Real World Camera Comparison: The Blackmagic Pyxis VS Lumix S5iix VS Pocket Cinema Camera 4k
There has been a lot of discussion out there about weather the Blackmagic Pyxis is the best value cinema camera out there right now. Depending on your definition of a "cinema camera" maybe it is. I still wanted to take this opportunity to test it out against the two cameras I've been championing as the best value cameras out there, the Panasonic Lumix S5iix and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k.
I took the time to test out the build quality, rolling shutter, stabilization, anamorphic support, aliasing/moire and of course image quality.

This Blackmagic Pyxis Unboxing Got Too CINEMATIC To Handle!(Halloween Special)

It's usually not my thing, but I decided to make an unboxing video for the Blackmagic Pyxis and I gotta say, it was more fun than I anticipated! I'm pretty excited to get try this camera out over the next few weeks! This was mostly filmed with the Blackmagic Pocket 4k because I enjoy showing off what that camera is capable of when in the hands of someone with middling talent. If you were lookin...
The Blazar Cato Lenses Are Causing Drama in the Youtube Filmmaking Space... Let's talk about it?

So the Blazar Cato 2x Anamorphic Lenses came out to a mixed, but mostly positive reception. Nick Salazar was the first person on youtube to voice his displeasure, then Anthony Rodriguez followed suit. They hinted that the reviews may be slanted positively because of the inherent bias that comes when working with major brands. Cam Mackey, along with several other creators took offense and... her...
The Lumix S5ii is STILL the Best Value Video Camera in 2024(cinematic review)

The motivation to create is inherent in and of itself. We create because we want to create.

Why I'd still choose a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera OVER the Pyxis in 2024

It's about value. All iterations of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras outperform the Pyxis in value and some of them outperform it in image quality, accessories and versatility as well. The Pyxis is still cool though. Wait 6 months and they'll probably drop the price.

It's a matter of processing. There have been a TON of cameras since 2019 that have used the Sony based "IMX 410" sensor. It generally tops out at 18ms and reads as slow as 25ms(in 16:9)

You focus too hard on making the talking head shot look good that when it comes to test footage it looks extremely bland, and didnt get as much time to crafting/fine tuning. So you cant be too upset or on the defense when someone calls out the "real" world test segment when it looks like it was given like 1/8th of your attention 😅 All these beautiful cameras in your posession and you give us these type of results 💔

Any camera looks good when you curate the lighting to the cameras capabilities. The point of the comparison was to put the cameras in difficult lighting situations to see how they hold up. It was a stress test, not an attempt to show off my dp and color grading "skills".

Great video...I actually want to get an S5IIx, it is more versatile, but I wouldn't think that the Pyxis (which I love) would be a comparison to it...I get that they have similar features, but its a mirrorless vs a box camera. I would assume that the Black Magic Cinema 6k would be the S5IIx competitor, as they have similar form factor. Either way, really nice video.

Yeah, they definitely have different applications. This is really more for the people out there questioning if it's worth it to jump from a mirrorless camera to a pyxis. Shooting in BRAW bypasses the noise reduction. The Pyxis has a worse signal to noise ratio than the s5ii. They both have the same sensor, but different rolling shutter and noise sensitivity. It’s a processing issue, not a sensor issue.

👀 ditch that sigma 18-35mm and rent the SLR Magic 12mm mft mount I don’t use a speed booster which reduces the image quality to me. I had a 18-35 with a speed booster and it was lame so I sold it and got the Slr magic years ago. I can out class those two cameras with the 4k and the SLR Magic which I still have am just saying the pocket is a monster and since I started learning lighting before I sold it the last 3 videos I’ve shot I can mix the footage with the fx30 and u wouldn’t able to tell the difference. I think the biggest point of contention and the through line for every major critique on any of the so called "shills" is the simple/obvious difference between an honest critical review vs a straight up ad. A couple of Cams videos really seem to blur that line and it feels very much like we're being sold something, which would be fine if it weren't being packaged as a simple Pros vs Cons list from a working pro lookin to help others cut through the wave of inflated/inaccurate marketing content. He's clearly adding to the hype and to say Cam's channel isn't a "review channel" seems like a stretch cuz that's exactly what the guy is known for. I mean he's literally a famous youtuber with tons of subscribers and while those things aren't mutually exclusive he's just not really known for his filmmaking. Which is fine and if he wants to make a name in the filmmaking or even just the ad space, I genuinely hope he has just as much success as he's had with his YT tutorials & reviews.

With all due respect, I do not think it is always so simple or obvious to distinguish between an ad and a review.

Great stuff! A company asked me to take down a video that showed a minor issue I had with their product. I laughed because the video is mostly positive but they get scared of people seeing fact based issues. Safe to say the video is still up. If we don’t show each other the real world, we will all buy the wrong stuff.

I honestly didn't know that was so prevalent until I made this video. It's crazy that these companies think a couple hundred dollar light is going to buy our integrity. I commend you, sir!

I love the look of the Pavo's. my buddy was just on a movie that used them, and the limited frames I was able to see (mostly just trees lol, everything else was NDA'd) but they looked gorgeous. Definitely an intense look, but would be great for a specific project.

That's the thing about ALL of these lenses, if you avoid minimum focus and stop down a bit, they're all gonna look good in the hands of those who have an idea of what they're doing. It's the anamorphic "glamour shots" where I don't like the character. Then when you factor that they're $5,000 a lens, that's when I have to Nope out. I have to credit them for being interesting and doing something different though!

Scam Mackay not just does the most to sell products, but he actively goes after commenters that have balanced questions or potential criticisms about set products… used to be a fan of the guy, but saw way too much of that stuff, after about the 10th or 15th time I saw that unsubscribed stopped following him.

i bought the cato lens looks fine to me i love distortion thats what im looking for. just the fact that is a pl lens thats 2x anamorphic is amazing but let see once i get them. altho it looks those lenses seem to be s35 that happen to have large coverage.

That's a really good point that I heard mentioned for the Atlas Mercury's but haven't really been talked about for the Cato! I'm planning on getting my hands on them in the future just to test them against a conventional 2x s35 and see how they hold up.

I’ve been sent this video by a few people! Couple points I’ll make. Access journalism is real. A lot of people do it and it’s usually pretty easy to tell the ones who are in that boat, Just wait a couple months after their video and see what the non sponsored video say! If it doesn’t lineup with consensus time and time again, you know! They also shouldn’t be calling anything a review when they have been paid to make a video about it or they have talking points as part of their agreement! That is by nature preview and order review! I can’t speak for everyone else but for us if we don’t like something we will often talk to the brand and ask them if they want to continue with the video! We are not going to lie to our audience and we are not big enough at this point where we are doing it full-time and we don’t have sponsors for each video so we don’t necessarily want to make a video about we don’t like we don’t really want to make a video crapping on a company or product! We have also had companies react very negatively to our criticisms, . A lighting company asked me to take down my review because they said their sales had dropped since I posted it. They were expecting a promotional piece, not a review! In a video where we recommended the lights, they said we were too negative 🤣 We have also had lens companies use our footage to promote their lenses but they’re not include us in the next round of reviews for new products. Because they don’t want reviews, they want promotional pieces. Generally, I’m okay with that as long as we’re not going to lie to our audience and the brand is clear that’s what they want from the start! in which case we will try to get some kind of funding for the video and we will fully disclose that it sponsored and not a Review! An issue with UA-cam versus actual news organisations is the news organisations generally have funding when a lot of these UA-camrs rely on to be able to get their hands on products to make videos so there is an incentive for them to try to keep that positive! Most companies weren’t ever tell you can’t criticise. We have definitely been blacklisted by a couple of companies because we didn’t give them glowing reviews without criticism

I'm a huge fan your channel and how you guys actually break down the flaws and limitations of the gear you review! Your video on the DJI focus pro in particular helped in my decision to hold out for a future release(something that DJI definitely does NOT want to hear) There are some channels people go to because there's a piece of kit out there that they know they want but enjoy seeing it utilized and what it's capable of.. And then there's the more classic technical style reviews for people who are on the fence and want to get the full story on if it's right for them. Sometimes people criticize one for not being like the other... You're right though. If you're unsure about making a purchase decision, it's best to wait a few months until the gear trickles down to the reviewers who are more likely to help you make a decision, rather than excited to purchase it. Dealing with companies like that have got to be frustrating but for whatever it's worth, I think the value reviewers like you and Gerald Undone have is indispensable. Keep it up bro.

Companies will align with people who enjoy using their kit - and those people will often go out and showcase how they'd use it and share their experiences with it - that doesn't mean the person is lying to you. It doesn't mean they are being paid to make all this stuff up and put on an act. People who don't like something can also be biased, it works both ways. Obviously there's a positivity bias in that people tend to make videos about stuff they like - but this is true whether you purchase the kit yourself, rent it or get sent it. You're still choosing to make a video for a certain reason, which involves some form of bias. The very act of making a video about anything involves some form of bias. Bias is inescapable - if you're optimising your video to perform well on UA-cam there's bias, if you have an outside sponsor - there's bias. If you're rich and wealthy and self fund everything - still bias. If you have a personal UA-cam channel - 9/10 you're gonna be sharing your own personal tastes and preferences, which shockingly yes, will be biased. There is nothing wrong with that. People are allowed to make videos about the things they like. No one has been forced to buy anything. There's responsibility on all sides. There's a space for cold technical reviews (which are still biased) but there's also space for creators to showcase the gear and share their excitement in using it. We have space for people to like something and not like it. I think if you don't like something - make a video about why YOU don't like it, explain your reasoning and contribute to the discussion and provide your audience with actual useful information as to why you don't think it's a good product, but don't forget that that's your opinion(!) There's just a toxic culture thats developed around this whole industry and at the end of the day it's just cameras. You can't say anything on UA-cam now without be attacked by which ever group disagrees with you - if you like a camera you're a shill! If you don't like a camera you're clearly in the pocket of a rival brand or you're not a professional or a enough of an expert... or don't know what you're talking about etc. etc.

This can be true but the inverse that reviewers won't review products they don't think are worth reviewing can be true at the same time. The power-dynamic doesn't only lean one-way.
