In Hindu Law, Joint Hindu Family is a social and legal entity and they are presumed to be joined and united. Under Hindu law, the joint hindu family operates on the basis of coparceners and the senior most male member of the joint hindu family is known as Karta. Though, after the amendment of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, women are also considered as the Karta and accordingly with the enactment of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, daughters of the joint hindu family are also regarded as coparceners. Most of the law students gets confused joint hindu family with hindu undivided family (HUF) and use it synonymously, but both are used in two difference context. The HUF is used only in reference to taxation law i.e. Income Tax Act, 1961.
