Dude... excellent
I know I am in the super-minority, but I am one of the few that think this went down extremely poorly. At no point did Laura ever say that Jester was using a magic seasoning on a perishable pastry in preparation for just such an event. If she did it in the moment, there should have been a slight of hand check or something. To this day, that Matt didn't roll perception after the fact in response to Laura's after the fact announcement of adding the dust, i can only think he was getting tired of the party individually threatening the hag, and this was the out he needed to change scenes, so he rolled with it. It still remains a blatant example of a player trying to "get one over" on the DM in my eyes, and there has never been a discussion since of how she had prepared for such a use all along. It is up there with players announcing after the fact the level of their counterspell to match the level of the bbeg's spell to counter it more easily and other such meta shennanigans.
Except he was eating it up the whole time and was not trying to rush anything along. He was genuinely proud of Laura for finding a way around the deal, he rolled to see if it worked and the dice decided that it did. If he didn't like how she did it, he would have corrected her on it which he has done countless times elsewhere. But Matt rewards his players for out of the box thinking and even if the thing doesn't quite meet the requirements of the rules as written, he works by sometimes letting the rule of cool win out. It was a brilliant idea on her part, he considered it and let it stand, allowing the dice to determine the outcome and it worked in her favor.
I don't care for Crititcal Roll, but this moment was peak DnD. When the bard makes a deal, and says "Let's go!" Do not question, don't stop, get away, get far far away. I am going to include this hag to fuck with my players tho.
Fantastic work really! Only notes: no sleeves for evantica and nott should be uglier more goblin faced. I can’t truly excellent piece
The lighting!!!! The framing!!!!! Oh my god!!!!!!!
"He's called the traveller, he's a really powerful god. I bet he's here right now looking over me" ... The trickster god was definitely with her that day.
Я так люблю этот аниматик❤❤❤❤
Good video. I liked it a lot!
Not pictured Talisen Jaffey losing it in the chorus.
Oh good, I was thinking it was about time to binge CR animatics
Lets all take a real sad moment and be sad that the 2024 trickery cleric wont have modifiy memory any more as a known spell !
Why does jester’s accent change every 30 secs
Jester: "Did she fail here save?" Good DM: "Jup..." Bad DM: "She did but she'll use legendary resistance to succeed. Roll initiative."
Just recently watched the interview of Matt where he discusses a little bit about what was originally planned for this encounter. So true to D&D that a player finds a way to short circuit your plans. Truly epic.
I haven't seen this which interview is it?
I can never get over how devastatingly well-calculated this was. Laura had however many episodes of building up Jester's personality so that she would be underestimated until just the right moment to make it count, she sat on the Dust of Deliciousness for MONTHS in the expectation that one day she would get to use it to its fullest effect, she played the role here out and even lured Matt - who is fully aware of how smart all his players are in their own ways - into thinking that the hag was going to win this one, and then she executed her master stroke so fluidly that nobody saw it coming until Isharnai was already in checkmate. And I fully agree with other people, Isharnai did probably figure out she'd been tricked later on but let it slide because it's not every day a hag - a predatory trickster by its very nature - gets tricked in turn, especially this smoothly.
This is the one scene I can't wait for in the animated series
Yeah this scene is gonna be nuts
The animation is the Veth and Avantika bit is so good!!!
I can’t wait to see this moment animated
CANT WAIT TO SEE THIS ANIMATED HOLY SHIT
Most legendary moment.
I'll be so devastated if this scene isn't in the animated series
If it runs long enough it will be but not in season 1
This is what I want from critical role animated
Absolutely amazing 🤩
CALEB LOOKED SO GOOD IN EVERY FRAME OF THIS
I have to say, I have never seen a better DnD fight depiction in animation before. The background description of the fight just adds to it. Great job. Can't wait what they do in the TV show. Hope it's at least this good ;)
As someone who came into this knowing NOTHING about this scene or the context behind it, this was hilarious on so many levels
Who else remembers the cliffhanger? 😅
Goddamn, that’s a beautiful misty step. Hats off, my friend.
Now this is an abridged fight.
I'm curious, did this ever come back to bite them or does did the Hag never retaliate as it really kept believing she had an amazing time with Jester?
Quoting the wiki, referencing the post-campaign wrap-up: "Matthew Mercer imagines Isharnai, who is no longer under the effects of Modify Memory, has some respect for having been outmaneuvered, but will cross paths with Jester Lavorre again."
That was bloody smooth.
What a masterpiece
This whole video rocks, but I *love* Nott/Veth’s scuffle with Avantika. The motion of the stabs, dodges, and the follow up slash look so nice
FUCK THATS SICK
I am a Vox Machina Stan. I was having a really hard time getting into the mighty Nein. This was the combat that sold me
The Traveler surely grinned when she pulled this one off.
Amazing storyboarding! great shape language and framing!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
This was an excellent artistic representation of a hag and their deals. I never listened to critical role before I think I might now
I love how you layered the audio on top of each other to really sell the feeling of urgency and desperation. This whole fight was intense! And you’ve conveyed it perfectly. Truly amazing!
I like how jester proves that trickster clerics aren’t really any worse than any other cleric subclass if you play them right
HOLY HECK THIS IS AMAZING!! The sound design is amazing as is the art and the scene transitions! beautiful
Been binge watching Campaign 2 for 2 months or so now and got to that episode 3 weeks ago. I'm so happy this appeared today because I've been waiting to watch this for so long
Saw this episode for the first time last week and it is the best thing, you captured it perfectly
Easily the best moment in the whole of CR
Truly the stuff a legendary trickster is meant for.
Wow this was AMAZING
Underrated bit at 7:49
Amazing sound design
Amazing, with all the little details! My favorite is Jesters pirate disguise self with the heart eye patch. She'd do just that, awesome!
