Full story : AITA for telling my parents how I felt about their gift? I (16 F) recently turned 16. When I was 13, I got my first phone, which cost $100. I had this phone for about a year and a half before I broke it a few days before I started high school. Since it was so close to the first day of school, my mom gave me three options: Wait a few weeks for it to get fixed, wait for an upgrade that I wanted, or get a new phone immediately no matter what model. I choose the latter one, and the only thing that was available at the store we went to cost $300. My mom was hesitant at first, but since I was starting high school, she told me she would buy it, but I might get upgraded later on in high school. Fast forward to my birthday and I haven’t had the phone for more than a year. My parents handed me a gift, which they said was the most expensive one they had bought me. When I opened it, it was a brand new phone, even more expensive than the one I had at the moment. My reaction was a mix of happiness and “Why?”. Something significant to add here is that we’ve been having a bit of financial trouble recently, and when my birthday started coming up, I told my parents that I wished to keep the $300 phone since it was still technically brand new and that getting a new phone seemed like a waste of money. My parents noticed my reaction but didn’t say anything, and we kept going with the party. After it was over, they asked me if something was wrong with the gift. I told them that nothing was really wrong with the gift and that I appreciated it, but it just seemed like a waste of money especially due to the situation we were in at the moment. My dad got mad and said I was being ungrateful, and my mom agreed. I replied saying that I didn’t mean to come off as rude or ungrateful, but surely if we were having financial trouble, wouldn’t buying me a new phone when the one I had still worked be a waste of money. As of right now, we aren’t talking to each other. AITA?

I have no issue with women and men being friends. I have male friends and there isn’t a romantic or sexual relationship between us. But whenever they get in relationships, I have a talk with their new partner. Explaining our relationship, I am honest about our past, explain why we aren’t romantically or sexually compatible so that isn’t a question, and I ask if she has any boundaries she wants me to respect. Because my friendship with them means I want them to be happy, I want their relationships to work. My friendships have lasted decades, they will not be impacted by having different boundaries if it makes their partner feel secure. In this scenario, they aren’t only dating, they are married. They have the most special relationship in their lives, the top priority of people in their life should be their spouse. As a friend you do not get to put yourself above that relationship and if you value your friendship, that means taking their partner’s feelings into consideration as well. So yeah, marriage is a huge deal and I totally get acting like a biatch if you think that is threatened. So yeah, sorry OP, but you and the husband are the Ahole if you prioritise your friendship over their marriage. And it’s quite clear OP sees a competitor in the wife and a true friend wouldn’t do that. So while I do not condone the wife’s behaviour. I do believe that OP and the husband have a responsibility to make the wife feel safe in her own marriage. Clearly she feels threatened, and I can’t imagine how hard that must be. To be afraid your partner isn’t honest or someone is trying to take your spouse, it must be awful. If the marriage breaks that means moving, splitting assets, a dream of a future taken away. It’s both emotional and financially draining to go through a divorce.

I think OP is an AH. Hear me out. CLEARLY there is something going on between the couple. Wife doesn't seem insecure about OP, she seems insecure about Husband and his feelings towards OP. OP is making everything about her and exacerbating the issue instead of being a true best friend and talking to Husband about his contribution to the drama and assessing how she can help (instead of you know, blowing up on Wife) I think to anyone who's outside the situation it's clear that Husband has unrequited feelings about OP and instead of taking a step back and allowing for a healthy relationship with her supposed friend OP is stirring the pot and acting oblivious. I was mommy my mom was mamma because he couldn't say grandma. His dad kept calling me mamma. My son would be so confused because grandma wasn't there so he could never figure what dad was talking about. Of course everyone starts running through names because it's natural. No. Fuck the mil. My own MOTHER does this to my kid. She also addressed him by my brothers name. The very same one who abused me. She will correct the misnamming, but its a 50/50 if she corrects 'mommy'. Honestly, bacsie if my situation the mommy bugs me less that her addressing my son with my brothers name. My family loves to gush and compare my son and brother. Only my mother knows what he did to me. Shes only ever protected him. She still doesnt want me talking to people about it.
