Things to see - Vernon's Folly, Marchington Barracks and WW2 buildings in Hixon
A short video of a few more points of interest.
Vernon's Folly is a miniature castle like structure that is found on private land just North of Sudbury Hall on the border of Staffordshire and Derbyshire. It was built estimated in 1723 by the then Lord Vernon (owner of Sudbury Hall) as a deercote. It is a sham castle with single brick walls meant purely to disguise its original purpose.
Marchington Barracks was home to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps until 1973. The local camp remained in military use until many years later, housing the Green Goddess fire engines that kept being wheeled out for each firefighters' strike. Attempts have been made to repurpose the site over the years, for paintballing, airsoft and off road motorcycling, but these have all fallen through due to local opposition. So it sits abandoned and decaying. Incidentally this barracks is a morror to Parson's Barracks in Telford, using exactly the same building patterns and placement. The cookhouse and offices etc are no longer there, and the armoury / ammo bunker are either concealed by woodland or have been knocked down.
Hixon was home to a light aircraft wing during WW2, with remains of the airfield still visible. Around Hixon and Stowe a lot of WW2 era buildings can still be found, with the majority knocked down in the early 90s to make way for housing redevelopment. However you can still find the odd relic here and there. This building was believed to be a hospital or med centre, and has been used as a cow shed for the last few years. It was certainly in a severe state of disrepair when I last visited it in the late 80s. Rumours have been around for a few years that this building, accessible from Egg Lane was going to be repurposed into a doctor's surgery for Hixon, which has never really been well served by GPs (the corner room in the village hall doesn't really count).
And finally a bit of footage of St Peter's Church, purely because I have family connections (and friends sadly).
4K footage shot from DJI Mini 2 drone in spring 2023.

2338470 Corporal David O'Neill RAOC. I was one of the first soldiers ti live in these barracks when they opened late in 1957. I was undertaking my National Service & employed at CVD Marchington which supplied 'B' vehicles across Europe to units of the army. These barracks were luxurious as previously we had lived at the Nissan hut camp at Etwall (now a caravan dealership) & travelled daily to the depot by TCV (troop carrying vehicle). I ended up as Progress Clerk responsible for all vehicles passing through the depot before being sent to army units across Europe.
Can I be in one of your videos dad
