Discounted Orchids -- Yesss!!!
So I went by the garden centre on the way home from work, and lo and behold, discounted orchids! So, even though I don't have room for them, I purchased some orchids... a familiar problem for the orchid-addicted.

    That blasted bug killed all my ORCHARDS. I didn’t know what they were. I was washing them off with water with a little bit of soap and I was wondering, do they fester or stay in the soil? Do you have to change that as well? These bugs are menace I’ve lost about 10 of my orchids and I used to recoup. They used to flower flower flower, every single one so I’m starting again and I’m watching videos like this because I have got one large piece plant a smaller peace plant a snake plant that’s new and a new orchid. My husband bought me. I don’t know a lot about plants but I’ve always been able to grow them, my mum said I had green fingers, but when I lost all my orchids, it broke my heart

    To help rebloom cyms in hot climates, water with very cold water late evenings in your summer time for 3-4 weeks. This helps set the bloom cycle up.

    The best thing to do to release the roots from any pot is to soak the whole thing in water for an hour. The water will soften up the vellium for an easier release so you're not breaking any pots or harming or ripping off the roots

    From reading iopse and looking at the plant, I think it would be fine in house conditions with high humidity. probably doesn't want to go over 80-83 at the max or below 55. Light like a phal, it probably wants to just approach dryness before watering again. Just treat it like a phal but err on the drier side just for safety and watch it. If it looses leaves from the base or starts wrinkling, it needs slightly more frequent watering (if the roots are good).

    Cold temps are for reblooming. You can keep them in the house no problem and leave them in front of an open window for temp drops later on. Who needs space anyway ;)

    Sweetheart, you potted that Cattleay at 11:35 backwards. The oldest growth (which in this case is the smallest) should be at the edge of the pot so the next pseudobulbs that come from the front (larger growth) of the plant have room to grow. The way this one is potted, the next lead that comes out won't have any room to grow. Also- most important thing ever- with sympodials- especailly sympodials, never repot until new roots are just beginning to grow from the base of the newest pseudobulb. That said, well done on pot size and depth! Also, an easier solution with mounted orchids- just slip them into a pot so they can stand up. If they need extra humidity, you can set them in a clay pot sitting in a saucer of water. That way the clay pot sucks up the moisture which evaporates around the plant and the plant isn't sitting in water and you don't have to mangle the roots in the process of removing it from the mount. Also, many times plants dont adjust well going from mounts to potted because the roots are essentially aerial roots and are physiologically different from those that form inside of a pot. Aerial roots generally rot when potted (another reason to only disturb roots when brand new ones are just forming from the lead.) Even though the existing roots may be branching, if the roots from the front have already grown an inch or more, it's best to wait until the next growth starts rooting.

    That may not have been disease on the encyclia. It could have been water on leaves causing sunburn, cold damage from cold water, though the darkness makes me think that mesophyll cell collapse is less likely. New growth is much more sensitive to things like that, so it's possible that an environmental factor like sunburn through water droplets or cold water could damage the new growth only. That said- If it was a disease, seeing how it looks and from what I've seen, those spots probably popped up in days as lighter brown areas that took a few days to blacken. Apparently you can paint clear nail polish over the spots and it won't spread and you get to keep the leaves. However, plants usually don't get infected by things unless they are stressed by some poor cultural condion. I've seen spots like that pop up quick on plants that were too warm. Dropping the night temps or day and night temps solved the problem pretty much immediately. The opposite, I'm sure could happen as well. A warm grower in conditions that are too cool can do the same thing. Also humidity that is too high at night with insufficient air movement will do it.

    • @zlibsworldoforchids4425
      @zlibsworldoforchids4425 7 років тому

      Orchideya - thanks for your comment! it depends on the size of the pot. In those small pots, I've found I've had to water every 2-3 days or so. It was almost like they were mounted, there was so little bark. now that they're repotted, I expect it'll be more like every 5 days. The clay does dry out pretty darn fast though. thanks again and happy growing!
