The great church of Glastonbury Abbey reimagined (animation and commentary)
One of the largest, and final, church buildings demolished in the wake of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, recreated in its modern environs.
Done plenty of G-Earth comps of lost churches before, but this the first where I've made the model myself from scratch, so I've spun out the animation (which takes the laptop I use 15 hours to render the 40-second sequence) into a long-form video, where I compare it the buildings I've stolen elements from. Started as a quick idea of doing like a pre-filmed stream, but then I've developed it in my usual way (putting silly noises on it). It's an experiment! I hope it's mildly entertaining!!
Been through the UA-cam generated captions now it's been uploaded, they should be readable, will correct them more later (I think the last time I uploaded a long-form narrated video - four years ago - we didn't have this?)

Screen recording with OBS Studio (did weigh down the laptop a fair bit hence why particularly the Washington sequence I struggle a bit to make Blender behave).
Video sequencing also done in Blender, which wasn't a great idea but whatever it wasn't that bad in the end. Will use a different program if I ever do anything like this again though.
All photos credited on-screen. If they're not credited I took them (unless I messed up).

Spacefleet Ecclesiastica: Cathedral Spires height comparison

well okay, not all cathedrals, but mostly churches, with a few surprises here and there. hi-res PNG of all the structures with caption text available by donation at my Ko-Fi! ko-fi.com/s/8e6a61d2fb blog post with some behind-the-scenes on how I put this together and its various issues of working out how exactly how high any building is. stainedglassattitudes.wordpress.com/?p=5506 my full versio...
Spacefleet Ecclesiastica: Cathedrals of Italy (and the basilicas of Rome)
Переглядів 5133 роки тому
This is a size comparison by sheer east-west length of all the Italian medieval cathedrals I could rip from Google Earth. In space, of course. Yes, the ones at the end are not cathedrals but WHO CARES By medieval cathedral, I mean a church built as a cathedral (bishop’s seat) in the sixteenth century or earlier, so some “Renaissance” buildings appear, but if it’s a total Baroque rebuild, I left...
Spacefleet Ecclesiastica: Cathedrals of France

For the locations of ALL the medieval cathedrals of France, and a bit of an overview, see this post of mine: stainedglassattitudes.wordpress.com/2020/10/25/spacefleet-ecclesiastica-kingdom-of-france/ This is my first-ever 3D animation, which uses models of all the cathedrals of France covered by Google Earth 3D accurately scaled over their groundplans, which I've been working toward for the pas...
Cattle Decapitation BRING BACK THE PLAGUE Acoustic Cover IN A GRAVEYARD
Переглядів 9054 роки тому
Bring Back The Plague was released online as a "lead single" of sorts by Metal Blade records on 3 October 2019, for Cattle Decapitation's highly-anticipated new album Death Atlas, which came out 29 November: all just around when the first cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Hubei province, China, which (of course) blew up into the long-feared global pandemic we find ourselves under now. Although...
Great Mistakes: Coventry's Lost Medieval Cathedral
Переглядів 23 тис.4 роки тому
You think you know Coventry's old cathedral? Think again! There was one that dwarfed the one you've taken photos of, but no one seems to talk about it! Monckton and Morris, British Archaeological Association Conference Transactions, Vol. 3...
Vault collapse at San Francesco, Assisi, 1997
Переглядів 151 тис.5 років тому
San Francesco in Assisi is an Italian Gothic building begun c.1228 and consecrated 1253. "The sequence of events for this seismic event is as follows: At about 2:30 AM, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit the basilica. Coincidentally, Ghigo Roli, a photographer who had been photographing the Upper Basilica’s frescoes for months, happened to be in the basilica during the event. In his testimony of th...
Putting the Notre Dame fire in context with Deutsche Welle
Переглядів 3755 років тому
On the morning after a fire destroyed the roof of Paris Cathedral, DW media contacted me on Twitter and I use it as an opportunity to try to explain the difference between a roof and a ceiling and why the building and much of its furnishings are basically okay. I was told to crowbar that about the Crown of Thorns in there, so that's why I kind of fluff the first question because I'm thinking mo...
IS Danny Dyer REALLY "directly descended" from Royalty?
Переглядів 2,5 тис.5 років тому
Spoiler: Yes, but you almost certainly are too. I've got my goats in such a twist over this silly premise of this new TV show that I watched all of Danny Dyer's Who Do You Think You Are? episode to see how they arrived at this silly "direct descendant of King Edward III" which is, as it happens, is almost certain for just about anybody with some English ancestry. I also make fun of Danny Dyer a...
Great Mistakes at Lincoln Cathedral
Переглядів 11 тис.6 років тому
Lincoln Cathedral is one of wonders of the pre-Modern world, even though it looks like it does largely because bits of it kept falling down: this video was similarly no mean feat to put together. There's loads of eccentricities and so much downright weirdness at this amazing building, and I tried to squeeze as many in as I could without it being a mere checklist of wonky arches. I also do an ap...

john the baptist church is where the saying "sent to coventry " comes from, you can go inside the whitefriars and the old grammer school on heritage weekendds
maybe it was the effect of the inter faith false ecumenism presided by "St Pope" John Paul II one of the fruits of the satanic teachings of the Conciliar Church of Vatican II

Has any archeology been done to see if any traces of burnt wood exist below the level of the stone? Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire would be an interesting virtual rebuild.
Should've mentioned it but the problem is the lady chapel was dug out for a retrofitted crypt (why you have all the walkways in today), almost certainly under Abbot Beere to try and recover the ground where Joseph of Arimathea walked. Ironically this potentially destroyed any archaeology of any timber post-holes etc of the Old Church. research.reading.ac.uk/glastonburyabbeyarchaeology/digital/the-lady-chapel-c-1185-1539/chapel-of-joseph-of-arimathea/
Most enjoyable and informative. I have known Glastonbury for many years and tried to imagine it on the eve of the Dissolution. Many thanks. PS How about Reading Abbey?
Reading is a great suggestion, so much I have already done one! But with someone else's model scaled as best I could (it doesn't fit exactly over the S transept remains). vimeo.com/728643883 I was thinking of recutting it for an upright UA-cam short but needs a bit of thought to keep the labels in frame. Really it should be made from scratch again but I'd rather try somewhere else.
In the early 80’s I lived in the Midlands for a few months before moving to Surrey. I had the oportunity to visit Coventry and admire, with great sadness, the ruins of the Gothic cathedral. There is a magnificent Gothic cathedral with remnants of the former main mosque in my hometown, Sevilla (Spain), and I’m very glad that it’s solid and standing.
I discovered your channel last year, binge watched all of your videos and feared you'd never post again. Happy to see you've returned ! With a great video also. (Also concerning the "car method" to scale G-Earth models, I'd be careful with those Washington cars... They've swollen significantly in the last decades)
yeah I did consider a "big American cars" joke there. Even if there is a limit how wide a car can be I think US ones can be wider. But it is funny when the mundane things tie up. The actual way I scaled it was by measuring the ridge of the high roof (136 m) then finding two points on the Glastonbury environs that are that length apart.
very glad to see you’re back
As time team dug it in 1999 its not missing
Why did the English have to build huge bell towers at the transepts of their cathedrals? the french were definetly smarter in designing their's.
Even the lousy builders which built my house did a somewhat better job at making less design mistakes.
My god... the modern architecture is horrific... what a loss.... why couldn't they try to rebuild it as it was....?
What a refreshing change to all those boring DIY history vids. I admire the skill of the medieval mason, but they still builders, just like those of today - short on money, short on time - take a shortcut.
My mum always grieved the loss of Coventry and it's medieval heart.
Coventry was heavily bombed in the Second World War.
The pain of explaining the difference between the roof and the ceiling to millions of noobs and making a slip up and calling the ceiling a roof. :) :-)
😲😲😲
Billy: "Hi God." God: "Hey Billy. That hurt."
OMG!!
I made my first visit to Coventry last week... I wish I'd seen this before I went. It is fascinating, and so well done.
And I bet they went back and prayed to hIm to save them
May God rest their souls and bless everyone Amen
Mi sembra ci fosse un servizio del tg1, comunque c era un giornalista dentro, ricordo quel terremoto facevo la prima media
It is really sad that they were trying to get out but just that part came down.
*Rest in Peace* to the 4 people that died in this collapse...
This is why you shouldn’t run outside during an earthquake until the shaking is over.
It's what I hoped would happen in Gothic Art 101 because I didn't study for the test.
As a young Franciscan Friar I spent the previous summer of 1996 in the Sacro Convento showing people around the basilicas, I knew the Novice Master killed in this video. Due to a complete lack of health and safety these people died.
I count more than 4 people under the direct area that couldn't have made it out in time before the collapse. It's amazing that 6 of them survived, I'm sure they had lung issues after inhaling all that debris.
That why i avoid churches....nothing ever good came out them😬😂
god is soooo awesome
Praise Satan😊
cringe
I've seen movie scenes of falling debris but this is nothing compared to that
I lived in the area. that day they took us out of school to do an outdoor lesson, it wasn't the first time I felt an earthquake, living on the top floor of a four-storey house felt even stronger than those who lived in smaller houses. but feeling the earth, a mountain to be precise, shaking like that... we were children, although it might seem funny some of us burst into tears and the sensation when the earthquake was over was really strange. the crazy thing is that to get us back to school the teacher made us cross an 80 meter high bridge, a Roman aqueduct. after the earthquake. absurd.
I never knew of this!
Fake
Try to search on Google "terremoto Italia 1997".
🤡
wait so rather than run away from the falling roof they ran inside it o.o
why does it feel unreal?
NOTRE DAME WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT
Either god made it happen... or god let it happen... or god didn't care if it happened... or god couldn't stop it from happening. The only one compatible with christianity is "god made it happen", so what is everyone so shocked about? I'm surprised people even rebuilt the church- god didn't want it there.
Vault/11
Why does it look like they are running in slow motion
Because the footage is slowed down, do 2x speed and you have real time speed.
The lord works in mysterious ways.
the fact that i had to check if this was real 😭
