    I like scenes where the postman finds the mail truck with some usable supplies in it. Also the road where he finds some supplies. Seems like most of the You Tube Apocalyptic films are people walking around shooting each other. In real life I think the survivors would be far more cautious and hunkered down, I know that I would. But it is what it is. I admire the makers of these movies as they will get better over time. My favorite movie is The Rover. I won't spoil it for you. The Road Warrier is a bit unrealistic cause the gasoline will go away early on and V-8 won't be zooming around for long.

    As requested, comments. Stopping the video and typing up as I go. 0:33 As with part 1, your camerawork has really improved. That's the immediate standout from the opening shot. I liked the shot through the hole in the broken glass, more stuff like that could be used symbolically. 0:45 I wish I could remember where I saw it, but there was a film commentator on YT talking about how in movies back in the 1940s the average shot was like 2 minutes or something, now it's 2 seconds or less. He was talking about how the Shylaman movies tended to have longer shots, and that this allowed the viewer to be immersed in the scene, rather than pushed along like a ride at Luna Park. Obviously there is a spectrum here, and personal taste comes into it a lot, as well it depends on genre - action probably needs quicker shots, romance longer, etc. You seem to be going instinctively with shot length here and are doing a pretty good job, but doing it consciously can let you reinforce the intended tone of your film, and of course it doesn't have to be the same shot length throughout, it can speed up in tense moments etc. 1:31 I think yours is the first short I've seen which addresses the need to change the filter on your gas mask. Apparently in some worlds gas masks are infinite like firearms magazines. Judging by what he sees later I wonder if his filter was laced with something, though :) End: firearms use again. A military or police-trained firearms user, or one who's been through years of an apocalypse or whatever and learned the hard way, will keep their dominant hand on the pistol grip or stock, and use their non-dominant hand to handle objects, open doors, etc. They'll also have their firearm always point the same way as their gaze, unless they're looking at their teammate. Of course, if you want to convey that the person is inexperienced, that works too! Again, the improvement in camerawork is really standout. You could probably benefit from something to steady the cam, which I believe can also be done with editing software post-production. Of course you might also be aiming for a Bourne-style shaky-cam effect, and that's a legitimate choice too. But like the shot length, it's good to do this as a deliberate choice because it gives a different feel.

    • @maketreal
      @maketreal День тому

      Thanks again for all the feedback, it means a lot. You were right in saying I just went by feel with the shot length. I tried to give some sort of rhythm to this film, but it can make the pacing of horror films predictable. I’ve heard some horror films use abnormally long takes to unsettle the audience, I have yet to try this. The gun handling was also unintentional, I tried to capture the panic of the character, rather than present him as a hardened warrior. People cheer for warriors, they fear for civilians, so I guess that work out well enough. The changing of the gas mask filter was something that I wanted to convey, because as you said, they aren’t infinite. One of my biggest peeves in movies and games is incorrect use of gas mask. I may not know much about guns yet, but I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to gas masks. Thank you again for the advice, it means a lot. Your advice on gun discipline is exceptional, so I’m going to take a guess and say that you were in the army at one stage or another. Let me know if my guess was correct or not :)

      @@maketreal As I said you can take lots of different approaches, the point is that whatever approach you take (with camera angles, shot length, firearms use, amount of dialogue, whatever), those approaches should be deliberate. That is, you should have deliberated on them - thought about them. What effect will it give? Would that be cool and interesting? I have felt the weight of a pack on my back. However, you don't have to have done so to have interesting insights. We're privileged to live in a time where there are a lot of resources online we can draw on to inform ourselves, it just takes some time. It's like the old saying: good, fast or cheap, choose one, do things right and you might get two. You seem to be limited to cheap, and that's alright. If you think about things and spend a lot of time with cheap software on post-production, it won't be fast, but I think it can be really good. Of course there's also an argument for just churning the pieces out and muddlign through. Up to you :) Next time try email, it'll be faster and we can talk a bit more frankly.

    As requested, feedback. Again, watching some seconds, then pausing and writing. And trying not to spoiler for people foolish enough to read the comments without watching first :) 1. I like the way you used the establishing shots of the house. Atmosphere: dark and windy. This sets the mood, we know we're not about to watch a romantic comedy. 2. the low shots also reinforce this atmosphere. Being low down means whatever's coming will be higher than you, which means threatening and dangerous. 3. I see you've solved the firearms issue as I suggested - in poor light or silhouetted, it can be a plastic fantastic and doesn't matter. The movement however gives away that it's very light. You could resolve this by taping some weights to it. 4. not everyone feels this way, but I think the gas mask as a prop in PA and action movies is a bit overdone. That's a personal opinion though, and I can see why you'd do it in some circumstances, like keeping the wearer mysterious and threatening, or where you want the actor to look older, younger, a different gender, or so you can have a few people playing dozens of goons to save on extras, or where the setting demands it. 5. you might want to add some sounds in post-production. It can be an aesthetic choice to have it all almost silent, that's fine. Likewise to hear every click and creak. But here it's inconsistent - we hear the click-clack of the weapon, but can't hear footsteps, breathing, the brushing of clothing, the creaking of floorboards or anything like that. 6. likewise for sounds of fighting - there's always going to be a grunt of effort, nobody gets punched, shot or stabbed without at least going "oof", and of course if they fall unconscious or die you'll hear their body thump to the ground and/or against objects. Some horror movies with supernatural elements will replace the grunt/thump with a scream and then the sounds of bestial eating, or the bzzztweap of the victim being sucked into another dimension or whatever. Others might show the flashes of gunfire or sounds of struggle, and the camera pulls slowly away from where the action is, and fades to black as music comes in. But never just silence. This is overall a great improvement on your previous work. Especially the camerawork.

    • @maketreal
      @maketreal 9 днів тому

      Once again, thanks for taking the time to watch and write out your advice. The choice to have the movie mostly silent was intentional. I actually wiped the sound from the original footage, to much unwanted noise, and added all the sound in in post production. Although I couldn’t put in as many sounds as I wanted to, because my editing software won’t allow more than three sounds layered over each other. So did had to choose which sounds I really wanted. I am also of the opinion that the whole gas mask thing is a bit over used in movies, but the script I have in mind actually does require them later on. Plus it helps to hid my bad acting :) But once again, thank you for all the advice, and taking the time to watch my little films. I hope to hear from you again soon, and to hear your opinion on some of my other projects.

    I see you're keen for detailed feedback, I'll offer it as I watch. I'm respecting your limits of budget etc and thinking of how you might work within that. 1. Scenes with the coloured barrels and magazines obviously makes it less realistic-looking. Even just some duct tape and/or black/grey paint could deal with this. Obviously you may be restricted by local firearms laws, but remember there also exist armourer, collector etc licenses in most of the Anglosphere, and you've often got a bit more freedom when you're operating on private land. I also watched a postapocalyptic vid a while back where each time the weapon was "fired", its barrel was offscreen - no muzzle flash, just the sound. It actually worked pretty well. 2. This makes filming and editing a bit harder, but you can then film the bits showing firearms on private land, and the bits where they're out of shot on public. 3. You've done pretty well with the muzzle flashes and sounds, so perhaps you could get out the coloured bits of the firearms with CGI, too. Lighting can also do this - if shootouts are in poor light, it's harder to see colours of any kind. 4. Muzzle flagging. People who are trained to use firearms, when they point them around, if they turn past a friendly, they lower their weapon. And if you're not trained, after a little while of hanging out with other people with firearms you'd figure it out - tends to make most people a bit nervous when they have a firearm pointed at them, even momentarily. But if you want, in a script this is a good way to distinguish between people who have some experience, and complete newbies. "Don't point that at me, mate!" 5. Hand-to-hand sounds. I'd go for consistency here. If you're going to have the (unrealistic) schwick of a blade being drawn, then have the (unrealistic) sound of blows hitting people, too. If you have relative silence, then have relative silence. I'd also add a few more grunts of effort and think of the sounds people are likely to make when they get whacked, even if it doesn't injure them, still hurts. This can be edited in post-filming. You have reasonably good fight choreography here, make the best of it. With the right sounds and music it'd look much more realistic. 6. Knives are hard to do. Remember you can get theatrical knives where the blade retracts when you push it into someone, making it look like they're being stabbed. The Hollywood throat-slash is much harder to do. But you don't have to show the gore. See the firearms comments above, the stab/slash can always be just offscreen - you've done that already so you know this. The audience only really needs to see the gore if it's the One True Final Enemy or something, the endless goons can be dispatched with the gore offscreen. 7. Voices. Try to get a consistent volume. Obviously this is tricky when people are moving, walking as 6' into this. So you can have the conversation when they're still - after all, in regular conversations outside, people do actually walk a few steps, stop to say a few words, walk a few steps more, etc. And nowadays you can get bluetooth body mics and so on, not too pricey. I'm 6'14" in and that's probably enough for now, I'll say more if you find it useful. As I said, I'd never offer unsolicited advice but I see from other comments you actually want it. I appreciate the lack of resources but I think you can probably do a bit more with the resources you have.

      Thanks for the feedback. First of all, I really appreciate that you took the time to leave this much advice. And I will definitely be using it in future. I will admit that I didn’t know very much about firearms etiquette going into this project, and laws around firearms are very strict in my area. Even nerf guns are categorised as firearms. I think my biggest mistake with this movie, was the plot was to ambitious, for the time and resources I had. But if you have anymore advice I’d love to hear it. I understand that I’m an amateur and have a lot to learn.

      @@maketreal Use the difficulty. There's a great Michael Caine clip where he talks about how early on in his career, he was in a stageplay. He was supposed to come in through a door into a room with a couple arguing. But someone had put a chair in front of the door. He stopped, and the director asked why. "Well there was a chair there blocking me." "So? Use the difficulty." "What do you mean?" "If we're doing a tragedy, you pick the chair up and throw it angrily. If it's a comedy, trip over it and fall. Use the difficulty." Caine said that'd been his life's motto ever since. You have the difficulty of lack of access to firearms and decent firearm replicas. Partly legal, partly budgetary, but it doesn't really matter. Use the difficulty. As I mentioned, you don't have to show the ends of the firearms. They can be holstered, or carried barrel-down, the tips always just out of shot. You can use this to make a different kind of movie. If you're showing the whole firearms all the time, it's an action movie. If you're zoomed in on the actor, it's closer to a drama. When you're zoomed in as the person fires, what expression does he have on his face? Calm? Maybe he's a combat veteran. Panicked? Maybe not. Afraid? Angry? Vengeful? Is his face clean, dirty, injured? By not focusing on the weapons but instead on the person, you change it from being action to drama. You get into that nice bit, "show, don't tell." Use the difficulty. You can also take the difficulty of being in a place where firearms are heavily-restricted and make it your characters' difficulty, too. "This would be much easier with a 9mm." "Tell me about it. But we had precious few before all this, everything was illegal, they wanted to keep us safe, yeah? Hah! Bit late for that now. Everyone blew through the ammo years ago, now if you see one people assume you're just bluffing. When you pull out a blade they know you're serious." Maybe a decade or two after the apocalypse the lack of firearms made people bring back swords, and spear and shield. Now you have a different setting! Use the difficulty. Or perhaps the scarce firearms are monopolised by a few armed groups - the antagonists of the story. You never see them close - after all, the advantage of firearms is you can engage the targets from out of their sight. Blam, bling, the heroes jump in a ditch and run along it to get away from the crazy bastards with guns. The protagonists come up to a wall in the twilight, there's a guy standing there, a spotlight comes on and lights them up, he's silhouetted - and his silhouette shows him standing with a rifle. Now the fact that it's got an orange plastic knob on the end or is your cardboard one doesn't matter, we just see a black silhouette. And he looks sinister, and all the more sinister because this is the first firearm we've seen in the story. The protagonists are scared. If they want into this place, they either have to use diplomacy, or sneak in - in either case, they won't see firearms much. Use the difficulty. I'm not even an amateur movie-maker, I've never made one, so you're infinitely more experienced than me. But I watch a lot of low or zero budget movies, and I can see how they use the difficulty, and they usually do a much much better job than people with bigger budgets - just look at how the physical models of the original Star Wars movies stand up today against the heaps more expensive CGI of the 1990-2010 period. That's because constraints improve things. A big budget means you can rely on big splashy effects and the fame of the actors and all that. A low budget makes you focus on the minimum special effects to get the story going, and good acting and plot. Put another way: people vs props. When you have more of one, you'll use less of the other. This is why there is never good acting in a Michael Bay movie, but there is brilliant acting in a local communitry group's stageplay. Use the difficulty. I'm not sure that you even need any practical advice, so much as that mindset: use the difficulty. But it can be helpful to look at how others do things. I've got a playlist of postapocalyptic short movies which I think are well-made, check my profile for "PA short movies." Email me if you'd like to chat more, us Down Unders have to support each-other.

      @greenwithagun thanks again for the advice. As I previously mentioned I got too carried away with the story, and overlooked the execution of the film. With my more recent film’s I’ve tried to focus more on technique and less on story. I would love to get your opinion on my newest short film series “Freaks.” I’ve really tried to lean into the horror style of directing. “Hint, don’t show.” I also real like your “Use the difficulty,” and will be adopting that. Really great to hear your advice and hope to hear from you again.

Perhaps you should familiarise yourself with Rooseveld’s quote about the man in the arena. Honestly, no one needs your amateur opinion. Get off your high horse and go watch something else.

    Damn that’s awesome. In terms of the cutting of the wood, at the start, I would really just use a normal saw to do it. It takes a while, but it is faster and easier in my opinion than carving with a chisel. For the shaping, I would also say that a rasp and spokeshave make it easier. About the angle grinder issue, for me when I make incisions, I normally make a bunch holes with a drill along it. I then carefully use a chisel and flush saw to smoothen it.

      Thank you so much for the advice. For the issue with the angle grinder, I did consider drilling holes and using a chisel. But I don’t have a chisel thin enough and I wanted the lever to fit nice and snug.thank you for your feedback and advice, much appreciated 👍
