    I just passed my Sport Pilot FAA written test today, yay! The bad news is the last spot in the EAA Sport Pilot Academy was taken last Friday. I can wait until June or find another school… (All the local schools only do PP)

      I know it is more money, but go ahead and get your PPL if you can, rather than wait. It is true there are places in the country where LSA instruction is sparse.

    I'm training in a J3 Cub, fulfilled requirements (and then some!), waiting on a DPE. How do you think the MOSAIC changes will affect the prices of the newly included LSA aircraft?

    • @J3PiperCub
      @J3PiperCub 22 години тому

      @@commentatron I think the new additions like 172’s and the like will get even more expensive, the same thing happened when basic med came into being. Traditional LSA Cubs and champs probably won’t change much.

    If it’s allowed for pipeline such work, would that mean I need to get a commercial too? And would I need PPL then? Or can I just do my light sport and then get my commercial?

    • @jrcolmena
      @jrcolmena 9 днів тому

      I'm guessing you need the follow the traditional POL-commercial route for pilot training, and this is more about using LSA aircraft for commercial purposes, hence you could buy newer non-certified aircraft for the commercial work, but the pilot training requirements being the same. But what do I know.

    When you say "controllable pitch propellers" are allowed --- do you mean "ground adjustable props" or "constant speed props" (or both)? Frankly, it sure would be nice if the rotax 916 engines (which require constant speed props, I think) can power new light sport airplanes.

    The 85 HP Continental is a nice addition to your J-3 because it doesn't mess up the feel/balance of the airplane like putting really big engines on the old 65 HP trainers. One of the really useful things about all the low powered trainers is that they teach/demand total energy management. I taught in all of them at very high DA airports, midday in summer as well. With heavier pilots and passengers these days they teach energy management well at lower DA as well. I used to say, "If pulling on the stick does not get you the climb you want, try pushing a bit. Level in low ground effect to cruise airspeed on the long runways up high was 50% to my total energy. Pitch to just over the obstruction, as Wolfgang suggests, saved some of that life giving airspeed, and down drainage egress was more free energy. Enjoy the ability to zoom a bit on the extra fuel energy, but don't forget Wolfgang's "Law of the roller coaster." Don't lose all the good energy management techniques the old girl has taught you so far.

    Well, I look at it this way. I would not want my wife or children to fly with any light sport pilot unless I knew them and/or had flown with them and felt comfortable with their piloting skills…especially not in a high performance complex aircraft. Light sport is a short cut and after 31 years of flying and nearly 25 years as a CFI, one thing I’ve concluded is that there are no safe shortcuts in aviation.
