A scrappy fighter from Jersey City named Tommy Shea -- "born in a dump, educated in an alley" -- catches the eye of wealthy businessman, Robert Mallinson, who allows him to train at his Long Island estate. Shea soon falls for Mallinson's daughter, Dorothy, but fears he doesn't have the money to support her in proper style. To get this money, Shea decides to work with crooked fight-promoter Harry Cram, even though this means dropping his honest manager, Dave Bernstein. The film follows the staff of the Army weekly magazine Yank, who are among the first American troops in Tokyo after Japan's surrender. They are given the difficult task of producing an issue of the magazine in three days. Short on ideas and having to meet the deadline, they enter Japan's black market and come across con artist Joe Butterfly. Butterfly shows them the high life, letting them live...

Good to see him playing this part. So, convincing.
Unfortunately, I can't watch the movie due to poor resolution.
Started watching this but quit. I couldn't deal with Audie Murphy being in such a silly movie. Not saying he was bad just that I couldn't get my head around the concept.
Audie was one of the greatest men that ever lived, we're so fortunate he went into the movies after the war, and although many only knew him as the original Penguin, Burgess Merridith (Joe Butterfly) was one of Hollywood's busiest actors.

I saw at X a tribute to him, didn't know anything about him, and lead me to searched and found this film..I become a fan today..What a magnificent soldier.Rest In Peace.

One of his first movies, "The Red Badge Of Courage", proved Audie's acting chops. Stylistically, the movie was a trend setter in film history. I recommend it highly.
This film must have been a high point for a medal of honer winner.

68 years for me. I’ve been to Audie Murphy Day in Greenville TX 3 times ,to his grave at Arlington on his birthday and witnessed the wreath laying ceremony. I love this movie but my favorite is TO Hell and Back.

10-9-2022. Humm, there is zero amount of butter in the insect "butterfly". But the insect does 'flutter'. So, I chose to say the insect as a (flutterfly).
I have a copy of this. It's great! Took a bit to actually get on line with Joe. Can't get the Penguin out of my head when it comes Burgess Meredith. Audie, as usual, did a fine job!

Saw this movie a year or so ago, and just watched it again. I've always like Audie Murphy, and he was great in this comedy movie. Wish he'd done more of them. I've always liked Burgess Meredith too, and he was very entertaining in this movie. I also liked seeing all the other familiar faces in this movie. It's so much better than most of the movies made today.
You never thought onion-stuffed olives could get a man in trouble, but they did.
Audie murphy he made westerns they had him with Eddie albert fun runners team him with Barbara rush among others had him in comedy's but didn't know what to do with him his last movie was 1969 two years before he died I wonder if his acting career was over if so hollywood was very stupid.

*Audie Murphy (1925 - 1971) - THE most decorated U.S. solider in WWII...!* He rose from the rank of private to officer with multiple battlefield promotions and was awarded the Medal of Honor 2 weeks before his 20th birthday! His steely inner confidence was forged in the crucible of war! His soft Texas drawl and natural acting ability helped propel him to movie stardom - thanks to the great actor James Cagney who launched his movie career after seeing Audie's picture on the front cover of Life magazine! Audie Murphy was one of the best western actors in the 1950's but he played other roles as well. After the start of the Korean War in 1950, Murphy began a second military career and was commissioned a captain in the 36th Infantry Division. He wanted to join the fighting but the 36th was never sent overseas. He retired a major. Also not very well known is that after he tragically died in a plane crash at age 46, his wife Pamela devoted the rest of her life to helping veterans in a California VA hospital until her death 2010.

It is not war movie
Audie did a good job fighting. The female should have told him right off: I, YOU, don't need money to be happy. So the plot was a bit off there....still....Audie, Audie, Audie.
Audie Murphy has been one of my favorites. He had it rough from day one. A real hero in my book. I've enjoyed his westerns for a long time, this is one of the few non westerns. He is great across the board. RIP Audie

As Trent Tuttle mentioned, Audie played a Welterweight & did it well in this movie! Who knew? Love his cowboy movies, the Whispering Smith series, but nice to see a change of pace. And, um, Sweet to see his hair all messed up in the fight scenes..😉..Wow, I’m a sucker for that 50’s bad boy look! 😊. Thrilled I happened onto this movie...Thanks!
