Getting Finley the Red Tailed Hawk ready for the 2024 Falconry Hunting season.
This will be Finley's 2nd hunting season with me. Finley is a female Red Tailed Hawk. I am flying her to the glove in her chamber (Mew) to get her ready for falconry this fall. This is her 2nd year. I have recovered from my heart attack in February for the most part and I am looking forward to flying Finley in her 2nd season. She is a supreme hunter and has a great temperament. She is very easy to work with.

Beautiful tail!
What magnificent looking red tail hawk buddy nice to know I'm not the only one with a brid late out the moult looking forward to seeing some great flights over the coming months Hope your feeling better now pal
@simonmee-x4e thanks for the well wishes! We're a bit little late coming out of the molt but down here in the southern us hunting season runs a little later than up north. The leaves are just now starting to turn
Cool, let's get this hawking season started.😎👍
@@oldschoolhawking8191 it's time to rock and roll
Almost!
I'll be looking forward to your adventures
Thank you Rick!
Great video. Falconry is so damn interesting. You said this was the 4th session of the day - how long is each session? How long do you wait between sessions? How do you know how many ounces of food to start with after trapping? I just wonder how you guess your baseline amount of food so you can increase or decrease weight as necessary. Are the first days mostly trial and error? You also mentioned Finn was fast to feed from the forceps - only 18 hrs seems amazing. What is a more typical time frame? What would be too long/too slow? Thanks in advance for any answers - just very curious about the whole process. Ill be sure to check out your other videos as well.
What an awesome video I just subscribed to I’m picking up my Hawk in the middle of next month and have been watching falconry videos nonstop I hope the manning process won’t take as long with my bird since he’s 19 years old and used to be used for educational presentations 😊
Enjoy it's a lot of fun
Nice VIC20s in the background
Haha good catch period - I'm into retrocomputing they are Commodore 64s
Bless your heart, literally.
Thank you
Are you able to plant quail and pheasants to work him in the summer?
That is a great question. We mostly hunt squirrels together so I probably won't bother with that but yes you can train a red tail to catch birds. Turn this summer he'll mostly just get to eat as much as he likes and molt his new feathers
looking forward to following videos on training and hunting the american kestrel good luck with your re-hab
Thank you
You were my intro into falconry, you,ll hunt again . Thanks
Thank you
Sorry to hear about your health issues. You'll be fine and as good as new. Look forward to your new adventure.
Thank you
hey do you have an email address and are willing to sponsor an apprentice
Looks like a fun day !
It was a blast! :-)
Good video!
Thanks!
Great video
Thank you
Dude seriously has mental issues yelling at squirrels let the firearm do the talking
Hah, yeah that would work. This form of hunting does not involve firearms, that is the role of the hawk. However, I do have a slingshot that I can use to try to get the squirrels to move around.
Looks like you had a great time.
It was a blast. :-)
cool
Yeah he is an incredible Hunter
He is very determined. Great job.
Thanks he is doing great!
Wow that is beautiful, miss ya and merry Christmas!
Hey ethan! Good to hear from you. Yes it's pretty beautiful down here with lots of trees
That looks like a great time.
We had a blast
Just curious, the weight loss ? Is that for easier flight/handling or a health issue?
It's a very small amount and makes them slightly hungry and provides food motivation that is used in training
Sick hunt!!! ❤
It was a fun time!
@@troytaylor623 I'm in Idaho taking my test January 18th 🤞
Good luck with your exam! I moved from Idaho to Oklahoma a couple of years ago. Everybody back in Idaho knows me for the most part
Very nice. Looking forward to see a flush and catch.
Amazing
That looks like a blast. Great job!
How old is the dog?
Otis is 5 years old. He has calmed down a lot from when he was a pup! :)
She’s a stunning looking Red
Well done you guys
There going to make a good team
Thanks! I agree
Well done both of you
Thank you!
Great video well done
Thanks!
What weight is Finley flying at , great video
Thanks. Finley flys between 980 and 1000 grams. He was trapped at 995g.
Mines flying on creance at the moment 2 lb 10-08 not sure if it large male or small female, do you know what sex Finley is yet, thanks
What do you take for parasites? Like for dogs? And how do you feed it with calcium?
I treat all the raptors I work with using Praziquantel and Pyrantel Pamoate. For calcium I ensure I feed them with whole prey including bone when their training is done.
@@troytaylor623 Thanks.
Cool video. Thanks for sharing. Based on you hand demonstration is seems you are misusing the word "dilated". Dilated = "become wider, larger, or more open".
good catch!
Thanks for the info .I tried the hood on my passage peregrine but it just doesn't like it at all! So no hood now.i think I broke the built up trust when I tried the hood as u had him coming to glove and feeding from it to zero after the hood so I had to start all over again but 3days after it he was back lol so now I won't teach with hood but I should I know.he has lived through fireworks and hand fed every day I have had him 7weeks.i am doing the same as what you said build the trust then work ,definitely right as I broke and he did nothing so I had to build all that again now better thank god even the lure but can't get him to Mann on glove for long unless he is eating he just goes mad the the upside-down squealing lol..
here's a funny thing...name of "Zubi" is cool...in Germany, "Azubi" is a kind of short name for an apprentice, or learning on the job person...good for a young hawk!
Thank you for this info! Very cool!
100% right about the biting. If it doesn't work they stop doing it.
Cool video! I am a first year apprentice and also a security engineer by trade.
Its a small world! :D
Did Kesi get you footed on your elbow? Whoops! You should have held that creanse tightly as she was bating!
That’s a hawk not a falcon. Doesn’t that make you a hooker not a falconer
Hey I’m on the process of becoming a falconer how long can inspection take
Hey Troy, just found your channel! Had fun trapping last week!-Nate R.
Thanks for your comment! Sounds like you're set to have some fun. :-)
Awesome job man! Looking good.
Thanks. He is coming along really well!
was waiting for a video.!!
My next one will be Finley flying free in a week or so.
hey your taking the hood of too soon give it ike 5 seconds after you open the braces so the bird docent get used to throwing the hood of and you hood is a bit small
Agreed
