope. The gauge is only to show the pressure in the cannister.
Well done, keep it up.
Thanks dude. Appreciate it.
Well done and thanks for a great viewing of this years cycle tour
Ah, thank you very much for your comment.
I love seeing church outreach programs in their communities! My church puts on teeball and soccer leagues for our small community. Everyone online bashes religion and loves to harp on and on about any bad things they can find but they totally ignore the positives.
Ah, thank you for your comment. This was totally one of those gatherings that aims to get the community involved. And very positive as well.
Lekker seeing more people record their ride. Well done
Ja. Thanks man.
Looking good man. I think I’ll do the same. 👊
Glad to hear it. And thanks.
keep up the grind dude😊😊😊
Thanks dude. I appreciate the support.
Great stuff
Thanks. I appreciate it 🙏🏻
Love mountain biking too😮
Glad to hear it. 🙏🏻
you cannot skip the fact that someone was on a unicycle.
I actually saw two of them. Don't know if there were more. But that is pretty spectacular.
Felt this one for sure !!
Hey. This year there was many things that made that last climb a tough one. The wind was one of them. I myself got to that point and just went to spin in out. Hope you enjoyed it none the less.
