Comic book talk and process videos as I work on my own artwork. Usually episodes are broken up into 2 sections with the first half talking about comic books that I love and get inspiration from and the next half about actually drawing something!

Comix Rant MINI ep 6 - Shin-ichi Sakamoto's #DRCL volume 1
Yes, this artwork is incredible. I purchased the first book and was captivated from the start however, I’m not crazy for the characterization. After watching your video, I’m definitely going to reread this first book and perhaps carry on with the series. Innocent won me over a lot more and I plan to continue with that series. Carson from living the line thinks the climber is his best work. I hope the climber gets an English release. I should check my local library to see what they are currently carrying for comics and manga. Thanks for the video.!
Oh thanks for watching! I can see how the characterization could turn people away. Mina and the cast do seem to fit into this... mainstream manga type of people now that I think about it. She does have this "I can do it and believe in myself" type of attitude and the others are pure jerk boy bully types (that will be her friends later). But I think there might be a chance Sakamoto is playing those up to flip them around later? I will have to check out that climber book for sure! Thank you for the recommendation (and yes Innocent is totally deep in terms of characterization!). Hit up your local library, I am always in awe to see what each one carries!
Zero Hour to me Destroyed to many DC hero’s when they wash away there past😢
@@jennifertripp6702 I hated the aging of the JSA
@@Arnsteel634 I always liked that DC was able to connect the JSA and the JLA and give the JSA it's own unique approach w the super hero heritage. They always seemed to mess with the JSA though (like the ageing thing). Looks like DC is starting to bring them back (yet again)? I am glad to see Infinity Inc will be apart of that new JSA book too...
Dear god has it been that long
@@Arnsteel634 it has! It was a little scary when it sunk in... gulp!
How about Comicon it started back in 1964 by two teens Bernie Bubnis and Ron Frandkin
A great listen. Amazing what that Filipino humidity did to the covers and binding.
@@jonanjello Thank you! It is crazy how brutal the weather is there to paper. Even the comic bags I have are slowly yellowing and I think proving to be more detrimental because they're just so old now. Glad my mom hasn't thrown them all away!
Nice one! Love this series to Death! (jr) It's nice to have some professional insight on the series and comics. I had no idea that was THE Jeff Matsuda.
Haha I like the pun! But yes Im glad you enjoyed it. I should really try to do more of these w my videogame projects. My memory is absolutely terrible, so it's been good going through some of the old stuff I still have to remember...
The production quality is outstanding. The colors are fantastic!
It's so great. I didn't even talk about the paper quality, but it reproduces the colors very nicely. I'm sure it's not as bright as when she does it digital, but it totally works!
FANTASTIC COMIC!!! 🌟✨️🏆✏️✒️🖌🎨💯👍 CAGLE is a master!
@@StevenKrueger RIGHT?!! He's so good! I dont know how he can draw at such a high bar all the time!

New subscriber. I'm interviewing Derek on my channel this evening so I'm refreshing my memory with your videos. 🤣
Welcome and thanks for subscribing! I hope this helped you brush up! I will check out the interview!
@@comixrant it definitely did help! Thank you!
New episode!
I'm trying! But It's about to slow down a bit for the summer. I will try to update it, but it might not be in the same capacity...
I love seeing well-loved comic books! Awesome video.
I will have to track down the omnibus just so I can read it again, but I really have so many memories attached and released as I flip through the pages!
Amen on the art, brother! It's got to grab me with the art.
Right? My eyeballs need to be visually entertained!
I got this in a trade, and enjoyed it a lot. My local still has a set available in single issues, it is winking at me.
Oh man. I gotta get on that trade! The singles might not be a bad idea either! I do like being able to really see two page spreads or full-bleed pages in their native "floppy" format. I just saw this googling it up: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/759715/the-ambassadors-library-edition-by-written-by-mark-millar-illustrated-by-frank-quitely-olivier-coipel-travis-charest-and-karl-kershl/ Drooool...
Yo!!! Travis!
Right?! SO GOOD!!
I love this video! My feelings about this series and his work in general feels very reciprocated when watching this. I gush over his works starting from "The Climber" and so forth. His manga previous to that weren't as passionate and he himself shared that sentiment. I don't know the extent of your knowledge for Shinichi Sakamoto's work, but he values the reader's imagination and their ability to relate to imagery; hence the absence of onomatopoeia and using visuals to describe things like sounds, smells, feelings, etc. So a lot of the story isn't just said through text. If you wish to know more about who he is as a mangaka, there are two youtube videos about him. One is Naoki Urasawa's Manben and the other one is by archipel. I hope you dive into his works and continue to enjoy his stuff. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Oh! Yes! Thanks for the heads up on those videos! I will definitely check them out! (Urasawa is another super fave of mine, and I really should do an episode to gush over his stuff.) I honestly don't know alot about Sakamoto until just recently when #DRCL has blowing up my instagram feed. I read a few chapters of his "Innocence" (also a crazy intense book!), but I will have to track down his other work! Interesting that he has that view over his early work! As an older artist myself I can relate to what he means, but I also know that I couldn't have 'arrived' to where I am now if not for all the missteps and yeah even 'passion-less' beginnings. Thanks for watching the video and I'm glad to meet a fellow fan!
instagram.com/p/DCLzVbRSQh-/?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA== Its translated!! 🎉🎉🎉
ohh awesome! thanks for the great story!
I'm am QUITE sure you must have all sorts of stories yourself! Thanks for listening to my ramblings, man!

1 simple suggestion write a rough script or some bullet points which will help you to speak without aaaa.. hmm.. don't mind 😀
Noted! Thank you!
Comix Rant is back! I care about your channel, hater! 😉
Thank you as always, sir!
PLOP! Was one of my favorite weird comic books from my childhood. I only had a few issues but I loved them so much ❤️❤️❤️ Now that I’m in my 50s I have a complete collection to read and enjoy. Thank you for talking about this odd ball comic book from the 70s
Oh no way! Wow! I have only ever encountered the title in this single issue, but it was so good! Glad you got the whole collection! There's quite a few titles from my childhood that I wished they'd collect, but never do. So me gabbing about it on my channel is my way of trying to share these back to everyone. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. What's the best issue of the Plop! comic for you?
Oh wow, that’s a tough question 😅 PLOP! #24 holds a special place in my heart because I boulot it when I was 9 years old 😊 and read it from cover to cover on a long car ride. My favorite issue might be #18 because it has the creepy story about the elves and the shoemaker 😅 I loved that story when I was a kid 😉
@@steventurner6902 I will definitely have to try to track these down! I did a quick scan of the issues online and I didn't realize it's quite an awesome collection of writers and artists throughout the series! Those Basil Wolverton covers are NUTS.
I LOVE SEEING THIS! 30 years of fellowship, brother. Much love!
Only well deserved praise for the book sir! Also, I kept typing in crypt "KEEPER" instead of "WALKER" for some reason, but that has been fixed now! Doh.
Your art is genuinely so nice. Trust people still say “trip”. I actually find it very interesting that your revisiting your old story. You’ve also convinced me to read human target
Thank you for the kind words! It is fun to revisit myself after all these years. A trip down memory lane. Yes, check Human Target out, solid Tom King Pulp Noir story.
The intro is so trippy. So are the human target covers
I’m so excited to look at danger street
I think the way you pick up and read Thomas is such a chill vibe. I’m noticing I like to pick up books a lot for the art as well and the characters that I like and if I see a rider that does something interesting at least in my perspective.
Thanks! I'm glad you like the intro! I was laid off at the start of the pandemic and decided to animate my own characters for a change! I'm all employed again, but I did enjoy working on those. Also the Human Target covers are so great! I enjoy the story and art inside as well, but it's like the full package with the great cover art.
@@johnmobley9369 Yes. That's kind of how I browse through the comic book store. I really like finding things this way. I read stuff digitally and track artists down on social media, but I think I find more new art or stories easier this way.
Nice!
Thank you, sir! I peek into some of your Nosfero vids! Looking good! The finish line is right there!
This broke my heart because I really wanted henry cavill back as Superman
Me too! He was great! I was still holding on for a long time, but the official announcements and Gunn essentially rebooting the DCEU to fit him more make it feel very final.
@@comixrant same here as well
This is really cool, love the new series idea! Now I want to go get some new comics, it's been a while lol. Great job once again buddy! :)
Thanks, sir! Yes go browse through your local comic book store! Mission: Comics is still my go to even though it's a little farther from my house. But it's always inspiring to see all these art styles at the comic book store. There's still something about physical comics that I just can't give them up completely even though I have so much access to them digitally.
love your art, love the movie, I know how you feel
Oh wow! Thank you very much I'm glad you liked my drawing and I'm glad to you loved the movie too! Steppen wolf rocked so hard! I watched that whole Amazon chase scene and the fight between him, WW and Cyborg again a week ago! So gooood!
Satoshi Kon was assistant of Otomo
Now it totally makes sense! :)
Looking fresh bro!
Heck yeah!!!
I remember those days fondly! Love that concept. Those ideas are yours, brother. Would love to see more.
I didn't get Kirby at first. Amazing artist.
Awesome!
Awesome work! I love it!
Dope!!
This is really awesome!!!
Thank you Faulty Rocket! I hear you're doing some Unity studies! maybe we can jam on something one of these days?!
Aww, Arvin, I'm blushin' here! Thanks! Also, this process walkthrough just helped me out a lot on a project I'm working on now. Double thanks!
It did?! I'm glad you were able to take something away from it!! I'm sad I wasn't able to take any of your classes in college! I switched to FAV towards the end of sophomore year, I think? Illustration was so hard! Thank you for your support, I really do appreciate it and hope your project turns out the way you want it to!
@@comixrant I'm under NDA, but I will be using a bunch of 2D animation stuff to suggest later 3D animation, and to know that Procreate can help with that? Mind blown. Thanks! I'll share when I can.
@@Pneumostome Ooh! If it's animation programs you're looking for, a friend of mine recommended this to me www.roughanimator.com/ It's also in app form and it can do multiple layers much, much better than Procreate would and I've seen him pump out looping anims on FB where multiple layers are looping at different intervals. It looks like less of a headache if you want your backgrounds and foregrounds to remain stationary/ be animated differently. I don't have it myself because that's how cheap I am with money right now, but it's only $5!
@@comixrant Thank you! And here's one back at you. It's free and open source, and I teach it. Hint hint if you're interested. This particular aspect is just a bit complicated for what I need at the moment, but I think you'll be intrigued....ua-cam.com/video/H10rQoSg41c/v-deo.html
@@Pneumostome I always wanted to dip into Blender! I use Maya for work mostly, but a lot of the outsourcers would use Blender for the things they'd send to my old company. I heard about Grease Pencil but never knew exactly what it could do. This looks great! Hmmm... maybe for a future promo clip!
"Deathlok: The Brains of the Outfit" is one of my favorite Jackson Guice works. Glad you gave him a shoutout! Loving these streams!
YESSSS. Deathlok by Jackson Guice was doooope!
Such a Bob Ross quality.
