Taking a stroll in the ram pasture on September 28
The picture that I choose is from September 2020. This is how the pasture started out after it was row crop/vegetable garden for many years. I seeded the pasture in spring 2020. This area is our ram pasture when we don’t have the flerd together. Where we bale graze and fed hay makes a big difference on the forage quality and quantity too. I can’t wait for the rest of the farm to look like this. I looked backed where we first started, and you wouldn’t even recognize the area besides where the pasture was super short in the video. It always been really hard to grow any forage up there, but I’m hoping to change it.

Our strong electric fencer was out of commission so we had to put the rams inside the cattle panels because they wanted to see the ewes. We have been rotational grazing this pasture since 2020.

Will be turning this into a perennial pasture this fall or next spring.

This area has been cover crops since fall 2021. Most of the cover crops has been reseeding itself less every year. It’s to the point where it is time to plant perennial pasture in it. I did plant red clover in here when I planted the cover crops, and that has been really established itself though.

According to research, by allowing the plants to form seed they produce a lot of root exudates of the type that creates humus. Humus can last for decades as opposed to soil organic matter from plant residues which may last only a few years. It will be interesting if you experience improved plant performance in this area in the future.

I was planting into standing cereal rye and very little of hairy vetch that was going to be pasture last year but instead it got postponed a year. So I planted this cover crop last week of August and it was a mix of oats, spring and winter peas, buckwheat, crimson clover, hairy vetch. I should take a walk through it with a video now. I’m going to put fence up this year and hopefully graze it. Thanks for watching.

Love the 450. I had one I used on a Curl potato harvester. I picked up onions with it back in the 90s. Sold it to an upstart vineyard in California.
