Who Killed Letha? | An interview with her best friend Shannon Crawley
Imagine the haunting echo of a mystery unsolved for over three decades; the poignant story of Letha, a girl who vanished without a trace, and the relentless quest for answers. This episode unveils the intimate memories of Shannon Crawley, Letha's best friend, who recounts the vibrancy of their youth and the harrowing turn of events that led to Letha's disappearance. Step through a portal to the rural life of the 1980s, where the innocence of teenage exploration intertwines with the grief of a family tragedy, painting a vivid backdrop for the profound loss that followed.
The heart of our conversation lies within the walls of what was once a bustling general store turned modest home, a cornerstone of community and simple living. Here, Shannon takes us on a nostalgic tour of their cherished hangouts and shared experiences, from the Jessamine Joree to the impact of Letha's older brother stepping into the patriarchal void. The tapestry of rural living, steeped in both warmth and sorrow, sets the stage for the unsettling void left by Letha's disappearance, igniting a search fraught with frustration and despair as friends and family grappled with the unknown.
As the narrative unfolds, we traverse the difficult path of the investigation - from the discovery of Letha's remains to the piercing questions that haunt Shannon and all who knew Letha. Through a raw and emotional recounting, we confront the chilling possibility of foul play and the enduring ache for closure that lingers like a shadow. This episode is not just a tale of a young life cut tragically short but a living testament to the enduring bond of friendship and the unyielding hope for justice. Join us as we honor Letha's memory and amplify the call for answers that have escaped her loved ones for far too long.

Ots veey strange to hear people so close to the cicrims talk about them. Almost like we were listening to a private conversation we shouldn't be. Most of us will never know what that is like, thank god. As much as the internet makes it seem otherwise, murder is still an uncommon crime for most od us. Until it isn't anyway.

Yeah that sounds like how everyones world was back then. There are always the couple of very bad people in the close community. They can be traced by their characteristics in general. They are good at looking good unless you are around them for a little while. People like that do it again though. You find them if you watch. Kind of sounds like with the time frame that someone killed the dad realized they got away with it then went for another victim. Sorry that happened to you. It happened once in a while where I was from. Horrible. Thanks for the post.

Sigh. All these questions proposed here along with facts, I came up with…. it was her mother or brother. I’m leaning more towards Mom and the why is that she was emotionally distant from her it seems, perhaps blamed her for her fathers death, or was annoyed she became needy of her mom after his death, and they got in a fight and punches were thrown and her anger came out she’s kept inside for how her mother treated her, and shots ended up being fired or mom beat her to death. She hid the body until after all settle down then brought her back there and buried her. And the WHY no one said anything is because if the brother did indeed know, he was too scared to lose his mom too, she was his last family member. Maybe her brother needs a lie detector test, and mom too? I think this fight already happened prior to her coming to her BFF house and she ended going back home and was then killed by her mom. That’s my gut.

I also heard that the spot that she was found had previously been searched so people said that she was moved there after the police searched that area. I’m not sure about any of this, it may have all just been gossip. Thanks for talking about Letha…I didn’t know her very well but the family always said she was a very nice young lady.

Just to be clear, at no point did I ever talk about the details of the George Floyd incident. What I said is that the incident and aftermath is the biggest watershed event in the history of American Policing, which is simply true. As painful as it remains and will remain, it is also an opportunity to look around and see what LE can (and should) do better, related to that incident directly or not. "Murder Police" is the nick name for homicide detectives, of which I was during my 28 year career in LE.

Man, I remember this story from when I was a kid. This story was all over the national news programs the morning after the murders. Nobody could comprehend that two seemingly innocent girls could kill that many people in the span of a few hours. Just goes to show what people are capable of when they are coked out of their mind. I doubt they are still a danger to society, but I doubt they will ever be released from prison, even after almost 40 years behind bars. Maybe they could speak to school children about not making the same mistakes with drugs that they made. I understand there was a film made about the murders, and that Jim Varney played the father of one of girls. My dad worked in Lexington at that time, and he drove us to the place where one of the victims was killed.
