Technique Tips: What makes 'Left Hand Walking' an effective warm-up?
In this excerpt from Ian's weekly live Technique Tips class, he gives one reason the 'left hand walking' exercise from the daily warm-up routine featured in Scott Tennant's 'Pumping Nylon' makes for an effective warm-up.

Acclaimed by the press as a 'dazzlingly virtuosic' (The Herald) guitarist 'of outstanding skill and originality' (Classical Guitar) with 'an exceptional range of timbre...sublime' (BBC Music Magazine), Ian Watt first came to public attention as a 16-year-old finalist on the 2007 BBC Classical Star TV programme. In 2009, he was awarded 2nd prize at the highly prestigious Parkening International Guitar Competition in the USA, where Soundboard magazine described him as an '18 year-old phenom'. A respected teacher, he joined the guitar faculty of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland at just 21.
In this video, Ian opens one of a series of concerts he gave in Spain in the summer of 2014, organised by CaminoArtes. The audience is made up mainly of pilgrims who have stopped for the night on their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The concert - held in the exquisite Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Camino - preceded the evening Mass celebrating the feast of the Assumption.

Ian Watt, awesome content you deserve more views
Such a beautiful arrangement and playing. I arranged this for two guitars which allows you to play with range and harmony. Thank you for sharing. ua-cam.com/video/sNDcKv2w0lA/v-deo.htmlsi=Gl8SW0PjdQna1_JL
Wonderful melody, beautiful arrangement and perfect execution. Ian your playing enchants me.
Thank you so much!
Wow, congrat's Ian!
Thank you Andrea!
Wow, that’s really beautiful
Thank you so much!
Lovely
Thank you! 😊
Your rendition of Niel Gow's Lament is absolutely beautiful! The delicate touch and emotion you bring to each note truly capture the soul of the piece and resonate deeply in the heart. Thank you Ian for sharing such a stunning performance! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment!
This is beautiful. Is the music for sale in tab form too?
I'm afraid not. That is another project for me!
@iwattguitar I will keep an eye out for that. Been trying to find tab for it for a while.
🌺🌺🌺 مرصی❤
That's such a lovely arrangement Ian!
Thank you Jacopo! Much appreciated!
Beautiful arrangement ! 😍
Thank you so much!
The Deep?
Great 👍
Thank you!
Very simple it says 🤣🤣🤣 for you 🤣🤣🤣
Simple 'in concept'! Everything in guitar is hard 'in practice'! 😂
Everything ok?

Mate cut ur nails😬😬
I'm a guitarist...
He has to have them like that because he’s fingerpicking he can’t really use a pic because some of the songs are so fast
Excellent teaching and communication. Bravo
Thank you so much, Peter. A comment like this from you means a lot and is hugely encouraging!
Is this considered planting? I’ve been told the finger should come back and touch the string but it appears that you don’t do this. You just bring it back and allow it to float there.
Thanks for commenting. Planting is about placing the finger on the string before playing. Its nature is preparatory. This video is about what the finger does after playing. Touching the string at the end of the 'reset' would stop the string from continuing to vibrate, which is fine if you are playing short notes (staccato) but obviously a problem if you want long notes or legato articulation. Hope that helps!
@@iwattguitarNow I understand. Yes - this makes sense. Thank you for answering my question.
I saw a performance where you played it in Eb, as David Russell does. Have you changed your mind?
I'm not a fundamentalist on the issue, sometimes playing it in Eb and other times in D. I think that D is better for a guitar tutorial video, as virtually every guitar edition is notationally in D.
@@iwattguitar Personally, I prefer it in D but I enjoyed your live version posted to UA-cam a few years back. Your phrasing was great, not boring/robotic like some versions I’ve heard.
You are real artis not just beginner...why u didnt make tutorial this piece..Sevilla...it Will amazing..mentoring from virtuoso..btw i follow u bro
Thank you! Watch this space!
Awesome.
Thank you! 😊
Nice!
Is this the same Ian watt playing on DK guitars?
Yes! In fact, I have recently begun a new project with DK guitars, the 'Unwound' podcast, where we interview the world's most interesting luthiers! Here is out most recent! ua-cam.com/video/wl58H7hGx3Y/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Incredible video, thank you!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Looking at how you approach the string with the fourth finger of your left hand, I realize that I will have big work and difficulty in fixing this positioning problem. My fourth finger does not approach the string exactly with the tip, but I move it a little inclined, and paying the "meat of this finger together" - and working this way to scales too, more perceptible whem this finger need to reach notes as A#, B, C in the 5o string , these high notes for that string I mean, or E, F#, G in the 6th string, when practicing escales. . I had a guitar teacher many years ago, he corrected several positioning problems in my hands, but this one remained.
Beautiful
Dreamy 👌
😊👍
Thanks for the video, it´s very usefull for my habilities of today.
