      Don't quit until the bank comes knocking and forces you to hahah! Making mistakes is part of the entrepreneurial journey. I have made all of the same mistakes that I am talking about here and that is now how I know not to make them. Most of the best entrepreneurs I know who are doing multiple 8 figures businesses also made these mistakes. This is why being a founder is the ultimate game. It is a challenge that will force you to level up and grow far beyond who you are right now. So now you know what to do instead, how can you go back and plug the gaps? You can still do the research, and get validation. That will just tell you how to change your product to find that PMF faster! God Speed

    This is just what I needed to hear. I am in the fortunte, or unfortunate position of creating a product for myself, and realising that others in my same profession would (hopefully) love it. But this has stopped me from actually asking potential customers if this is really the case. This video has pushed me over the edge to actually stop developing and validate it, thanks

    • @minimalviablelaunch
      @minimalviablelaunch 3 місяці тому

      I love starting with a product for myself - but it does make it even more essential to get out there and validate unless you are going to keep it as a passion project. Then well - crack on! But the great thing about validation is that as you learn you will have incredible ideas about how to further innovate. Improving the product for your own use by understanding the problem more deepky. SO it's a win win!

      Yeah that's a great point. There's probably 10 different things I've not thought of you implement yet that others would. By the way, I did actually just create a Google form, take very short demo videos, made some social media posts and send some cold emails to potential beta testers. Your video was the straw 🐫 thanks mate

    How to approach this when you have existing players in the market or solving same problem that you are trying to solve? Can we still get customers before the build?

    • @minimalviablelaunch
      @minimalviablelaunch 3 місяці тому

      Its actually amazing to have existing players in the market if they are older and slower. They likely have segments of customers within their customer base who are underserved and fed up. Ready for the next thing to come along and serve them better. You can absolutely still launch like this but you will need to identify who those underserved customers are - so that you can work out how to do a better job for them!

    So much wisdom in this video and exactly what I'm needing to hear right now. The part of the equation for a successful strategy that you didn't include, however, is having this video on repeat 24/7! I know most of these things deep down but hearing them logically laid so clearly is immensely helpful.

    @jakesaul9895 4 місяці тому

    Brilliant content as always. I'm in the middle of a ycombinator application but you remind me my heart is in being a zebra! I'm also interested, a lot of your argument was leaning into 99% of companies being killed in the pursuit of unicorn status, but isn't it true that some of those that fail to reach unicorn status manage to root out the cancer and rebuild as profitable companies without dying completely? Might be a small number but you make such a strong argument I wonder what percentage of VC backed companies die completely vs achieving any form of ongoing success. Also just wanna check, is there any way to get involved with the group without Facebook? Cheers

    • @minimalviablelaunch
      @minimalviablelaunch 4 місяці тому

      Thank you for your kind words once again! These comments really do mean a lot to keep me going producing these each week! Some companies do manage to escape the trap sure! Or find other investors and buyers. Heck you can even look into buying software companies as distressed assets for crazy low amounts (companies that fall into this trap). But in reality, why put yourself at risk. It isn't that VC investment is 100% bad. It has its place for certain companies and certain stages of growth. But what I am saying is, is that it shouldn't be the default. It should be the exception to the rule. First and foremost seek to make profit. Then if you need to go faster seek investment to speed up the machine you have built that is working. Investment doesn't fix a broken machine! I am rethinking the FB group. I am not a giant FB fan myself. We were thinking of using Campfire. Do you have any founder communities that you love being apart of? Where are they hosted?

    • @jakesaul9895
      @jakesaul9895 4 місяці тому

      @@minimalviablelaunch Yeah man honestly your content is excellent and I hope we can connect at some point, I'm procrastinating because I'm very conscious around budget at the moment and also not as far along as i'd like to be (I stay a bit guarded around projects I am working on at least until I can vaguely glimpse the finish line of an MVP, which I know isn't the best approach, but I have my reasons!) No I don't unfortunately, I got rid of all social media in 2015 (although I find Reddit and UA-cam very useful) although the first thing that comes to mind regarding a FB alternative is discord, or even patreon? I'm not an expert and quite possible FB is the right place for it, but maybe also having a discord people can connect on could work well? Just a thought. I'm actually in the middle of assessing the best approach to social media for the lead up to launch, because I know I'm putting myself at a huge disadvantage without a social media presence/social proof. Some combination of Reddit/x/linked in/ product hunt is the general advice I'm getting, so I'm getting my feet a bit wet at the moment. But this is a topic I'd be really interested in you covering at some point if you think it would be helpful to others (quite possible you already have?) We're all looking to help people with their pain points right? Well this is definitely one of mine! I'm just thinking now regarding social media in general most of the advice I am getting is likely from people of the unicorn mindset, would a zebra approach things differently? I guess they'd have to, right? Maybe social proof becomes more important?...less important? Can't quite figure it out! Ultimately I think I'm realising even if I have a great product some of the businesses I will need to target really will need significant social proof, so it feels like a chasm between where I'm at and where I might need to be in this regard. Any thoughts you might have on this would be incredibly helpful, but no pressure to reply just wanted to give you some feedback on what one of your followers is currently struggling with! Edit: just checked out campfire, funnily enough I almost mentioned a virtual classroom/course delivery platform but I couldn't think of any. Yeah I think that could work really well 👍

    Great video. What im struggling with clarifying is when you're saying 'delete' as much as possible, do you mean from the concept, or also from something you've already created? I.e I can make sense out of removing as much friction as possible to getting something launched, but if an onboarding system has already been built, for example, there aren't any time/cost/friction implications in including it, since its already included. So curious as to whether you're saying in that situation it would still be an asset to remove the onboarding and get in the trenches onboarding people manually. It's an interesting question because part of me can see the appeal of getting closer to your customers this way, but in its own way it also introduces it's own friction compared to an already built onboarding system, considering the 'time cost' has already been spent building the onboarding system, and then would need to be spent again manually onboarding.

    • @minimalviablelaunch
      @minimalviablelaunch 5 місяців тому

      Absolutely if you have already built something that makes your product easier to use, you may as well include it. When I say delete I mean from the concept in general if you can and it makes sense to do so. The lense I am using to look through really is what can we remove to move faster and get people into the system earlier. I want to get feedback from the market on anything I am making as quickly as possible. The worst scenario is spending months of time building something that no one wants or needs. So priority number one is avoiding that!

      Yeah man I'm working my way through your content this evening actually so just came across the group! I avoid Facebook in general but might need to break my rule this once to get involved as I'm planning for a launch within the next 5-6 weeks. I guarantee you subs will come, you're giving a lot of value. It also helps that because a lot of these messages are counterintuitive (most of us have an ego and want to launch something perfect/beautiful/revolutionary) hearing the argument and logic for a bare bones launch repeated and backed up can be very useful. It was a conclusion I'd been arriving at myself in recent weeks and you're helping me envision and justify that approach a lot better. It's actually what I really WANT to do as well, as you say, you keep more autonomy and freedom around the project and can focus on fleshing out something people really want. I am stuck in feeling I need to code a basic version of it though, but that's mostly because I'm most of the way there anyway and I don't see it taking much more than a month in total, but quite possible I could do with trimming down further. Cheers again 👍 @@minimalviablelaunch
