Even more interesting is how Kasparov won the 1995 championship against Anand. Anand took the lead in game 9. In game 10, every time Kasparov made a move, he got up to go to the bathroom and slammed the door behind him so hard the room shook. The young and mild mannered Anand did not complain to the arbiter, who also did not act. Bullying destroys lives, and bullied children suffer lifelong low self esteem. I don't care how good his moves are on the board; if he needs such despicable tactics in order to win, then he is no champion.

@@TaniasUncle I am certainly not making it an excuse. But (a) Kasparov clearly thought it would affect the outcome or else he wouldn't have behaved the way he did. And (b) is the behavior and the win at all costs mindset OK? If yes, why not threaten to break your opponent's legs or have him abducted?

And here I am getting my first win in classical OTB chess against a grandmaster at the age of 43 and my second OTB win vs a GM a few days before my 44th birthday ( Ok, the second GM was 54 and had his rating significantly dropped, but the first one was only 46 and was around 2500 FIDE on the day of the game, former 2600 player). Prior to that I only played one other GM in classical OTB when I was a teenager and I lost ( so the score is 2-1 for me for now). But to be honest, Kasparov is right in general, the two GMs I defeated were past their prime ( but I am not so young either)

Carlsen would beat Spassky easily 6 wins 6 draws zero losses! The highest tournament elo rating score is Fabiano Caruana 8,5/10 StLouis elo 3100! Karpov 11/13 Linares 1994 elo score 3040! Alekhine in San Remo 1930 elo score 3040! Fischer and Kasparov their Best tournament scores only 2990! Karpov has won over 160 super grand Master tournaments! Fischer won zero only inter zonals 1962 197! Fischer was Second in Santa Monica 1966 behind blunder maker Spassky! Fischer did not won Havanna 1965! Fischer didn't quit chess because he had anything better to do, he was just burned out and couldn't continue. His total immersion training regimen had him studying chess night and day for 15 years and he couldn't keep it up. Every other world champion was able to balance chess and real life better than Fischer did. He didn't make like Alekhine and avoid just one person, he avoided all chess.

Nobody saw this coming lol. They interviewed over 100 GMs recently on who is the GOAT of chess and Alekhine was in first place with a considerable gap between him and the rumnner-up. True, Alekhine was never able to win against Capa before the match but neither was Fisher against Spassky in 1972. I would argue that Alekhine pulled a bigger defeat over Capablanca than Fisher over Spassky.

I could easily see Fischer going down by 3 maybe 4 points in a first-to-ten-win match (much like Kasparov did), and then grinding back to a 10-8 victory. It would be grueling to play and fascinating to watch. It took Fischer a while to "figure out" Spassky (he had not won a single game from him prior to 1972), but once he did, he dominated him. Karpov was in incredible form, but he lacked Fischer's energy. Being a much stronger opponent than Spassky, Karpov would have forced Fischer to a higher level, again just like he forced Kasparov to a higher level. Once you have achieved your life's ambition, it is very difficult to summon the energy to repeat it. It would be great if those who knew him best would comment on his mental state after winning in 1972 and discuss why he didn't defend his title.

Fischer didn't play a serious game after his victory in 1972. In an interview with Johnny Carson he said he will continue to play but not too many, so he didnt't want to give away his secrets. Now in the 60's he would not play for some time also. So this is his nature, but rest assured you he study the games and Karpov games. In an interview, he states Karpov refuse to play him according to win 10 games and 9/9 he retains the title. Karpov should have agree to his terms, than Fiscfer would have no excuse. But Fischer real downfall was not playing this match but not playing any serious game after 1972 (1992 doesn't count). He lived for chess, it was his love just like my wife is to me. I enjoy chess and play it all night long. Why did Paul Morphy realy quit?

Even more disastrous was the beginning of the first match with Karpov. But Kasparov learned to persevere and adapt. From 0-4, he reached 3-5. Of course, it was a different rules match: you needed six wins to win. With the rules from 2000, Karpov would have won the first match. With the rules of the 80s, Krammnik probably wouldn't have won. It is a bit like the story of the Capablanca Alehin match.
