Back then the men would look and smile at me Like boys applying for a summer job. But no, I never would respond, The vacancy was taken. Back home my love would whisper in my ear Those words, a shelter for a troubled soul. That voice, like sunshine when you're cold, Like water when you're thirsty. And then one morning he was gone. A day went by and he was gone. A month went by and I would stand by the window Holding the baby, shaking with fear. And one day I heard it, as real as the sun, That voice in my ear. That's when I realized that he was invisible Like a magic trick, like a miracle. I don't know how he did it. He was gone, but he still was there, But totally invisible, But don't get me wrong he was tangible. But invisible like gravity or the air. They said I had to take a little rest Someplace where they could keep and eye on me. Despite the bars across the windows My room was pretty sunny. Those days were mumbles in a sleeping ear. The hallways always smelled like chicken soup. Most of the doctors were polite. The nuns were nice and nunny. You eat your lunch a year is gone. You go to bed ten years are gone. Then you wake up and wonder where is it hiding? Where did it go? I don't understand. The life I had wanted, the life I was promised, The life I had planned. Then I realized it was invisible. That entire life was invisible Because somebody misplaced it, So it had to be somewhere. Just out of reach, just out of sight There's a couple dancing in candlelight. No gravity was spinning in the air. Though things are pretty much the same As how they used to be, The young men still are smiling, They just never smile at me. At first I thought they must be blind Like love or gravity. But then I realized I picked it up. I've got the gift! I feel like supergirl! I've become invisible. I'm a magic trick. Isn't it wonderful? Like a character in a comic book I can see what you're thinking but I don't care. So if your on an empty street And you hear the tapping of high heeled feet, Or you hear a heart like a phantom beat, Or the screams of a woman left incomplete, Well don't fear what you can't see. The odds are good that it's only me. I'm invisible. I've vanished in thin... Ta-daa!

Love this song so much. Part of it is this amazing actor. But don't overlook the lyric, how so many elements are transformed and re-interpreted from verse to verse. And to think it comes from the guy who wrote the Carmen Sandiego song!

Not sure why this show is so underrated and disliked. The music and lyrics are truly something else. You couldn’t find a show written like this these days with broadway making room for shows like Be More Chill and Spongebob. Wish this had more appreciation!!!

Devin Dean Well, technically, Broadway IS making room for shows like Hamilton, Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812(in spite of it’s lack of deserved Tony’s and a sadly quick closing afterwards), The Book of Mormon(even though it’s been running for a while; actually, it’s been on since the year this show premiered.), Dear Evan Hansen, and even David Yazbek’s(the same composer and lyricist of this song and show) newest project, The Band’s Visit(which 1. Swept the Tony’s this year(Also earning David some Tony’s of his own, FINALLY!) and 2. I, myself, flew to New York with my family to see, a few weeks ago!)! Those are all shows I feel hold as much of an artistic merit and serious sense of theatricality as this show does. Plus, on a related note, while in New York, I saw that the Marque Theater will be premiering David Yazbek’s next project, “Tootsie”(based on the film of the same name), in March 2019! But I do see what you mean about the more “commercial” venues, like Frozen the Musical, Mean Girls(to an extent), and soon(believe it or not), King Kong the musical I’d imagine, but we’ll see what that’s like(if the score and book holds up as much as the giant Kong puppet that is). God knows how often I’d pray that the theaters still housing Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Beautiful: The Carol King Musical, and Kinky Boots, at least close those shows for a LITTLE bit, to allow new works to shown at those types of venues(especially the theatre housing Beautiful, since it’s named after my favorite composer/lyricist, Stephen Sondheim!). All in all, though, It’s all a balance for Broadway itself really, sadly but truly, between the business and the art and what factor gets more attention than the other in regards of quality of the piece and the quantity of buts and dollars the theatres themselves are getting to stay alive. But look on the bright, and alternatively, if not evenly, dark side: Spongebob the Musical is now closed, because The Palace Theatre will be having renovations that will go on till 2021. So, yeah, a bit of a double edge sword there.............😐 I do agree, though, that this show, as well as Great Comet of 1812, deserve more recognition and a second chance on Broadway too. P.S. (WARNING: Unpopular opinion to some, if not most on this comment section); I hear that Kinky Boots will be closing on April 7, 2019! Hooray!!! 🤗🤗🤗👏👏👏👏👏😅😅😅

@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 Can I just say for a second, how THANKFUL I am that there is someone out there (you) besides myself and few friends who hold similar views on Broadway and theatre in general. I don't mean to come off as attacking the shows I mentioned, it just genuinely pains me to see shows like Woman on the Verge receive zero attention but shows like Be More Chill and Spongebob, for example, do. I'm glad you point out Great Comet! One of my top 5 favorites of all time. Such a beautifully crafted and unconventional show on multiple levels! I pray every night that I get to see a revival one day! That is another example of what I wish we saw more of. Music and lyrics that are provoking and sound complex; something we don't see too often. Now, I 100% have my guilty pleasure musicals, and I truly believe there is something great in EVERY musical. I just feel like some musicals lack a certain quality, which people seem to not care about anyway. I am familiar with The Band's Visit, and I am eager to see that as well. I can only get into a few songs on the album, but I'm assuming most of the album is better seen and heard live. I actually really like a lot of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, written by Yazbek as well. I really am a big fan of his sound, so I'm looking forward to Tootsie! One thing I'm gonna have to disagree with you on though is my hopes that Wicked doesn't close any time soon! I know, its basic, but I love Wicked, I've seen it 3 times, I know all the words, I get goosebumps every time I see it. Also, one of the first shows I've seen, so there's a little emotional attachment there! But I hear ya on Beautiful. I think we're all surprised that's still around! Especially since it's not even in the Theatre District. Now, just by the sounds of it, it seems like we have a similar taste in musicals. Have you listened to War Paint? A really great show that didn't get enough recognition at the 2017 Tonys either. Another LuPone show with a really awesome sound, very different than most new musicals. And, it wasn't based on a movie! Can you imagine that? Also, I recommend A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, if you haven't listened already. Have you listened to Ghost Quartet? Parade? I could go on haha! Those are just a few of my favorites that seem to never get brought up! Anyway, I appreciate your reply. Let me know what your opinion is on those musicals I recommended!

The issue; I think is that it was so over cast with stars that they each had their numbers and the basic plot lost out.
