Thanks for this. I am studying triads seriously these days and I'm always looking for the most musical way to approach them. Your lesson was very helpful
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Just wanted to let you know that the volume is very low on your video.
thank you for letting me know! I'll be sure to doublecheck going forward :)
Nice video, Amy.
thank you!
Amy, it is a real pleasure being a subscriber of your channel. I really enjoy hearing your views on music and I always learn something new from each and every lesson you share. I'm so glad you're here.
Aw thank you so much, Fred!
@@AmyMantis You're very welcome. Were you by any chance in CT over the Labor Day weekend?
I was not, but I've been told I have a familiar face so I wouldn't be surprised if you came across someone who bears a strong resemblance to me.
Well to use the old catchphrase "everyone has a double", your double was in Madison, CT on Labor Day. 😁✌
Right back at ya! Thank you !
Beautiful piano music, great book recommendation ... here's a Thank you for you: ua-cam.com/video/idUrOJ8-Lh4/v-deo.html

Thanks. Another good musical way to practice triads is the intro and outro to Hotel California. Bm F# A E G D Em F#. You can finger pick the melody for both parts. Play it in as many places on the neck as you can. It’s lots of fun.
Totally! That song is so good for so many things including this.
Pentatonic is Satanic. There's a whole documentary about it. Chuck Berry 🫐 is in it. 🩸
After 11 years, 213 views and 6 likes ... Let me be the first to say "Thank You!" for posting and sharing this video. I had forgotten about this exercise and will now add it back into my practice routine. I appreciate you posting this and can't believe nobody commented on it for 11 years.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you came across this ancient video and that it helped. I’m curious, did it pop up randomly in your feed or did you search for “guitar exercises” or something like that?
@@AmyMantis I was watching a few guitar lesson type videos before I plugged in to practice and yours just came up in the recommended videos so when I scrolled through them I clicked on a few of yours and subscribed to your channel.
Thank you Amy, this is a great tutorial. You mentioned a tab - are you still planning on doing one? New UK fan.
You’re welcome! And since you inquired, I will finally get around to that tab. They’re a bit involved but I’ll try to knock it out in the next couple of weeks. Glad you liked my video! Cheers, Amy
@@AmyMantis Thank you Amy, but please don’t put yourself to a lot of trouble on my account. I usually follow `TAB, but I am slowly getting through each lick by repeatedly watching your excellent video. Thank you again as you have inspired me to learn something meaningful instead of isolated licks. 😊
I’m delighted to hear that my video has inspired you! I still might give the tab a go because it’s a skill I want to get better at. I’m starting a master’s of music program next week that will have me transcribing a lot of music so this will help me as much as it helps you! (And hopefully others!)
Would you consider this a blues progression in this song you transcribed it from
Good question. It's blues-adjacent, but the progression (I think) is eight bars and it's?\: F Bb7 Bbm F Dm Dm G7 C7 So in Roman numerals, we're in the key of F, we get: I IV7 iv I vi vi V7/V V7 That V7/V can also be written as II7. I look at it as a secondary dominant, hence V7/V Hope this helps!
Excellent! Thanks!
You're most welcome!

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed my video. I keep saying “I’ll break out the 345 for the next one.” And then use my Strat 😂
cool
thanks!
Cool lesson.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
The solo, the phrases, sound like horn parts. How many guitarists were around at that time?
That’s a good question. I’ll look into it in detail more but you’re right that Charlie sounds like a horn player. Most lead instruments in the early days jazz were horns (trumpet and alto sax) because they could be heard very clearly above the band while the guitar - prior to amplification - didn’t have that same ability.
Thanks
Welcome!
Fantastic, really. And how great it is to get valuable lessons from a Berklee masters level guitarist. Thanks a lot.
You’re most welcome! And I don’t have my master’s of music degree yet - but I will in 2026 🤠
Thank you for calling out the notes! Helps map out the fretboard.
You’re most welcome! We guitarists don’t do ourselves any favors by only focusing on the fret numbers. You gotta know the notes!
@@AmyMantis OK. I'll help you: listen to Django Rheinhart, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, and that Vietnamese blind guitarist on UA-cam.
Thanks Amy! Nice coverage of the triads on the first three strings. Darn those diminished chords. 😆
Darn those diminished chords indeed! I made this video for a student of mine a few years ago. I don’t think she ever watched it. I’m glad you found it helpful!
Nicely presented, but the audio was turned way down when the video was made, so you have to bump up the volume quite a bit to play it and then other vids are way too loud so you have to turn it back down. A minor issue but it would help for further vids to match it closer to other vids on UA-cam.
Thank you - I’m working on the audio quality as I go along with these. Hopefully each time I dial it in a bit better.
Cool playing Amy ... 🎸☮️✨🔊 Could you consider doing some Robin Trower from his 1975 Winterland concert please ?
I’ll give it a go! I haven’t listened to Robin Trower so it’ll be an adventure 🤠
Really good Amy ,really good !!! not too far from Eric Clapton
Aw thank you so much!
I saw a lesson on this (I forget where?!) using the 5 caged shapes. For each one, play the chord using that shape, then play the root note then one of the other 6 notes (here's what the root sounds like after the chord, here's what the 1st sounds like after the chord, .... here is what the 7th sounds like after the chord). You learn the chords/triads in each shape, and overlay the scale.
That’s a great method too!
Lovely song, thank you for sharing
Thank you for listening!
That's beautiful Amy. A truly heartfelt and touching song. My deepest sympathy to you and your family for your loss.
Thank you Fred ❤️ it’s been a tough road. My dad was a wonderful man and I miss him every day.

Any way to break outside the box!
Excellent lessen. Thoughtful and practical. Good luck with your master's degree.
Thank you so much! I’m sure I’ll have lots to share once I get underway in my program :)
Beautiful tribute to your dad. So sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is a hard thing to experience and one that I've been able to put into perspective over time but still profoundly hurts sometimes. It's a beautiful thing that you wrote this song for him. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
Thank you so much ❤️ There are some days that I can’t sing through this song because of how hard the loss is. I appreciate you!
So what model of strat is that? Is that a mocha finish? Thanks.
It’s a Custom Shop Eric Clapton in EC Grey, a color that was in limited production in I think around 2010.
Cảm ơn bạn chia sẻ chúc bạn vui vẻ ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, Amy! This is so important to know and you presented it in a very easy-to-understand format.
Thanks for your support, Fred!
My favourite Cream song! Great breakdown, Amy! It’s George Harrison playing all the way to the bridge, then Eric comes in 👍
Thank you! It’s such a good song!
Good effort Amy,, typical of Eric this man can make complex riffs look so simple till you try them yourself, noticed just the other day when he played this live, he and his rythem guitarist changed roles, i.e. Eric played rythem and the rythem guitarist quietly played the lead in the background, then changing roles back when the lead guitar solo parts needed to come to the front, really clever to keep the song sounding strong throughout, and no! I don't think this is cheating, it's call being a world renowned professioal artist.
Thanks! Eric is a master of making complex things sound easy. And he’s also a master of making easy things sound complex.
It's giving nostaliga
You are so different. Unique. Interesting. Barbie Dolls are boring, plastic. ;)
Great video, Amy! Thanks for sharing your experience and advice. I can personally attest to the topic about using hearing protection. I suffer from severe hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears. It's the typical high-freqency range loss, which is attributable to not wearing proper hearing protection when I was younger. This makes it very tough for me to learn songs by ear on the guitar. As you said, hearing loss is irreversible. The only help available is hearing aids, which are not all that helpful in many situations. I hope all of your younger viewers heed your sage advice!
Thanks, Fred! I'm sorry to hear (couldn't resist) about your severe hearing loss. We all lose some hearing over time, but most of it is preventable. Regrettably this aspect probably wasn't talked about enough until recently. But even now I know people who refuse to wear earplugs at concerts and I'm just like 🙃🙃🙃 I cannot stress this point enough: WEAR EARPLUGS. A young student of mine and his family mentioned they were going to see Neil Young back in May and I encouraged them to walk down to their local CVS (literally down the street from their house) to get earplugs not just for my young student, but for themselves and their older son. They listened and couldn't thank me enough the following week!
Very nice!
Thanks! The Core is such a good song and wicked fun to play. Glad you enjoyed my lesson!
Oh dang! You’re the guy that’s doing all the Clapton covers! My boyfriend and I are huge fans. Keep up the great work!
@@AmyMantis Greetings from Poland, cheers!
Thanks for sharing this, Amy. I've always loved the song "Badge" by Cream. You presented a really nice workup of the intro and verse!
Thanks! It's a longtime favorite. I approached it from what the most important parts were rather than just what Eric was up to.
I´m glad to be able to follow a female guitarist. In the late 60es, when I started playing guitar, the first motivation was that the boys were playing on stage, and the girls were screaming and crying in admiration. Okay, I never experienced that, but the Beatles did. Anyway: I´m 68 now, and the music itself has been the motivation for a long time. I love to see female guitarists concurring the stage that has been reserved men for so many years. Another thing that brings joy to me is, that I had to skip my music as a professional career and spend most of my working life as a tour bus driver and later truck driver, with very little time to rehearse. Being retired I have taken up my guitar playing again, including theory, and it gives me such a great otium. And there are so many learning platforms open today, that I didn't have as a young kid. Keep up the good work, Amy. 😊
Thanks! I'm glad you have the time to play now. And there are a lot of women playing guitar these days which also makes me happy.
Great Video. You should look into soundproofing the room to improve the quality of the video, every bit helps.
Thanks! Yeah, that's not my room to soundproof though so I started using a microphone to alleviate the problem.
You can see the Eb triad in C major as borrowing it from the C minor. I´m so hooked on this: C Eb G C. It brings an element of surprise into your playing.
Yes! Great observation. There is a never ending source of surprise in even the smallest bits of music.
do you memorize the shapes for the intervals and the scales? I am think9ng that of you do it easy to choose any key. Or do you think of the actual note names?
Do you memorize the shapes for the intervals and the scales? I am thinking that if you do, then it is easy to move to another key. Or, do you think of the actual note names?
Both. I start with the shape and make sure I know the notes. Ultimately I think the notes are more important than the shapes. But the shapes help a lot and are a great shortcut at first.
I agree this is best method, as I play in a pub, and we play covers, so we just need to know the key of the song and then once we know which chords are in the key it helps to then just play triads. Much better than just memorizing all shapes...
Totally. The shapes are helpful but just knowing shapes doesn't mean you know how to use them.
