MS20 mini vs MS20: original how does it compare?
The Korg MS-20 is a classic analog synth with some fairly unique features that are not found on other synths. Taking a critical ear to the 2013 reissue of this synth, I compare several sounds between an original MS-20 and the new MS-20 mini.

Nice
The vintage one is so much more punchy and full sounding!
I think while the volume knobs might be at the same level on both, the amplifiers or something are slightly different. Just seems like the original ms-20 is slightly louder
Original has more bass and oomph like the other comment says.
Hello. Thanks for review. Tell me please, if you're used some external effects on both synth? Now Korg have Ms20 fs and I want to know, what the difference between them besides the secondary filter? I have not much money to buy big brother of ms20mini, but is there..Thanks
I feel like with either of these if you nitpick enough you can get them to sound so close to the same that it doesn't even matter
No point in getting the orig when the mini is cheaper
@@prodigalsun1678 but the orig feels better
Compared to the VST and App versions there is no difference at all between these
Thanks for making this. You have helped me decide on getting one. Thorough and to the point, cheers
Excellent comparison. I love the MS20 sound - it goes from warm and vintage and to straight out gnarly. For £550 you really can't go wrong!
Damn! I had no real interest in the MS-20 but having heard the filter overdrive on an audio input I may just buy one for that purpose alone! Pure Prodigy sounds.
This is by far the best comparison between these that I've seen. I used to have an original MS-20, and I now have the mini, and the subtle (and more obvious) differences highlighted by this video are definitely consistent with what I noticed too. But most of the differences really are subtle, and I think the MS-20 mini is great and actually really close to the original.
The Mini just sounds a bit brighter which has been the norm for pretty much every re-issue a log synth out there. Not sure the vintage one is more bass-y as much as the new one is just brighter...great video, Jon!
i wonder if it's an age thing of a limitations of modern production thing
osc's are less bright when they are old ;
My MS20 which was serviced by kortec has the same pink noise to the mini. When I got this MS20 I didn't like that pink noise because it sounded very different from what you usually hear as "pink noise," it wasn't smooth and that resulted in S&H patch (mod pitch/filter) sounding very ugly compare to with white noise which was smooth. I thought "pink noise" should be just "darker" version of white noise. So I contacted kortec and sent the unit asked for the fix and the engineer sent me an oscilloscope capture as a proof and claimed it was true to the original condition. Just for your information tho..
so my question is will the larger kit version have the subtlety of the original or will it be more like the mini?
The original sounds better
why?
My impression too. The original has some more "body" to the sound.
I think the original just has more roll off in the highs. Or maybe it is saturation?
