25 Books I really want to read in 2025 // Joan Didion, Ernest Hemingway, Toni Morrison
Переглядів 110День тому
Hey all! I wanted to jump on board and pick 25 books to prioritize reading this year, so here we are! This doesn't cover nearly everything I want to read this year, but it's a start. Also, now that I've edited everything I realize I forgot one book =/ I'm also going to be reading Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb. I've heard she has really great characters in her stories, and I've been wantin...

Happy 2025 everyone! A lot of us like making little reading goals, and I'm no exception. I want to be more intentional this year, and not be stressed out by 700 page books. I forgot to mention in the video I also want to start doing research on different ways to structure a book club. It's a new dream of mine to have one. I'm excited for this reading year, and January has already given me some ...

Ohhh boy. This is a big one. What a book. Today I'm diving into my thoughts on Hanya Yanagihara's 'A Little Life'. Safe to say this book is very divisive, but that's the main reason I read it. Let's get into it! BE SURE to check the trigger warnings on this one: triggerwarningdatabase.com Leave your thoughts below!!
Let's talk about Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner // Book of the Month November 2024
Переглядів 98Місяць тому
November's book of the month, Crying in H Mart, is a tricky one to discuss. We're doin' it anyways! In short, the book is about Michelle Zauner losing her mother to cancer, and how food was and is a strong connection to her mom. This book is raw and unfiltered, and it comforted me in such a healing way. I'm so grateful for this book, and recommend it to everyone. Trigger warning check: triggerw...

    I finally read Sword of Kaigen and it was totally nothing I was expecting and I loved it! Very much Avatar the Last Airbender vibes 😊 I literally just talked about needing to read Inferno as well 😂 I hope you love Babel- it does take a while to get into though. Our wives under the sea wasn't as slow as I expected it to be- maybe because the chapters we so short. Great list!!

      I will actually cry if I'm the first person ever to not like Sword of Kaigen lol I honestly am feeling optimistic about Babel but we'll see!!

    I hope you enjoy I Who Have Never Known Men. I just don't think anything...happened? I was bored. Also for the Sun also rises, I laughed out loud once, but again, very boring 😂 Enjoy!

      Oh, I'm easily annoyed by books being too slow or boring soooo now I'm even more excited to check it out!! I have terrible luck with classics, so my hopes aren't that high for Hemingway, but I just gotta know 🤓

    So many crossovers that I want to read. Gentleman in Moscow, Dark Matter, Beloved, Babel, 100 Years, Empire of Pain... just to name a few. So please let me know when you start hitting some of those up ! I just read Joan Didion's memoir "A year of magical thinking" and for the most part couldn't get past this heir of superiority she had... BUTT I still am very interested in reading some of her ficiton. Super looking forward to hearing your thoughts about Hemingway 😮😮

      Well, I just found out 100 Years is also a show now soooooo that's exciting for us! I'll definitely keep you updated on the stuff we both wanna read. I'm super intrigued now that you said that about Joan Didion. Now I want to read that title instead, oh man. So many books to read!

    This inspires me to want to actually make reading goals for myself. I mean, they exist in my mind, but very vaguely. I definitely want to read LOTR! And I'm definitely reading Red Rising. Besides that, I plan on tackling my physical tbr like whoa and stop obsessing over new, library reads. Maybe just stick with audiobooks for all those new releases, etc. Which is definitely going to require patience. Oh boy. Ganna have to rethink all these goals. So much to think about!

    • @claireandherbooks
      @claireandherbooks 9 днів тому

      I will actually laugh so hard if you don't like Red Rising haha but I'm so happy you're trying it! I'm trying to start doing the 'notify me' feature on Libby so I can be one of the first ones to listen to new audiobooks, but I haven't actually had it work yet. So I hear you on the patience thing. We should be accountability buddies for reading our physical TBR. I've got lik 16 or so to get through 😬

    Hi hi! Have you read Fifth Season yet? One of my fav adult SFF series- its very different and complicated but worth it 😊 Other recommendations (that you didn't ask for) are She Who Became the Sun (Historical Fantasy), There There (Lit Fic), Every Heart a Doorway (Fantasy novella series), Marina (Gothic Fiction- the audiobook is great). I think you'd like all them (hopefully 🤞). I found if I read longer books via ebook or audiobook I tend to get through them faster 🤷🏻‍♀. I try to keep notes on everything I read in my digital journal but never thought about mapping them together- interesting concept! Can't wait to hear about everything you read this year!

      I Have Fifth Season on my wishlist, cause people looove that book! I can do complicated as long as it eventually makes sense. She Who Became the Sun is also on my wishlist! I've been looking for a novella, so I'll probably give Every Heart a go. I'll look into all of them! Thank you for this 🙃

    Also orbital sounds like it has serious potential with the right mood. I watched a documentary a few years ago following astronauts coming back to earth and how difficult it is mentally and physically to readjust to everything here. So that is kinda in the same vein but the initial adjustment of being there first. Sounds super interesting. Added to the list!!!

    Happy New Year! Tin Foil Butterfly sounds super interesting- never heard of it! I want to read more horror 😅 I'm sad you're getting rid of before the coffee gets cold- but I know you've read a lot of emotion heavy stuff recently so I can get how that just wasn't for you. I don't think A Little Life is for me haha. I do want to get to God of the Woods at some point! I feel you on the plot thing- Its been awhile since I've read anything with an amazing plot 😭

    • @claireandherbooks
      @claireandherbooks 9 днів тому

      Yeah, tbh Tinfoil Butterfly is like...light horror? Like I could definitely forget that's even the book's genre. It's just kinda creepy is all. But a breeze to read. A Little Life definitely isn't for everyone haha I saw you just got 'Betty' and I actually donated my copy before reading it cause that one sounds worse to me 🙈I would be very curious to hear your opinion on God of the Woods. Especially since hyped books sometimes don't vibe with you too well (same).

    I agree that audiobooks really help when in a slump- for some reason it feels like a lot less effort 😂 I need you to tell me if continuing Mistborn is worth it haha. I haven't read any hunger games books but I think I might pick up the new one when it comes out. And I don't think Red Rising and Hunger Games are the same at all but I understand the comparison in describing where the books go in terms of kids fighting/killing each other in a sort of game thing. I've been meaning to listen to Dallergut for awhile now but now I am not so sure 😅 I don't know if I can do Crying in H Mart especially if its about cancer because my fiance had cancer earlier this year and I do not like reliving it lol.

    I've been saying Ove incorrectly for years. I don't usually watch the movie after reading a book that I like because I've been disappointed too many times, but I think I'll give it a go after your experience. If you're after a good classic lit to try I recommend The Scarlet Pimpernel it's a mix of mystery, historical fiction, and romance.

    I definitely was taking notes while watching this so I could remember everything. Okay so I've never read Tolstoy, but you know how I feel about classics, so I've got to try it at some point!!! I totally agree about those long-winded, super academic intros in the classics that tell you absolutely everything you could possibly know and it's just not a good place to put my mind in before starting the actual story. Back of the book would be better. They had that in the Dracula copy I read and I started it and didn't finish that! I can't believe you didn't like the Keanu Reeves book. Nooooo!!! I'm sad now because you were so excited about it! ;((( I'm so giddy about you listening to The Hunger Games!!!! I haven't read them in many yearssss, so the audiobooks need to be listened to by me! If I don't read Red Rising in 2025, you have permission to disown me!! I agree with you about some of the secondary characters being less interesting in the book vs. the movie because of what the actors did for them: Haymitch, Cinna, Effie... just the beginning of that list. And this is the case for me where the movies make me like the book more, which happens for me a lot with these major series from my youth, like Twilight and Harry Potter. Divergent series too! I'm pumped about you Red Rising vs. Hunger games video! I'm happy because Greenlights is available on Libby to I've added it to the list! Crying in H Mart 😭😭😭😭✨️ "It makes you realize how much we have in common at our core, no matter where we come from, no matter what we've been taught. There are some things that are just at the core of humanity that make the world feel smaller in a nice way." You nailed it!! P.s. I'm starting Slewfoot this week!!! Thank you so much for the shout out at the beginning. As much as we love reading and the book world, sometimes it is so so difficult to stay motivated. But you do the same thing for me- I love watching your videos and chatting with you all the time about our book adventure and our lives and motivating eachother to reach our dreams and goals. The algorithm does suck haha it's frustrating that they make it hard to discover small channels. I always am trying to see if creators have any other channels linked on their 'about' page, but that's super hit and miss.

    LOL Grace if Kings is not for everyone as it is very slow but something did it for me and I am typically not into slow books- I will say I just finished the Wall of Storms (the sequel) via audio book and the narrator was fantastic. There are a lot of different side stories some more boring than others but they all come into play eventually and you understand why they were there. But totally respect that it's not for you 😂 Parable of the Sower was a lot and I've been putting off Talents because of it 😅 I liked Kindred better but its still very dark and upsetting. SLEWFOOT WAS GREAT! 😂 I loved the One Piece netflix show and I've seen one of the one piece movies but I can't do anime like that for some reason- it's too much. I don't really think there is a moral of the story for Beautiful Darkness- to me it was like a lord of the flies situation but weirder and darker

    Okay okay, so many amazing things mentioned in this video, i hope I remember it all! 1. I'm super sad A Space Between Worlds was a flop. The concept is so cool. Womp. 2. I just started A Man Called Ove so I'm really pumped about that 3. I put a hold on for Slewfoot at the library but it's an 11 week wait 😮 haha, but I'll definitely let you know when i finish it! 4. I'm 100% putting heap house on my audio book tbr- ganna listen VERY soon because omg Edward Carey writes children's books?!?! Mind. Blown. 5. Thank you SO much for the amazing shout outs 🎉 I feel so special!!!! ❤❤❤❤😊😊❤😊😊

      Oh man. So much to talk about with Crying in H Mart. I wish more books were so open and vulnerable. It's so intensely comforting seeing that other people fall apart just as much as me and are still okay.

    Bats!!!! The one about the garlic sounds SOOO adorable and cute. First, thank you for introducing me to graphoc novels. They are so handy when I need something different, something less intense when I'm sleeeeepy especially! I definitely agree that sometimes the words themselves are almost too rudimentary and obvious, but the art always saves it. I never paid attention to graphic novels, but once your eyes are open to them, you see them EVERYWHERE! YOU CAN'T UNSEE THEM. This also makes me want to crack open some super old comic books Matt has sitting in the attic, untouched and calling my name!

      I do really think you'll like Garlic and the Vampire. I have the CHONKIEST graphic novel on the TBR for next month. Like....she's encyclopedia thick. Girl record your break in to the comic stash. I wanna see what's up there!
