Mountain Biking / San Luis Obispo / Cuesta Grade - Bombers trail
I filmed this trail about 3 years ago. The trail isn't very long but its a fun Double Black. Like I said in the video, the hardest part of this trail is towards the end when it gets steep. Typically the last steep part has a big rut but somebody has been working on the trail. We'll see what the trail looks like after a season of rain. Happy New Year.

Mountain Bike - Employees Only to Lower Picks and Shovels - San Luis Obispo, CA - Cuesta Grade

Employees Only is a fun change when you don't feel like riding the full Picks and Shovels. It's technical with tight turns and steep areas through the trees. Trail Forks has it listed as a Black Diamond. As I state in the video, the trail ends at Picks and Shovels below the rusted truck. Employees Only can also be accessed from Moto Trail (Which is the left I tell you not to take in the video)....
Mountain Bike (MTB) San Luis Obispo, Ca - Rock Garden

It's been three years since I last filmed this trail, Rock Garden. I still love this trail. I only wish it was longer. It's still chuncky and loose. Some of my lines have changed a little bit due to a very wet winter last year that wreaked havoc on the trail. I'd like to give a shout out to all the SLO city crew, 3CMB and anyone else who keeps these trails rideable.
California Enduro Series (MTB) at Dodge Ridge - Stages 1 - 5 (Practice Day)

Dodge Ridge is a small bike park that has a lot of potential. The trail builders are doing their best with the loose dirt they have to work with. I'd compare the dirt to Mount Shasta's dirt (deep baby powder for many of the turns).

I had the most fun on this trail with its little rock drop, road gap, chunky small waterfall section, off camber section with a floating jump at the end, rutted sections and a small wodden drop off feature to finish it off. And of course to make it harder, the same deep baby powder dirt is in many of the corners.

A lot of switchbacks on this stage with rocks and roots that have to be navigated. The end of the stage is a fun fast drag strip where you can ease off of the breaks.

This was a challenging but fun Enduro race. The challenge is trying to keep up your speed with the deep loose baby powder dirt corners or the roots and rocks that are sporadically located in your lines. To compare dirt, Mount Shasta's powder dirt is like the trail River Styx at North Star Ski Resort. I do love the road gaps. The upper Stage 5 road gap was my favorite, which is in another video ...

Toro Loco is a bit more of a climb / hike a bike once you finally get to the top of 1800 but I feel it is well worth it. E-bikes have no problem getting up there but I'm not on an E-bike. Once you start down the trail at the sign that says "Valley View", remember to TURN RIGHT, which isn't that far down the trail. The trail is a narrow single track that is steep in sections with catch berms. It...

Cerro Alto Campground is located off of Hwy 41 between Atascadero, Ca and Moro Bay, Ca. The day use parking fee is $10 but if you plan on returning multiple times in a year, you can buy a year pass for $50. The climb up is a challenge, with an average grade of 20%. I believe the ascent from the main campground area to the summit is approximately 1600 ft. with a distance of approximately 2.8 mil...

Typically, this trail is very dry and loose with marble and baby head size rocks all the way down. It's been a couple years since I videoed this trail. Still chunky with loose marble and baby head size rocks. Some chunky spots seamed to have gotten a little bigger than last time I rode it. The climb out, once on Powerline Rd., sucks; unless you're an e-biker.

It's been 2 years since I filmed this trail but this time I filmed a complete top to bottom run. The single track is narrow, fun and flowy. Once on the fire road, it's kind of boring so relax, rest the legs and enjoy the scenery.
Mountain Bike (MTB) China Peak - CES Stage 5 - Stones, Marty's, Short Cut, Burnout
Переглядів 504Рік тому
Stones is a double black diamond and it's the hardest trail at this bike park. I crashed and I possibly cracked a rib or the cartilage between the ribs. I was wearing full face helmet and full upper body armor, which I recommend. Luckily I wasn't in too much pain and was able to finish the trail.

Are you ever looking for people to ride with? Lived here for about a year now and always looking to ride with folks.
@@lancevalenzuela3358 sure. What days do you typically ride.
@@oldguymtb780 I typically ride Sundays, but will be skipping this upcoming Sunday. I also do night rides after work and will be able to do more rides some Thursday-Saturday. Typically ride Madonna and Irish, but that is because I live close to them. Wanting to ride more of the grade, MDO, and everything else the area has to offer.
@ I’ll probably ride the grade this coming Thursday (Jan9th) or Saturday (Jan 11th). Which day would you want to meet. I park at the end of Stenner Creek Rd. Rides are about 14 - 16 miles with 3500’ of climbing.
@@oldguymtb780 Lets shoot for saturday, and I have no problem with climbing. I'm familiar with the parking area, do you park closer to the CalPoly meats or at the end of the road by the closed gate?
@ the end of the road. Do you have a Strava account. My name is Mark Baker My Strava pic is of me in a black jersey with a blue sleeve jumping a gap.
After moving to the area almost 2 years ago, I finally got to hike Cerro Alto today. I always like to hike trails first I haven't ridden yet to make sure I don't catch myself out of my league. It's a really beautiful area and look forward to riding my MTB there sometime soon. Quick question, where does the Star Wars trail start and end? I can't seem to find it on any maps. Thanks for the vid!
@@LanceLaspina Sorry, I should have explained in the video that Star Wars trail is a local name. The actual name on Trail Forks is Canyon trail. What time did you hike it because I did 2 laps to top today.
@ ok great! That makes sense to me now. Appreciate the clarification. I started my hike at 9 am and finished around 10:30 am. I only saw a few hikers (no bikers) and most of them were way up top at the summit.
Straight to the point . That was a dope lil section. I gotta do before winter is up.💯👍
Double black? C'mon! There are WAY harder trails, just in SLO County.
@@LoamReaper that what it’s listed as on Trail Forks. Somebody cleaned up the last steep part. I don’t believe the line I took was an option before. It use to be just a nasty rut. And yes FuFu and Face trail are definitely harder but they’re not shown on Trail Forks. Not sure why.
Short, but sweeeeet!
Wow you are hauling ass down those trails! I can't imagine ever riding them that fast
Sweet, a new way in to Picks. I gotta do that one next time I'm up there. Not that fast though! 😂
Nice lines 🤘
Are e-bikes allowed on this trail?
I'm not 100% sure but I believe e-bikes are allowed. My buddy and I were visiting his friend in Coeur d'Alene so we aren't familiar with the trails. But my buddy was riding an e-bike and nobody said anything to him and the guy who brought us to the trails didn't say anything about e-bikes being illegal there. Google a local bike shop there and call. They would know.
This looks super fun! Great video!
i live in a town i have been looking for these trails
@@jigginjaxson I don’t believe anyone is maintaining these trails anymore. Not sure if it was a land owner reason. They’re probably overgrown now after 2yrs.
@@oldguymtb780 give me a riddle on where this is
Great vid and riding, you go down those trails way faster than I do. But please make sure to replace the chain on the gate, it sits in a notch to hold the gate closed and so cows don't open it!!
Would it have too hard for you put the chain back on the gate?
@@emrhomeworks9979 sign says keep gate closed, not locked. That gate has never been locked for all the times I’ve ridden it. I believe the chain is for the left side. The people gate has a spring so it shuts by itself, which I made sure it did by hearing it hit as it closed. But of course I could have mistaken the land owners intent.
@@oldguymtb780 The rule of thumb when going through a gate is to always leave it as you found it. If it's open leave it open, if it's closed re-close it, if it's locked re-lock it. Years ago someone (never found out who) closed but didn't re-lock a gate in Poly Canyon and a couple of cows got out and wound up on the train tracks. Mountain bikers came pretty close to losing access to that area. There were a couple of years back in the late 90s where we did get banned from that section of trail on Madonna because of a similar situation. I've watched a bunch of your videos and you're obviously a responsible trail user so I'm not trying to give you any shit, but it's good practice to leave it as you found it.
@@oldguymtb780 Yeah, having a chain securing the gate is not the same as locking the gate and as you said the gate is spring loaded and live stock are more than capable of opening a spring loaded gate, hence the securing chain.
@@oldguymtb780 PS, cool trail
We rode RG last weekend. Hadn't rolled it in a year or two. Definitely roughed up compared to my last pass through (makes it even better!) . The resurfaced paths were nice for the grind up. We could have used the improved traction you had there in the video, too. Is that a new bike I see there?
Warranty frame. The carbon cup portion of the frame that holds the headset bearings broke on my white Enduro frame. Specialized warrantied it with an S-Works frame. I'm not sure if they had a surplus of S-Works frames or if the headset issue is less apt to happen on an S-Works frame. Either way I'm happy.
I finally did this ride recently. Talk about flow city?! I dropped in on the Old Oats Peak trail for some roughness. That was short but fun, then Bebee after that was crazy flowy. Heading back up there in a few days.
@@Michael-h6g yeah it’s a fun place to ride. Glad you liked it. One place you can usually ride after it rains too.
@@Michael-h6g if your looking for more tech trails, ride the quests grade behind cal poly. That’s where Firebreak, pick and shovels and Morning Glory trails are located. I have videos on these trails. I’m usually available if you want to ride. Just give me a few days notice.
@@oldguymtb780 I've ridden P & S so I know what it's like up there and I most certainly will return. IMO, the best riding in SLO Town is the Ocean View Trail in IH. The weaving in and out of and up and over planted rocks is my kind of thing.
Holy crap! I didn't think that portion of Stadium was even possible to ride down on a MTB
It's definitely a spicy DH. I rode it again last week. Had to take a different line towards the bottom but rideable.
I remember that dusty hell hole! Good run! You got that sand pit down.
Thanks. That place hasn’t changed. Still crappy dirt but it makes it challenging
Been a minute since you posted a vid. Looks fun.
Yeah, been training for the race season. P1 at this race in my Category.
Thanks for the memories! I used to frequently ride Madonna Mt about 35 years ago. Rock Garden is about what I remember. Only we weren't going nearly as fast, riding full rigid at the time, cuz that's really all there was. At least half the time we'd just bomb back down the road.
I do remember the days of riding fully rigid bikes. Loved the challenge.
Have you ever been to Mt Pinos?
No. Where is it located?
@@oldguymtb780 Along the 5 freeway in between L.A. and Bakersfield. Highest point in Los Padres National Forest. Get off at Frazier Park.
How did you get up there for your run?
Parked at the campground entrance off of Hwy 41 between Morro Bay and Atascadero. Road the road to the bridge trail. Up Bridge trail to Cerro alto summit trail. I have to hike a bike on some spots to get to the top. There’s a map of the trails at the entrance and on Trail Forks app.
@@oldguymtb780 So you are taking your bike back up to get to your car?
The trails start from the campground paved road. Boy Scout trailhead is at the entrance to the campground and there is a day use parking area right there. It is the hardest climb to the summit though. That’s why most mountain bikers take Bridge trail up to start. Bridge trail head is about .7 mile drive into the campground, which is very close to the end of the campground. There is a parking area at the end of the campground for day use. There is a $10 day use fee that can be payed at the iron ranger.
@@oldguymtb780 Quick question. They happen to have bikes on sale at REI and I know next to nothing about them. Is the Co-op DRT 1.3 a good deal? Or is the Roscoe 6 a better bike? Heads the Roscoe now uses the same frame for All models. Idk about the Co-op frame. Has a weird shape.
Sorry, I know nothing about those bikes.
What exactly does old mean? I'm thinking of getting into mountain biking bc walking hurts me too much lol. So trying to see if I can still start.
I’m 55 yrs old. If you have pain like a 64 yr old riding buddy of mine you might want to demo an e-bike before buying anything. That’s what he rides as it helps him lessen pain and he gets his workout.
You going by yourself?
I was riding with a buddy that day. He usually hanging back as it sometimes gets a little dusty.
Beautiful video quality, looks like a great trail :D
Another nice speed run. Are you using a chest mount or a chin mount?
Thank you. It’s a fun DH but the climb is tough. I’m using a Chin mount.
Hey old guy I’m moving down there tomorrow. If you drag this old guy around those trails there’s a couple beers in it for you.
WOW sorry tomorrow is a bad day. Also, with all the rain you’re limited on the trails. If you are riding tomorrow Montaña De Oro is your best bet (Hazard Peak trail, Manzanita, Barranca and Oats Peak). If you want harder tails, Cerro Alto (between Moro Bay and atascadero) is good right after a rain. Bridge trail is the easiest way up. All of the climb is steep (Average grade 20%) but it’s a fun DH. Sorry again that I can’t make it.
Once it dries up we can definitely hit some of the local trails.
What days are you available to ride?
China peak was so much fun to race!
Yeah I really like that race. The new stage 6 was a little flat but at least it sent us through Gnarly again.
AWESOME! Clearly there has been some work done on it (launch ramps) since I made my pass through last year. Looks like the rain smoothed out a bunch of it.
Dang, you're scary fast! I have family in SLO town so I'm up there a few times a year and I always bring my bike. I learned a bunch about West Cuesta Grade rides from your vids, so thanks for that. I haven't seen any videos from you of the newer stuff in Irish Hills like Ocean View/Wednesday/Chutes & ladders...?
I don’t ride Irish Hills very often but I’ve been meaning to video Ocean View.
Yeah the place doesn't have extended DH. I'm more of a slow tech rider. I like to climb chunky/techy stuff like Ocean View Trail (on the Johnson Ranch side) has. It would be fun to watch you blast down that stuff though. @@oldguymtb780
I'll definitely video Ocean view. I'll probably video both sides of the trail's DH's separately when spring comes. @@Michael-h6g
Great vid! I am a hiker and ex mountain biker so have been in both worlds on parts of that trail. I was just there hiking with three friends a few days ago. One concern - In many places, it is a narrow, steep trail with no way to quickly step out of the way of a biker. Also, I noticed some severe damage due to biking on the Harper Canyon portion of the trail. The mountain biking community used to regularly repair and maintain the trail. Do you know if that's still a part of the local mountain biking group, or if there is still a group at all that meets? I wish I could remember the name from many years ago.
Sorry, no I don’t know who works on the trail.
Solid run! (Except the biff...LOL). lived out there for years and never heard of that trail. WTH???
Yeah that dam loose dirt got me. Next time you’re in the area, take a right instead of a left (Pipeline). I did two laps up to 1800. Marks canyon first and then Pipeline. Roughly 3200 ft of climbing but so worth it.
@@oldguymtb780 Sweet. Done pipeline and the climb many times, bib never that trail. Planning on April, maybe stay a month or so.
How do you get to center creek rd?
Stenner Creek Rd is off of HWY 1. Drive north on hwy 1 out of San Luis Obispo. After passing Highland drive (stop light that goes to Cal Poly) it will be the next right. It’s a small road. You can look it up on google maps. Stenner Creek Rd turns into a dirt road. Keep following the dirt road until you get to the parking area at the gate.
Have you met the man who created pipeline?
No but He did a great job. So much fun and flow.

Damn, you make Private Idaho look easy. But it isnt. Rancheria looks super fun but it wasnt open yet when i went to china peak
Thanks, those trails linked up is my favorite top to bottom DH there.
Planning to come out to Sunrise in a week. Do you think a trail bike 120/130mm would do or should I rent a mid-travel 140/150mm travel bike?
Personally I’d go with the larger travel bike if your going to ride the gnar but I’ve seen people shred with less. It really depends on you and how you ride. The park has various levels of terrain.
@@oldguymtb780 bra just rode today with a XC hardtail 100 ml travel, my legs were bleeding halfway through a ble trail forgot the name lets see tomorrow how it goes.

Sorry about the thumb. I cant believe people can go down that last section (where you wrecked) on a single crown fork. Haven't been there since 2007 on a V10 with a 888 fork and it handed me my ass.
Thanks. That same race is coming up in August. I’ll be on it again.
