12 Hours of Sebring - 1967
Coverage of the 1967 Sebring 12 Hours race compiled from various online sources. Replaced terrible music with engine sounds and slightly improved the ESPN footage.
Following a DNF due to engine failure at Daytona, Porsche 906-160 arrives at Sebring wearing green and white and the #39. Also present are the three other short-tail Einspritzrung cars; 906-157, 159, and of course, the tiger-striped 158 of Ed Hugus. Unfortunately, despite qualifying 19th, 906-160 DNF'ed due to accident damage. The car was then left with Joe Buzzetta for repair and two months later, it finished 1st in the under 2.0L class and 8th overall at Watkins Glen. Buzzetta campaigned the car for the remainder of the 1967 season with moderate success.

This was around 2005 at a test and tune at Payne Engineering. I wish I still had the paperwork, but I recall my MGB used up its front tires to do .98g. Henry Payne is seen here driving 908/02 chassis 017.

Following its victory at Daytona, Porsche 907-005 returned to Germany and was fitted with new vertical stabilizing fins on the rear bodywork in preparation for the high speeds of Le Mans. Wearing the number 33 for the April test session, Stommelen was 3rd-quickest overall in 005. Originally scheduled for June, the race was postponed until September and by that time the 907s had been replaced by...

    The “terrible music” you talk about, is that the 80s ESPN Speedworld music theme? at the start of a Glory Day’s episode? Or something else. The Speed World theme is wonderful, and always got me revved up to watch a motor racing broadcast! I miss it.

    Waaay back in the day, Henry Payne held SCCA autocrosses at the track he built around the grounds of Payne Engineering. He would frequently take either his 904 (with the 6 cyl engine), 906, 908 or 910 around his track. I recall the day he stuffed his 908 into a tree that was near the edge of the track. Somewhere I have a photo of my dad standing between his 904 and one of the others.

    Los años 60's fueron para México sin duda los mas brillantes en el deporte internacional... Rafael Osuna gano el unico grand slam para México fue el u.s open en 1963... Manuel "pulgarcito" Ramos es mexicano que contendio por titulo de peso completo en boxeo...fue contra Joe Frazier,pero perdio.Pedro Rodríguez gana las 24 hs de L'Mans todo en 1968, Raga un básquetbolista fue el primer extranjero que contrato la n.b.a. aunque no quizo ir por jugar lo j.o. de México..Memo Echavarría fue el primer y unico mexicano en obtener un record mundial en natación, creo fueron los 1,500 estilo libre .. México incluso organizo los j.olimpicos y quedo en 15vo lugar con 12 medallas y asi recuerdo otrros logros .. Juanito Martinez en atletismo Yola Ramírez en tenis ,Ruben Amaro gano el guante de oro en ligas mayores y después les pasó otros logros que hoy no los tenemos.

    I will never forget as a teenager passing Henry in the 904 while we are in a driving rain on the Expressway just about at the Train Station down from South Hills. His Mini Make with the tuned 1250 motor won many auto crosses, and his AC Buick was legendary. I had asked him when was he going to get a real Cobra- He responded as soon as he finds a Cobra with a better Power to Weight ratio.

    It might be worth noting that early '917s', other than the 907s steelframe, were flimsy aluminium (or magnesium) tubes with negligible downforce. Meaning a highly flammable Gfk covered leaf in high gusts. Just look at the Woolfe Racing wreck. Siffert, Elford, Stommelen and the german works drivers had to be fearless absolute magicians to race them things. Apart from that I think Mario Andretti looks every inch the epitome of a racedriver. Thanks for the great document.

    • @simeonorive145
      @simeonorive145 5 місяців тому

      Ive made a similar comment on another video of the 917 being not as robust as the 512 Ferraris in the 1970 season and that upset many a Porsche keyboard warrior. Even the Aluminum tubed 917s were not meant to last more than 1 or 2 long races. No hate on the 917s they were incredible cars at the cost of strength.

    • @sergioleone3583
      @sergioleone3583 4 місяці тому

      @@simeonorive145 I can't remember if it was Elford or Redman or someone else, but the early 917s had a pressure gauge on the chassis, it was filled with some inert gas to confirm no cracks. When the pressure went to zero, park it, because the frame's tubing had cracked.
