Toning the panels
In this video I show how I tone the freshly gessoed panels. The last step before they are ready to be painted on!

Thanks for the comment!
love from dublin ireland
Thanks Jaden!
Cool as usual!
Peonies in the wild would flip me out. They are one of my top 5 flowers but do not grow this far south. My attempt at the chain link fence would eat away my patience but I like the balance between the nature and the man made which you also convey with the warehouse example. Those trees! So much of your work is like childhood memories that we often confuse with dreams because family members don't recall it the same. Your paintings are like still shots of The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in my mind. Thanks for the talk through, Matt!
Thanks for showing your book. I'm a sketchbook tour video junkie to keep me motivated. How do you determine what kind of paint to use? I am getting back into it after being dormant since the 90's with the handful of fashion classes that required use of acrylic and watercolor. Beautiful calico 😻
Hi J2_G Thanks for your comment! I'm always guilt tripping myself because I don't do enough sketching in either watermedia or drawing, for water based media, I use gouache and watercolor interchangeably on my pallet. While I love the opaqueness of gouache I also love the luminosity of watercolor washed over a pure white paper. Also I use white gouache when all else fails. I haven't touched acrylic since High school, but there is no reason not to use it in conjunction with and probably over, other watermedia. There is nothing wrong with experimenting, have fun with it! Our cat, Penny is he best! A good mouser, and all around good cat. Thank you!
This was a delight. The algorithm didn't find you until a few weeks ago. I can relate to your approach to subjects with regards to your mentions of value, composition, lighting and being quiet (the cobalt is great, btw). My interpretation of "your era" is well executed in your use of muted color. Something I constantly crave considering I was born too late. Thank you for sharing your process Matt.
Thank you, your comment means a lot to me.
That’s looking good!
Thank you!
Gray is ok on this day!

thats a beautiful painting!

Sometimes I feel like the grey days are the best days for art cause there is less harsh shadows, but maybe its just the scarcity of it that gets me happy? Either way, I love how it turned out and I hope you keep the grey day art coming!
Hi Hailey, One thing about grey days when plein air painting is you have much more time to see the scene without light and shadow shapes changing, and they change quickly. I still like the sunny days, and I love the shadows! Thanks and best of luck to you, Matt
Very nice plein air paintings!
Thank you Marc!
