I'd love to see a breakdown of 'Voodoo People' by The Prodigy one of these days.
The Wayne and Shuster Frontier Psychiatrist sketch was from 1983, not 1959. They were on the air for a long time!
for me, this one kraftwerk sample made the whole shadow's track brilliant
nobody here
i graduated high school in 96' and started Djing...this record taught me everything i ever wanted to know about the drumbs....
that Pugh album is awesome!
Another amazing video! I’m working my way through all of your videos, having just recently discovered them. So, you’ll probably be seeing more comments from me since your content is so freaking interesting! And I hope you have the time to make more.
Thanks so much!
Such an amazing breakdown of my favorite Justice track, thank you for this! Is there any way I could get the stems of your project please? 🙏🏻 Would love to play around with them!
It's a busy time, so I'm not sure I'll have time, but if I do, I'll post a link here.
@@KarlBoltzmann thanks so much, I understand. Would be willing to pay as well!
I appreciate that! I'll see if I can find time in the near future.
@@KarlBoltzmann legend, thank you so much!!!
Have you deconstructed any Negativeland?
Do they use any samples?
@@KarlBoltzmann Definitely, but I believe it does have some original parts and vocals. Here's a track from the second album... ua-cam.com/video/1CbtcbcTZf0/v-deo.htmlsi=cUEgOp_u7dhg87u4
Good call. I generally try to deconstruct and recreate tracks that are at least 90% samples.
Yessirrrrrr! Thanks!
the reason that McCartney song sounds so bad is blamed on him recording it at home on a Struder 4 track without a mixer so he did not have any VU metering
Yes! These are so rad! Thank You!🤛🏽❤️👍🏼
what are you doing at 7:43?? the way you were pulling and lining up the hi hats with the sample above it?!?! does that have a "name" so i can find a tutorial? When I play samples together I have to screw around warping them and the results are lackluster.... hey AWESOME video BTW....
Thanks Brian! I don't know if there is a tutorial out there specifically for that cutting and moving, but if you're using Ableton, you should be able to do it no problem. I make sure that the "fixed grid" is set to off (right click anywhere that the grid is showing) and then I place the cursor where I want to cut and hit Command + E on mac or Ctrl + E on PC and then I just click and drag to where I want the sample to be placed. It's much earlier when you are shortening the sample or speeding it up as was the case with this track because you are taking away a piece of the sample, so the pieces automatically overlap. When you are stretching a sample or slowing it down using this method, it can be a bit trickier.
6:33 well you do have an organ going there....
I got to met Dj Shadow after his show in Pittsburgh in 2003, got his autograph for my girlfriend lol...
5000 vviewa?
I think you're right about the disco call! To me it sounds like MCA is doing it by himself.
We have gotta find that drum sample. Probably my holy grail of samples yet to be found.
It is, without a doubt, the most important unknown sample for me. When I first heard that flat, boxy sounding kick, the dull bell of the ride and detuned snare, it was instantly the coolest thing I had ever heard. I would give a lot to find the origin of that sample.
@@KarlBoltzmann Doesn't help that when searching high school bands on discogs, there are way too many to closely inspect, and most songs aren't on UA-cam.
I don't think the source has been posted and or catalogued anywhere, otherwise it seems like it would have been found. It might take Shadow himself to reveal the source, but he might not even remember.
where you got the Unknown Guitar/Flute Sample?? Thank you very much for this incredible work, I was looking forward to making my own electronic mix.
I got the sample from Norman Cook (he was nice enough to gave me the all of the stems to use for this deconstruction), but it came out not too long ago that the sample is from Ruby - It's Taking a Long Time ua-cam.com/video/-08wX9kty1U/v-deo.html
@@KarlBoltzmann you are awesome m8, thanks
I did want to listen to Laurie Anderson. Your detective skills are really on point.
She's got one of the most soothing voices ever.
excelent!
If you’re taking requests, how about Archangel by Burial? Supposedly he created it in Sound Forge.
I appreciate the request. Hard to imagine creating that in Sound Forge, at least the Sound Forge I remember using back in the early 2000s.
That Ronnie Foster song is so smooth. Also used on Mystic Bounce by Madlib
This video made my day. Thank you!
If you consider Wallace Collection -Daydream as the original bass line that Isaac Hayes was inspired by for Ike’s Rap, then a few more songs fit into this family tree, Daydream in Blue by I monster, And Daydreamin by Lupe Fiasco.
Cool connections. I didn't know that the bass line was inspired by Wallace Collection.
@@KarlBoltzmann check it out. It’s just a theory I’ve seen mentioned before when talking about these songs. You might think differently.
And I almost to mention that this is another awesome video!
@@Mode-7 Thanks! I did check it out and the recording/release dates match up pretty well for the bass line to have been inspired by Wallace Collection. It's definitely a possibility as they are the same line.
It should be mentioned that the Devo sample is from the video for Jocko Homo. Same as the single version, but the 7" doesn't have the sirens. The version on the album is totally different, as it's produced by Brian Eno. (one of the best albums ever!)
Good detail. Thanks
Awesome work dude more stuff like this.. Genesis and Stress for sure are up there as faves
I’d love to see a deconstruction of Wax Tailor’s “That Good Old Tomorrow”
I generally stick with the older stuff, but I appreciate the recommendation.
awesome video, always assumed there'd be way more samples. Always thought that the drums on this were awesome. Definitely one of my fave Shadow tracks and gives goosebumps everytime, but especially the cops'n'robbers remix
The entire album is plunderphonics btw everyone here, it's all samples for about an hour of amazing songwork
So much work in service of such a shitty song.
Booo
Love this vid, love this track. Listen to it every time I'm in bad turbulence on a flight
Life on hard mode.
The intro is on beat to the song?
Nope. There is no quantization to the grid until the beat comes in.
In an interview they say where they got the horse sample
where did they get it
@@funkytime69 ua-cam.com/video/1cV09PzfvqE/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Maybe I missed it, but do they say which Western they got the horse sample from?
I love Tricky and Portishead both so much. Glory Box, and really the whole album Dummy is a Trip Hop essential album. Tricky has some fabulous tracks but is not quite as much a complete masterpiece as Dummy is. But regarding these two song? It’s like choosing a favorite child.
I agree. They're both incredible pieces of art, but Dummy is more thorough in that it is more or less flawless from start to finish.
In high school we had to write a play and I came across Wayne & Schuster via my nan. While finding the scripts online I came across this song and we sampled this across parts when we performed it. This song plays on my mind a lot over the years, thank you for the breakdown. I had assumed the instrumental was their own making and the audio was just from their radio plays. I've since found they are still making great music!
Great job, great song. Love them since 2000 🥰. Love you now, you're an archeologist and answered so many questions i had. Need a new friend ? You got me. @+++, LotP.
Example of instrument ua-cam.com/users/shorts29MpXOM3s2k?si=qpfPUmFv4R6HYd-E
Dulcimer.. I think that's how it's spelt ... played with sticks ... open string ... tap the sticks or mallets
Beautiful instrument. Thanks!
8:33 - He used an Akai Sampler (like I had an Akai S-950), in which it is possible to set te filter cut-off on a value between 00 - 99. You could program the value by midi for each midi trigger. (note on, filter value xx) So every time you play the sample, it would have another value. The filter had no effect on the sample while it was playing (because it was set on a certain value) So, he probably made steps of 20 - 40 - 60 - 80 -- 99, for each replay of the sample.
Great insight! Was it possible to do this in a more analogue way on the 950, or was this method the only way? It's funny because I really enjoy the way that he uses the digital steps of this filter in the track, but it's definitely not the way most producers would think to do it today.
@@KarlBoltzmann Well, not in the way, like with a realtime knob or something. But there was a way to make the filter follow an envelope curve, like the guy in this video shows! ua-cam.com/video/BcF6oY3W9lo/v-deo.html
@@janhinke Watching that, I am reminded just how much easier we have it these days with the UI on modern DAWS. Unreal. I wonder if they chose to do the step filter because the intro would have been too long to process it on the sampler. Norman worked with Simon Thornton who did a lot of the engineering and mixing on these records. He would probably have the answer.
Good stuff! Curious where you got your linndrum samples from? Those are some solid ones (I have download many retro machine machine libraries) but finding a good linndrum one is sort of hard haha
That's a good question. I was just looking at the samples from this track and it's all sort of a hodgepodge. I think I just picked up drum samples here and there over the years. Sorry, that doesn't really help!
Mind blown as I have a vinyl copy of that war themes album!
Rare earth is great for drums. Celebrate has like an 8 min drum solo in it
oh.. it was sampled...
Great song one my favorites
That was really cool to see you play the drum part on a kit. Great channel, just discovered and subbed. I have a request, the Avalanches -2 Hearts in 3/4 Time.
Great track! I'll look in to putting this one together. I've had to put off a few recently because of a few important samples still being unknown, so we'll see.
Did u ever Deconstruct the Number Song Cut Chemist Remix?
Nope, never did that one.
AMAZING!
Ha! Just bought the Harvey Scales & Drum Sessions albums. That Ronnie Laws was 1 of the first Jazz albums I ever bought.
Amazing Stuff & Work!
Thank you! Cheers!
