Proud to be available for purchase through Tapspace! www.tapspace.com/mallet-solos/song-for-monica/ "This multifaceted vibraphone solo is both a lilting ode to a youthful first love and a painful reflection on the suicide of a friend, a friend who was that same first love. The free opening introduces a series of ethereal lines that hang over a triplet ostinato. At times dissonant, the figures a...

Your own talent and the accompanying playlist is a fitting memorial to a wonderful woman. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and comments. I will cherish this post forever. Del
@captainbuttons- Thanks a ton for the comment!! This piece is so much fun to play, and I can't wait for the next opportunity I get to perform it. For measures 124-127, I took out the high B's in the left hand (so beats 4-6 of measure 125 and 127 are still as written). In my experiments with revoicing in this section, I was dissatisfied with changing the octave of any bass or melody notes, so this was really the only option to keep it sounding natural to my taste. 128-132 are entirely as written: I pull my right hand down to the extreme edge of the bars closest to me (similar to playing on the edges of the sharp/flat keys, but these are naturals). This way, my left hand and arm have plenty of room to get into position to make a great sound for the written part. This section is one of the least idiomatic or natural sections of the piece. For that reason, it's a great opportunity for each performer to have a distinct way to play it. I really love those kinds of moments in music and if you have any other ideas, that's awesome!! Peace!
That piece looks so fun to play!
Hey! Great job on this! I have a question for you. How are you playing ms 124-132? It's written very awkwardly and most people seems to have changed it. Did you just re-voice the chords so your hands don't have to cross? (ms 124-127). But then there's all that chromatic stuff 128-132 which it doesn't look like you play it as written either. Just looking for the opinion of a fellow marimbist!
amazing
Thanks Danielle! I can't believe it has taken me a year to notice this comment, but maybe late is better than never! Here, I'm using all malletech mallets and I really like their feel and tone. The 3 series I'm choosing from are Bobo's, Stout's and Concerto. Hop(2)- mallet 1, CN9; mallet 2&3, GS7; mallet 4, KB11 Turn- mallet 1, CN9; mallet 2-4, GS7 Slide- mallet 1, GS7, mallets 2-4 are Bobo's Hopefully this is helpful. Thank you very much for the comments. I'm very glad you enjoy it!!
Thanks a ton for the comment! I first started working on the piece about 6 months before this performance. I performed it several times before this one, however. I definitely recommend working on this. All three movements have lots of challenges but I found it to be very rewarding to learn and perform. And, of course, it's gorgeous music!! Thanks again!!
I could tell Bridget was lovin that tambourine feature. lol
Very moving, very well done.
Johnny, it's time to put away your toys and go to school!
great job, very well done! i really enjoy the sounds you chose to accompany the glock notes. superb!
Sounds good, but doesn't look like you guys are enjoying it. Feel the internal pulse with your body! Very important
Hi Rod - this is really good. Thank you for sharing it! I am working on this solo and was wondering what mallets you decided to use for each of the movements, because I think they are perfect for this piece.
burnin!
@MainstreamMarimba This concerto is a blast to play! Thanks for noticing some of that fancy video editing. The audio and one of the camera angles were shot in the same, single take. Then we played back the recording REALLY loud so I could hear it over myself as I played along while we shot from various angles. Evan synced it all up and chose his favorite angles from each shot and here you go! Probably would be a little easier with multiple cameras, though. Haha. Thanks again!
@MainstreamMarimb Hey, there! Congrats on the Seminar- that sounds like a great experience. Indiana is a GREAT school for percussion and other music. You should not hesitate to check out the professors and get to know some of us in the studio. Let me know if you have any questions. Best!
@aeldridgeperc Thanks, Andy. I hope things are going well with you and I look forward to catching up soon I hope!
@grimtim2 This piece is a blast to play and worth all the effort I have put into it so far. Thank you so much for your music and checking out my performance of it!

great piece, great playing
Wow! Great performance, Rod!
good work Rod, you nailed it! paul lansky
This piece has always been one of my favorites to play =) Beautiful piece and superb editing!! Were multiple cameras set up for this performance? Or did you perform it multiple times? -Mainstream Marimba
Fantastic work! I'm actually checking out IU for percussion performance. I'll be a senior in high school next year and I was chosen to attend the Juilliard Seminar next week! What are your opinions on Indiana? Obviously you must like it if you are receiving your Master's there, haha!! -MainstreamMarimba
