A day at Bearizona, and Edge of the World Trail Jeeping
Ordered mine for my thru hike today
Thank you for the review. Do you think it can be used as a mid layer with a long-sleeve base layer underneath, or is it too tight? I have a Compressport 3D Thermo UltraLight Racing Hoodie and I was thinking of layering.
Yep you could probably fit another layer underneath, it’s got a lot of stretch to it.
Love it! I haven’t been up there yet but it’s in my bucket list. Great video❤❤❤
It's not the gore-tex that needs to re activate, it is the DWR on the outside layer of the jacket. Goretex is 100% waterproof, if you think your jacket is soaked, it is most likely the humid from the body trapped inside jacket, hence you need to open the arm vent.
Arizona is full of bucket list hikes.
Hello mate, thanks for the really helpful review. I'm in need of a pair of shoes and was recently gifted a sizeable voucher for La Sportiva so it seems I am stuck having to pick from their lineup (no bad thing)... Do you think these would be feasible for some hiking I have planned in Peru (80km Salkantay trek, various 1 or 2 day treks) or would they be overkill? I'd also looked at the TX4 but unsure on that due to the toe box as apparently that can be painful. Otherwise my walking/hiking is pretty chill & kept to the Irish mountains. Sorry, total noob question but I found their lineup a little overwhelming so it would be great to hear from someone who knows what to look for. Thanks!
@@alimul22689 if you have a wide foot, I’d stick with Raptors. They can be a little heavy though, so if you want to move quicker I’d go with a lighter trail running type shoe like the new Prodigio or the Jackal. La Sportiva have a good chart to explain the purpose of each shoe: www.lasportiva.com/en/mountain-running-technical-informations
Thanks for this review - actually what i needed before pulling the trigger...have been let down by the feeling of quality before with Arc'teryx products - so lets see if this one delivers! PS where is your accent from? Sounds very British but then you use imperial measurement for temps :P
@@kc-me6wl glad to hear it was helpful! I’m an expat living in the States :)
Nice👍
@@walkingwithawookie1097 I had checked out your Mound Mountain video, since it was one of the only ones available on UA-cam haha!
@ Haha! I was going to stop by there again last month but the Temps were still in the low 90’s so I just stayed down in the Reavis Valley. You guys took the scenic route🥾
Awesome climb! Btw 7:27 is Pinal peak, unless you meant the mountain in front of it.
Thanks! Mystery solved, appreciate it!
Thanks for the video! I’m debating hoody vs jacket - both have their positives and negatives. Thoughts?
@@richarde1355 good question. If you plan on wearing this for everyday use including in a business/commuting sense, going hoodless looks more conservative and is a better choice. However if this will be for strictly outdoor sports/hiking use, then hooded would be the way to go.
I keep looking at the Atom but I've yet to think of a scenario where it's better than the Proton. I run warm so the Proton's all-over breathability is really useful. I'm thinking about the Atom as an about town piece since it's cheaper than the Epsilon, but I'm not even sure about that. Maybe I'm just the wrong audience for it 🤔
@@Aliessil I would consider the Atom more versatile than the Proton and for a wider range of conditions.
Freat jacket
Can you use this jacket on hot summer days when raining or will it be to hot
@@AndrewHillis-k9l if you’re concerned about this running too hot or if you’re in a more humid climate you could always go for the Beta SL. However it is very breathable and can be used year round for the most part.
@@lifehiker Beta SL is just the renamed beta LT no? at least from what I understood.
Yep the SL is the new model taking over the LT. Only different I can see is that on the SL they have used harder wearing material on the shoulder 70D, rest 40D. instead of the LT being all 40D. From what I understand@thebigcheese2418
@thebigcheese2418 yes and this is something I am adding to the description so there is no misleading or confusion.
Is this beta LT 2024 gore Tex epe in vitality color?
@@KT-ty3uh it looks like vitality is not currently offered, but I imagine it will likely return again.
I bought the Atom LT hoody and Atom SV back around 2014. The Atom LT was traded in a few months ago. Arc'teryx gave me 30% of retail price back in September. I felt that the LT was flattening out in the back as I drive a lot. And it was my favorite jacket. The SV got less use, although it is still a fantastic jacket. The SV is a true winter jacket. The 100gram Coreloft is serious warmth for the weight. It has lost some loft, but compared to the new Atom Heavyweight it doesn't seem like much. I did use my trade in credit for the new Atom Hoody in beautiful Vitality. I do use the Atom Hoody as a midlayer in cold conditions. The fleece side panels will let you know when it's too windy out. I'm hoping to get another 10 years out of this piece. Hopefully the 60 gram Coreloft Compact will not flatten in the back like the old LT as the insulation has already been compacted.
Could you also use Centigrade as I have no idea what Fahrenheit equates to. Thanks.
Just convert it online brother !
The Atom Heavyweight is a much better option to use as a casual/less active cold weather jacket. Heavier duty insulation and smaller under-arm ventilation panels compared to the standard Atom. The Heavyweight is also the "regular" fit instead of "fitted," which allows for easier layering underneath.
@@SLI1337 totally agree.

@@ianmartin1947 glad to hear it helped.
I'm glad you mentioned the part about them being just nice to have, no matter your age or your ability. It's funny, but you'll see some beginner hikers use them, and then experienced hikers will think they're above them, but then the VERY experienced hikers tend to have them again 😉
Glad to hear that point resonated. It’s a shame the negative stigma that trekking poles can carry. I’m hoping if I use them now, I won’t have to replace my knees later on!

Awesome! I’ve only done a section of the Weatherford when I started at Lockett Meadow and hiked to Humphreys. That elevation is no joke👍
@@walkingwithawookie1097 thanks! Yep definitely no joke! I’ll keep this a “once in a few years” type hike.
My Atom SV is still kicking after almost 10 years. The loft is still there, which i find absolutely amazing. I do admit that i have babied it as much as possible. Regular washings too.
What size did you go with? Thinking I need an M but curious to see what you used. Thanks 🤙
@@andrewfalkiewicz8396 I have the large - I’m 6ft 200 pounds and this seemed to work fairly well for me. However, it’s no longer a pack I actively wear, my go-to for short day hikes is now the Black Diamond Distance 15, which I highly recommend.
@@lifehiker hi, are you also size L in the distance 15?
@@Surfkaster yep size L, here’s my review of the Distance 15: ua-cam.com/video/82zYBFlcwSg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@lifehiker I'm curious ; I've watched both videos ; Is there a specific reason why you decided to switch to the Distance ? Anything bothersome with the Pursuit?
@ good question. Nothing particularly wrong with the Pursuit. Although I did sometimes feel like having a waistband was a little constraining for faster hiking. For quicker hiking, I’m enjoying the freedom and simplicity of the Distance.
Amazing views. Fantastic video. Enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing. sub & 👍2
@@KhurshidsChannel thank you very much!
Does it say on the shoes where they are made? On La Sportiva´s website they state that their products are made in italy, romania and china. But they are not specific on their product display page on where specific shoes are made. I dont want shoes made in china. We saw what happened to Salomon when they started manufacturing their shoes there, they didn´t even hold up 2 months.
This particular shoe has a label inside with “Made in China”. On their website they claim: Our factories in Italy manufacture about 60% of our products. Factories in China and Vietnam manufacture 28% and 12% respectively.
I have a pair of Salomon ultra 360 GTX and it says MADE IN CAMBODIA
I have a pair of that model and they are made in China. They still seem well build so.
How waterproof is this? Could this handle very heavy rain?
@@MusclesfromB it’s definitely water resistant. For heavier rain I would put the contents in a plastic bag as an extra precaution.
@@lifehiker Thanks for the reply. I'm kinda looking for something more waterproof that is comfortable enough to have a quick run with
Id look at Hyperlite, their new fast pack looks ideal for this use case.
Anyone looking for a vest would want to know about up front storage. Both sides. And options for carry. Side pockets - only for poles or water or other stuff. Storage on wings? Not enough detail
@@Sharetheroad3333 thanks for the feedback. The front storage, as I mentioned could accommodate up to a Nalgene bottle in terms of capacity. The sides are suitable only for trekking poles.
What I meant by up front storage is, both sides of the pack. Some packs have a zip pocket on one side and nothing on the other. I missed the Nalgene bottle comment. Are you saying a 32 ounce Nalgene could go up front?
- Timestamp 2:46: I mention the convenience of the side pockets, if one was zipped I would have definitely mentioned that. - Timestamp 3:02 I mention that I have been able to fit a Nalgene in the exterior pocket. One can infer I mean a 32 ounce bottle since that size is synonymous with the brand.
@@lifehiker yes. Nalgene means 32 ounce to me. Hence the reason I was clarifying. If it was a 32 ounce, was that comfortable? When I was talking about zippers, I am referring to the storage up front (on my person front). Some packs have twin sides on the vest. Some vests are different on each side. That’s the detail I am trying to get.
@@Sharetheroad3333it was comfortable in terms of the Nalgene fitting in the exterior pocket, the material is very stretchy. I usually use a hydration bladder with it rather than the bottle. One side of the front vest is zipped, the other side is not.
Solid review. Have a few questions I’m hoping you might be able to help me with. How is the sizing on these? I’ve La Sportiva run small so you should size up 1/2 to a full size depending on what you’re looking for. I have wide feet but Adidas ultraboost 21 and 22 size 14 fit great so I’m wondering if a 14.5 or 15 would be the way to go in the La Sportivas? Lastly, how is the sole holding up? I do a lot of running in the city I live in and the cement and asphalt is tearing up my Adidas runners so was thinking a more trail focused runner might hold up better on the rough surfaces. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
@@MCFCTheMadHatter, I sized up half a size and that seemed to be enough room for me. As far as the sole, it still seems to be holding up. Although if you’re a city runner mainly, the robustness of the Raptors might be overkill. You might want to look at a lighter shoe even, like the new Prodigio which I hear is fairly wide now too.
Used this for a run commute to work! 7miles after getting off the train at London Paddington Can’t fit a laptop, but an iPad Pro with change of clothes and shoes.. love this bag
That’s really cool!
not sure if i want this or salomon adv skin 12 for a day pack / mountain pack any advice?
If you have any doubt that 12 liters won’t be enough I’d go with the Distance 15.
Been a few years since I’ve been there. Great video👍👍
Thank you good sir! 👍
I will be vacationing in Arizona in June and plan on hiking to the summit of Pikes Peak as long as there are no forest fires to close the trail. In 2019 I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back in one day and did okay. I am just concerned about being able to handle the thinner air above 10000 feet.
Do you have an AllTrails of the mountain you’re looking at hiking? I don’t know of a Pikes Peak in Arizona above 10k feet.
@@lifehiker Oops! I meant to say Humphrey's Peak. I was thinking of Pikes Peak when I was typing my comment because that is where I learned that at 10000 feet I started to get a headache. I think I will get that app before going out there. Thanks
@@moosefactory133, I think if you take your time and try acclimating to Flagstaff elevation for a day or two, then then going up Humphreys won’t be as bad.
the real purpose of this jacket is to tell people that they're poor.
What size do you recommend for me? I am 5’5” and 146ish lbs. I have the Patagonia Micro puff jacket in a small (however, it slightly feels tight around the waist and chest)
I’d probably try a small for a tailored fit, but medium might allow for more layering. I usually buy multiple sizes and return one.
@@lifehiker I just watched another guy who is 5’8” and 125 lbs and wears an XS so maybe the small is the way to go for me
@@ethanmietzner5218 nice glad to hear you worked it out!

Yeah I’d say it is. Maybe more technical though.
How about Catalina State Park to Mt Lemmon? Just sayin'...
Oh just you wait… it’ll be coming soon on the channel, thanks for watching :)
Hi mate! Just wondering what size bladder would fit in here? Do you know if a 3L would fit or would it be too big? What size have you got in? Thanks!
Hey man, so a narrow 2L fits pretty comfortably in the pack’s bladder netting but you could certainly experiment with a 3L. Usually I’ll throw a few of those 2Ls in if I’m doing a 10 mile hike. Here’s the one I have, there are probably more affordable options but so far this hasn’t leaked: a.co/d/9NnabGJ
