great vid Peter....short, simple and straight to the point (and no american accents!)...
Thankyou for doing this video for me , easy to follow and I understand it 😁💞
Many years ago, when I was early in fly fishing, I did a one on one lesson with Peter at Albert Park in Melbourne, followed a couple of years later by a weekend at his lodge in Tassie all focussed on casting. It truly was the best investment I’ve ever made in regards to anything to do with fly fishing. His a master teacher.
That logo is shocking. I wouldn't care how well it cast.
Do you prefer them in the Blue/Yellow or Green/Brown polarchromic lens? I've been running copper polarchromic (non mirror) lenses for 7 years that now need replacing. All around general use, low-light and sunny days on the river, and many days inshore/flats fishing in all lighting conditions. Any ghost image/ light flare with the mirrored lenses? Every green mirror lens I've ever tried from Costa and Bajio I get a flare/ghost image next to any form of bright light (headlights and daytime running lights) or even bright reflective surfaces. It's really annoying and distracting! Thanks a ton in advance!
The fishing here ain't easy. If it looks easy in my videos you may not realise I walk an average of 10km per fish. Seems a bit nuts to spend all that money travelling to nz to walk 10km per fish only to spook it. Or getting a guide might be money well spent? 🏞️🔥💯 FYI Designated waters limits each non resident to 5days per region per season, thus limiting pressure overall. 💡Rather than ripping a streamer past every doggo fish & trying to get an eat - just leave it - ease the pressure off the river overall so there's something left for other anglers, maybe they're fishing behind you Tight lines & come for a yarn if you see me on the river 👌🏽🏞️🏕️
Superb podcast - cleverly curated questioning Andrew - thank you…
Terrific podcast and a lot of solid SINZ wisdom. Really encourage getting a guide initially to learn if your new to it and can spare the $. Was fortunate to fish there in the 90s and 00s during the ‘trout bum’ hey day. A lot more freedom and fewer people about. Good to hear the fishery is holding up, albeit with some more restrictions in Southland. Gonna have to get back there once the kids grow up!!😂
Exactly what is not needed for the highly pressured rivers is more DIY foreign fishermen. Our Fish and Game has responded by coming out with new regulations to try and reduce the pressure, to the detriment of the local fishermen. DIY is asking for a failed trip, don't be a cheapskate and gt a guide.
Your concerns about pressure on local rivers and the impact on local fly fishers are valid-it’s a delicate balance. But not all DIY anglers are cheapskates; many just value the adventure of DIY and still contribute to the economy through food, accommodation, and transport etc. With many South Island fisheries suffering from the effects of agriculture, one could argue that the value added by tourist anglers would help drive greater protection for these waters. That said, hiring a guide supports the local economy and ensures a great experience. The challenge is managing pressure sustainably, no matter who’s fishing.
Rubbish
Well said
The blame game, look closer to home
Thanks Andrew for asking very helpful questions. Merry Christmas all.
How’s the Hinchy comp video going? Cheers
I’m not buying it. Seeing no more cormorants than any other year yet everyone is jumping up and down this shit season is all about the cormorants. No science just a mythology that it’s the cormorants’ fault. Are you tracking cormorants? Is there data on cormorant numbers? Nope just you spreading this bullshit theory that holds no water.
What’s competition about a 007? I appreciate the tips though and recognise that you are putting yourself out there when you are giving advice. A note on whitebait: they aren’t all spawning. The majority of whitebait are juvenile galaxias and will move upstream to grow and eventually become adults. Sea trout will follow these schools from the estuaries up into fresh water or at least into the upper reaches of the estuary and you may be surprised by the size of the fish you may catch in January in a small creek or river].
Good one Finn !
As a local fly fisher here in NZ, please clean and dry your gear between regions and even rivers here, there is a number of invasive aquatic weed and recently Golden clams found in Taupo region that no one knows where they have come from, & if your coming from the South Island even more so, we must keep Didymo out of the north island! Appreciate it & enjoy!
Everyone knows the number one way to break a rod is closing your car door on it sheesh cmon guys
Great video. On top of that the shirt is great, and looks a perfect companion , who supplies that ?
He's a fashionable guy!
Nice Peter, hope you are doing well.
Greate movie, thanks. Tommy, DK
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello Peter, I'd like to offer a few different views: I yet have to see a very first loop presenting parallel legs throuout the unrolling. In all the many slomos I made of fly casting experts I saw none straight fly-legs as well as none parallel legs at any time during unrolling. Since I in fishing often want to present (drive forward) my fly in just the speed necessary (or a tiny extra), a crossed loop easily may result. That is a fine loop, while a loop closer to parralel legs automatically would ask for additional speed. I don't buy into the holy grail of parallel legs, especially since they don't exist anyway. You recommend to keep the forward and back loop on a straight line. I disagree with that. We cast along a horizontal figure eight since our loops/line drops during unrolling. Joan Wulff had this correct in her book over 40 years ago by the way. Wind knots are just knots (typically) in the leader. They are not generally caused by tailing loops, especially not those old school text book ones (with the crossed legs). You can cast without a single one of such dramatic/over pronounced tailing loops and still produce many knots in the leader. All distance experts throwing a fluff on distance usually end up with several knots in their leaders. Why? Because a fluff often causes the leader to pile up some and then the leader lands in coils and the fluff following down easily lands thru them. Add a split shot (causing better leader straightening) and the knots are mostly gone, while your loops remain the same. A 40 degree arc doesn't cause any tails per se. It most likely causes too small line speed. But you can still keep smooth acceleration. Its the too uneven force application causing the tip to dip and rise then adding a wave in the fly-leg. Of course I agree, that trying to create a high line speed within a 40 degree arc asks for a very high level of force application for which smoothness is extremely hard to be controlled. But hey, beginners in 99% never use too small but too wide arcs, while yet they show too uneven force application creating waves in the fly-legs. A bit of food to think about. I hope you don't take my spontaneous thoughts in any personal way. It's just what I experienced in studying fly casting for some time. Kind regards and some good tucks always, Bernd
Good Job 👍
Thanks Geoffrey!
Great to see your still in the Loop, Cheers Pete.
That's master peter. Bro aged so much. I almost didn't recognize him
Older and wiser
Excellent
Thanks!
Extraordinary explanations and demonstrations of casting fundamentals. Thank youl
Glad you got something out of it!
Super helpful and clear.
Hope it helps you on the water!
Very sweet Pete.
He's a guru...
Easy to understand with lots of great info. I hope many more see this video.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
I have been fly fishing for about 30 years. I was very aware of the wind knot. The way you showed and described how it happens after all these years made sense to me . The first person to do so. Congrats 👏 to you. I am a person that takes things in better and quicker with diagrams not all words. I can picture the cast and where it can happen and how to avoid it. Thanks once again.
So great to hear Malcolm!
Excellent explanation of the casting stroke and loop shape!
He has a way of explaining things few can...!
Agreed, this is by far the easiest video to understand as to how to correct issues with the loop in a cast
Get the best casting instructor and a talented cinematographer that fly fishes and you can make magic!
I reckon I could do this. Even with one of my POS $1,500 rods, I reckon I could. Good work Pete. 😂 😂 See you soon.
Once you have the knowledge, the rest is practice!
You're a legend Peter. Your coaching has helped my casting so much, and made flyfishing more enjoyable and successful. Thank you.
Great Mike. Glad you enjoyed it!
This is by far the best explanation of casting, line, and rod control on the internet.
It's certainly concise, but the movement of the caster is making is still difficult to understand. One moment he is using a side arm cast while the other moment he is more vertical. Very confusing
Thanks!
Try not to worry too much about that-it’s not directly relevant to the video or the quality of your casting. If you focus on the tips shared in the video, you’ll find that it doesn’t matter whether you’re casting sidearm, backhand, straight up and down, or on a different plane than what feels “normal.” With proper technique, the tip path will stay consistent, and that’s what really counts.
Great video guys! Awesome tips.
Thanks Jackie!
That was excellent!!! Thanks Peter!!!
Glad you enjoyed it Aaron!
Immediately googles flights to NZ 😂

Great video!
Ok, that blank is as ugly AF. For another 150$, you can buy a G. Loomis Asquith which is drop dead gorgeous. I own the Loomis.
Ok, I took my Helios D to the Salmon River in NY for Salmon and Steelhead. My rod is a 9 weight. You can't load a lot of lead that you need for Salmon. This rod is just not able to handle a lot of lead on the leader for nymphing. Take 2/3 of the lead off for steelhead, and the rod performs much better. This is not the right rod for nymphing for salmon running up river to spawn.
Spent few days at Swampy Plais River with Peter Morse this past week...no trout anywhere...cormorants perched at every corner.
WOW, thanks for the vid. I’ve never broken a rod or seen one broken that way yet. I don’t pull my line though my guides like that either….so that makes sense . Thanks again for the heads up. 400 rods a year, damn, that is crazy. People need to learn how to do the basics first I’m guessing., and practice them……….Yikes!
Not as nice to cast as an NZ wool indicator and more splashy on the water.
Can’t wait till the film. Thanks definitely on the bucket list 👍🤙
Great listening to Andrew & Peter! 😀
Earlier this week I came out to see Cormorants on my dam. I went out to shoo them away and I reckon 50 took off an joined another 50 overhead. Since then there have been birds here every day. I’ve seen Yellowbelly that they couldn’t swallow on the bank of my dam that they pulled out and picked to bits. I’ve watched a single bird at lakes entrance dive and catch a fish every minute for 10 minutes, dry it’s wings and then go get more. Many times I’ve seen clouds of these ravenous things in approximately 100 number and 3 flocks the same. Natural birds in unnatural numbers. Anyone know where I can buy a used Anti Aircraft gun...Grin~
Great stuff Andrew and Peter enjoyed the podcast....
You should mention that a lot of those rod breaks were where individuals used a loop to loop connection on fly line to leader and so on … a clean smooth knot will flow through the guides much better . If you don’t take the time to learn all the knots involved in fly fishing …. Sell your flyrod and take up bait fishing 😂😂😂😂🙏🏿
Max helped me out to pick my first pair of waders and boots, extremely happy with the LT, so comfortable
