Applying risk management in work and at home - Rebranding Safety with John Pares
TW - talk of sensitive topics, including suicide, abduction. Profanity may also be used.
Following on from a conversation over dinner at the EHS Congress in Berlin, John joins James to pick up where they left off - how can we take what we've learnt in Risk Management and apply it to running our households? And does it work the other way - can we apply what we learn in parenting to the workplace? How do we prepare our children for becoming adults? This is a cracking conversation absolutely jam packed full of stories! Thank you, John, for joining us on Rebranding Safety. Enjoy......

    Thanks, I could feel the utter frustration and empathise. We need to simplify, to what is pertinent, we really do. What is often overlooked is that time spent collecting paper that is of little real value is time that could have been spent ensuring that sites are safer and build quality is better. Creating a system that alienates others isn't clever. It absorbs time and increases inefficiency. The other issue that directly impacts on safety during construction is the individual. No matter how clever you are, you cannot legislate for individuals, their personal problems and attitude. The fool, the foolhardy, the stressed out, the depressed and demoralised, the overworked, the person with worries and concerns that impinge on their concentration and focus. Then you have how much people are paid. Many problems occur because designers, contractors and subcontractors are not being paid enough to do their jobs properly. They are cutting corners because they have families to feed and mortgages to pay. Mortgage rates jump, or not paid on another project, and threats of bankruptcy. Stress kills in many ways. Training! The main contractor employs subcontractors. They are basically management companies that minimise their own staffing levels, they off load the cost of training. Who in the system has enough capacity to train apprentices? What does it take to describe yourself as a bricklayer or plasterer? Is it any wonder we have a shortage of skilled labour? We need to get back to basics. Drawings, detailing and specification need to improve, as does actual supervision on site. Conditions can change, and the unpredictable often happens. Boots on the ground rather than in the office checking how many boxes are ticked.

    You said or when it says and, so im confused what about a project lasting 31 days with 10 workers?

    • @TimeCivic
      @TimeCivic 12 днів тому

      I think he meant “and” as that’s what other sources say. But I’m still confused as to why 30 working days and 20 workers would ever be applicable instead of 500 working days. 30 x 20 =600 so the limit for option 2 is already exceeded

    • @RebrandingSafety
      @RebrandingSafety 10 днів тому

      Sorry if I didn't make it clear. Basically it's notifiable if: last more than 30 days and have more than 20 workers working at the same time at any point on the project or exceed 500 person days of construction work

      This is a huge challenge. Hopefully the building RP has details to help. Sometimes you can gain evidence from the building itself and buildings around. After that, go to Google. Building Regs and planning records. History sites. Unfortunately sometimes you can only make the best call you can. Just make it clear that you are making assumptions based on XYZ evidence.

    Great conversation, it’s so refreshing to just hear people talk normally about health and safety rather than flexing their power trip muscles. I am fairly new to health and safety and have come from the tools so can sometimes feel a little like I don’t belong in the H&S environment as I am always looking from the view of the lads on site when a lot of H&S managers just seem to want to enforce and punish although I will say I’ve met some great people who are definitely trying to move away from this thought process.

      It can be really tricky to get a foot in the door in the industry but I'd advise joining an institute like the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM). You could go for the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) but they have a bit of an ex-firefighter bias. The IFSM offers some mentoring opportunities where you can go along with experienced fire risk assessors and shadow then for the day which can really help your experience. I'd also recommend just contacting some consultancy firms using their online forms with a copy of your CV and just explain that you're looking for a trainee-level position. Some firms you could look at are: Tetra Consultaning EDP UK EEUK Ltd Hydrock (Now Stantec) Momentum Health & Safety Consultants Zeta Services These are all firms where I know people who work there and they're all nice people and seem happy with these places. I also work at one of them lol. The only place I'd advise you to avoid like the bloody plague is Ark Workplace Risk. They pay well but they're not very nice people and the workload is insane! Another place you could try is Quidvis Risk. They're not a bad bunch of people but they do all their assessments on an app which is not really conducive to a good risk assessment as it's all drop-down and pre-written answers. A good place for entry level and getting used to the process of simple risk assessments but definitely not a good place to develop as a competent risk assessor. I hope that's of some use mate, and good luck!

      The above comment pretty much nails it to be honest. The only thing I would add trying looking into the FPA for some Fire Risk Assessing course. The ones we have put our team on through them have been really impressive.

      @@RebrandingSafety I think that some people genuinely don't believe that there are lessons to be learnt from fables or fiction or even history for that matter. When I have facilitated training on investigations, I use Space event (Apollo1, Challenger, the Columbia disasters along with Apollo 13 along with the Kobioshi Maru). And I did it because of a personal passion and I saw those were more about the people and situations then the scope or location. At first when I started talking about this with a group of miners I was looked at as some weird Sci- Fi Nerd, and I was generally worried about receiving a wedgie. But, as time goes on it was those scenarios that started to help me build some trust with folks and forced them (at least I hope) to think more along the lines that Dekker talks about in towards a Just Safety Culture. One where we don't always blame the dead guy, we learn from the past and work towards a well earned bigger bonus. Anyways, keep up the good work I am quite enjoying your channel.

      Whilst I would say that I personally am not a fan because at some point HR would have to sack someone, and that's not very helpful to where safety needs to be. I have also seen HR and safety work well together in a joint department, so I suppose that it's more about the attitude and culture of the team/person/business
