Nostalgic rambles about high school maths
South Africa
Приєднався 8 січ 2024
Welcome to my nostalgic rambles about high school maths! I'm Tami, a software dev turned high school maths teacher turned software dev again (-_-) I enjoy doing maths problems, and I hope that by doing them out loud on my videos, I can help someone out there while I have fun :D In each video, I attempt to solve one question from a past South African Grade 12 maths exam, sight unseen. I try to explain how my mind makes sense of the question and subsequently crafts a solution. If I mess up, I try to go over my steps and identify where I went wrong, which I also hope can be a useful learning exercise for all of us. #grade12maths grade12 #grade12maths #grade12exam #maths #highschoolmaths #nsc #ieb
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 10.3 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Probability
The memo solves this word problem using a tree diagram, but my inclination went more towards two-way contingency tables - potato, potato. More than the tool we ended up using, the bigger task with this question was translating a problem from words to maths (and boy were there wooooorrrrddddssss 😂). I had to puzzle quite a bit for this one and in hindsight, I’m thinking maybe this would have been a useful place to try to use trial and error first in order to figure out a game plan for the question. Like I have often said, the goal of trial and error isn’t necessarily to stumble on the answer by mistake, but rather to inspect how it is that you verify your guess. That often gives you a clue about the equation that you are implicitly trying to solve. In this case, I could have started by guessing that maybe there are 70 meat sandwiches, which would mean that there are 50 cheese sandwiches. Do these numbers match up with the probability that the question provided? Anyway. Fun question that turns out not to be very difficult computationally, but just tricky to find a starting point.

DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 10.2 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Probability
Переглядів 47 годин тому
In this question, the two keys were independent events and the Union Rule. Using these, we were able to set up what ended up being a very straightforward equation to solve. Those two key equations are very, very important ones to remember when you are doing probability work, so if you haven’t yet, make it a point to commit them to memory. DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 9 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Calculus | Cubic functions
7 годин тому
This question starts out on a tricky note, but we end up going on an interesting exploration about cubic functions where one of the x-intercepts is also a turning point - we discover a fun fact that might come in handy for future exercises! From there, it’s kind of smooth sailing. We are asked to find the other turning point of the graph, we solve an inequality using the graph, we think about t...
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 7.2 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Finance | Sinking funds
Переглядів 17 годин тому
I’m not sure how useful my finance videos are because for the life of me I don’t know how to work the present-value future-value what what formulae 🙈 So I think my finance videos are really only for those two, three people who share my confusion about the formulae and prefer to use geometric series directly for finance questions 😅😂 Anyway. The crux of this question is the sinking fund: given th...
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 6 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Functions & calculus | Quadratic functions
Переглядів 27 годин тому
This question touches on many different aspects of parabolas. We find its turning point using calculus, we use its definition to find the y-coordinates of various points on the curve, we figure out at what point a certain tangent touches the parabola, and we also solve a quadratic inequality. Highlights: Finding the turning point using calculus Using a function to calculate the y-coordinate of ...
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 3.2 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Sequences & series | Geometric patterns
7 годин тому
This question hinges on us knowing the properties of a converging series: the fact that a geometric series will only converge if its common-ratio is a non-zero number between -1 and 1. Actually solving the problem though reaches deep into our algebra manipulation wizardries: we factorise quadratic and cubic expressions, we use some long division, we use some remainder theorem, we solve an inequ...
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 3.1 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Sequences & series | Geometric patterns
Переглядів 27 годин тому
This question starts out with a textbook flavour: given a geometric sequence, find the following term. So we use the geometric Tn formula to solve that. The next question initially seems like “Huh? How did we get here??” It’s a sum written in sigma notation, so we need to expand it and see what kind of a series it is. Turns out it’s a geometric series, so we are then able to use the geometric S...
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 2.2 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Sequences & series | Quadratic patterns
Переглядів 67 годин тому
In this question, we spend a little bit of time revisiting the basic mechanics of a quadratic pattern, bombastic equations and algebra aside. We then get to the bombastic algebra next 😂 We look at how to find the general term of a quadratic pattern, and in this video we use a system of simultaneous equations with three unknowns to do that. You know how I love me some elimination, so that’s the ...
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 1.3 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Algebra | Exponents
Переглядів 117 годин тому
Yoh there was an era where these kinds of questions were faaaaaaaaves 😂 I don’t know if that’s still the case. Anyway. The question needs us to use our knowledge of exponent laws to simplify an expression involving very big exponents. We mainly use the multiplication and division laws to figure it out. Highlights: Problem-solving using laws of exponents
DBE May 2022 Paper 1, Question 1.2 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Algebra | Exponents and equations
Переглядів 307 годин тому
In this problem-solving video, we are first asked to solve an equation involving an unknown in the denominator of a fraction. It works out to be a quadratic equation, which we choose to solve using factorisation. Next up, we are asked to translate our result to an equation involving unknowns in the exponent. This results in us needing to solve a basic exponential equation, so we look at differe...
IEB May 2024 Paper 2, Question 13 [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Euclidean geometry & Trigonometry
Переглядів 51Місяць тому
This question isn’t your typical busy messy rider. Instead, you’re invited to make it messy yourself, by filling in your own constructions as you see fit! My approach to the question is very Euclidean geometryish, drawing on a couple of our favourite theorems - tan-chord, angle at centre - and also some of the good old basics, like the properties of isosceles triangles. It uses a liiiittle bit ...

When I started answering this question, I didn’t have a clear strategy upfront or anything, so I guess I re-discovered the power of colouring pencils and the process of elimination - what theorems remain relevant to this context, given the kind of information presented in this question. I’m typing this description at 1am; it’s feeling a bit on the dreamy side; very heavy on the rambly feels 😂 A...
IEB May 2024 Paper 2, Question 10b [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Trigonometry | Compound angle identities
Переглядів 18Місяць тому
This question indirectly gives us an inequality to solve, and initially it seems like a trickier inequality than the kinds we encounter in questions about trig graphs, but with the help of compound angle identities, reduction formulae and/or trig graph transformations, we are able to distill an equivalent inequality that turns out to be very simple to solve. I made a mistake early on in the vid...
IEB May 2024 Paper 2, Question 10a [Grade 12 Mathematics] | Trigonometry | Equations
Переглядів 16Місяць тому
They give us a trig equation to which we need to find all the solutions that lie in a specific interval and that also satisfy another restriction they’ve told us. We need to strategise about which double-angle identities to use in order to get our equation to a place where we are just solving a quadratic equation. Finally we use our knowledge of the quotient identity (the tan identity) to make ...

While the context of this question is trig graphs, it first sinks our teeth into a very meaty equation, where we end up needing to do some fancy gymnastics using our basic identities and a small quadratic equation flair. Up next, of course we get to sketch the graphs, which tests our understanding of trig graph transformations. Lastly, we use the graphs to solve an inequality.
