Yanmar secret Oil change plug!
This video explains the oil access plug near the dipstick which can be used with an oil extractor to complete oil changes. This works on 4JH series engines, please comment if you find it on other Yanmar models.

Short sailing video of us trying out our new Top down furling, Helix Cruising Gennaker by North Sails. Music credit to @SickickMusic Absolutely awesome mix. I apologize for how dirty the boat is, I actually just filmed this to get a better perspective of the size of the sail on the boat. Then decided to do something with the footage. After viewing it I can also see the Main sheet could have bee...

Yanmar Hour meter repair & replacement

Video tutorial to repair the common issues with a (marine) yanmar LCD screen which stops showing a reading. I tried to cover both techniques available, cleaning the di-electric silicone as in my original video a few years ago, and a complete LCD replacement. I ordered a replacement LCD screen for £19.99 from them at www.akspeedo.com/vdo-lcd-repair.php I do not have any affiliations with Akspeed...

New screen works perfect. Best Tutorial! Thanks so much, Lucas. I´m from germany and bought the screen from AK Speedo/United Kingdom. Import costs 7€ plus.
Thank you! My new screen is shining bright!
I just bought this boat today. ❤
@@felonebike9859 Hey congrats! Very neat boats!
@@lucasspaniard8430 were very excited 😊 Thank you
Thanks so much for this excellent how-to. I tried the clean-up first but that didn't work, so I ordered the new display from Ali-Express. It was only $13 CDN all in and arrived at my home on Vancouver Island in only 10 days. It arrived from a Canadian shipping address so I am not sure if Ali Express has a warehouse in Canada, or if it was transhipped. All in all, great!
Thanks for that nice solution.
how is this not in the Yanmar manual?
Another grateful viewer. Thank you.
Thank you Lucas. For clarity, once you takeout the plug, does the oil come out with gravity and fill the pan placed below the engine?
No it won’t, you still need to use some sort of oil vacuum pump. It just gives you better access to the bottom of the oil pan.
That C&C is fast! Beautiful footage. Do you drop the sails when it’s time to bring the drone back?
Have yet to drop the sails to retrieve the drone. Usually just heading dead down wind brings down the apparent wind to almost nothing, and makes catching it off the stern somewhat simple.
Best yourtube repair video ever. Seriously. Well done!
Thank you!!
Beautiful video. Need to get a drone operator ;)
As everyone else has said this is just the best how to video! Great detail shots and perfect descriptions. Thanks for making this such an easy project!
Wow! Thanks! For the first oil change on our new 4JH57 I tried the dipstick tube like on our previous Yammer and on this engine could only suck out about one quart (and tried this method according to the Yanmar manual. HA!) After searching all around the engine for a better option, I turned to "Doctor Google" and found this UA-cam post. Thanks, dude! Happy sailing!
Thanks, great clear instructions. Well done. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much ⛵️🥂
IMPORTANT!!! This plug deforms after a certain time (ppl say 3 years), and no longer stays in place (I think rubber shrinks). A working engine may spit it out followed by spitting out oil, making a total mess out of engine compartment, then you have to fish out the plug and put it back in (or make a DYI plug). $10 part, replace every 3 years or whenever works for you.
Very straightforward. Replaced both LCDs on our Lagoon 440. Thanks!
That is awesome! Glad it worked out!
Brilliant! My hour meter now works but my rpm’s are off. Do I need to go back in and adjust the needle?
Hey awesome, see where the needle rests when the engine is off. You may need to adjust it, if so skip to 12:17
Hey Thanks for the message, I am not sure where you can purchase the outside plastic cover for the instrument if that is what you were asking.
Mate thank you so much for this vid - saved me hours of heartache 👍
Thank you so much! I had the same problem and it is fixed now🎉. The video is easy to follow. Thanks also for the source for the LCD. I of course, like that it was cheap, but it was even more important for me, that it did not lose the motor hours.
Awesome Buddy! Glad it is back working!
Good video, just ordered a replacement screen, after just removing my screen . I hope this is the problem, my Alt. Wire had 8 volts when tested, screen not lighting or reading at all.
This is one of the best tutorials I have experienced on UA-cam. I used each of Luca's detailed references and instructions to replace my LCD hour display on my boats Yanmar instrument display. The entire process took less than 10 minutes & was made easy because of this video. Thank you Lucas, great job and I am grateful.
Hey Dan, I am glad it worked out for you! Thanks for the kind words!
Just completed this replacement using your tutorial. Works perfect, thank you so much for taking the time!
Hi Paul, glad it worked out for you!
It worked like a charm! Thank you!
Good job 👏

Wow! Very impressive videography!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
in my case the numbers are visible, but almost erased.
Hola Jose, same repair can be done. Or you could try remove some of the silicone, as seen in this video. ua-cam.com/video/eldRUU7qc2Y/v-deo.html
@@lucasspaniard8430 Muchas gracias por tu consejo, Lucas. Un gran saludo
@@jomaflor2 de nada, es un placer poder ayudar con esto!
Solid instructional video. But: what are the specs / part nrs of the little LCD? I need to order it before starting to taking the meter apart.
Hi Sam, if you look in the video description, you will see a link for one option for buying the LCD. (the one I used) But you can search yanmar . volvo VDO LCD and find other options.
Beautiful video, a couple of the shots are top shelf. But the Gennaker looks small, what wind ranges are you using it in? You should talk to North Sails about that!
Lucas. Did the repair in November 2022 and it was EXACTLY as you described :) Thanks so much. MaddLiner II Vanvouer BC
This is an ecellent repair tutorial. It was really easy to follow the steps. Thank you so much.

Thanks John. It takes a bit of work, but it is so nice when you can narrow the scope to just the task no distractions. Thanks for noticing every point!
How can i buy new lcd?
check the video description.
This video was much more specific than the first one. And every detail that may cause an issue was explained properly. Well made video. I did swap my LCD yesterday, and one of the transparent clips for the standoff legs broke off. It does not worry me much, but you should consider not removing the clear plastic part when swapping the LCD as there is a chance that the clips may break. My RPM/hour display was manufactured in 2009.
thanks for the feed back. I wonder if your plastic was just older and dried out. I took mine off several times with no issues, but you definitely don't have to take them off.
This is amazing! We’re getting ready to sell our boat and have dealt with a broken counter for about 14 months now. Now I have the confidence to fix it so we can list with correct engine hours versus our estimation :) Thank you!!
Thank you for posting. I nearly did not buy my boat because the the seller could not confirm the engine hours. I had a mechanic inspect and check the engine and I took the risk. Now I have new LCDs thanks to your post. To say that I am very happy with the outcome is an understatement. I was pleasantly surprised at how low the actual hours are, so bonus!
Your video has given me the confidence to tackle the repair of my VDO, thank you.
My flat cable has a gum yellow. Have you heard about it? I am afraid to try to take out and destroy the circuit
This sounds like what I mention at 6:50 in the video?
@@lucasspaniard8430 exactly. Have you heard a way to take this "yellow glue"?
@@vergrupos just pick away at it with a small flat head screwdriver, etc. Ruby Rose did a video on this around 5:14 mark. ua-cam.com/video/EJZvffftV1o/v-deo.html
Thanx. It seams hard and dangerous to remove
Thank you SO much for this video, you rock!
Great video! Thank you for the detailed look. I got a replacement display from Amazon and then swapped the displays in less than half an hour, for my 2006 Beneteau. The old display looked pristine with no noticeable corrosion. Lifting the old display from the left cracked the right side; but it was trash anyway. Before I started I measured the voltage with my autoranging meter but could not get a reliable DC voltage at the terminals, probably due to the very noisy alternator power. It did read 7.4 Vrms AC, which indicated some power connection; this proved to be sufficient.
Good work! In my old video I talked about checking the voltages. Glad you got it working👍🏻
Outstanding video. The attention to detail and explanations are first rate. I have the part on order...
Thanks Peter, I hope it goes smoothly for you!
Can you tell me what the LCD part is called so I can order it and from where?
Hi Rich, it is in the video description. You can purchase it several places, but this is where I purchased mine. www.akspeedo.com/vdo-lcd-repair.php
I have one .it's a 1981 owned it for 15 years and it sails so very well. Love it would have no other.
Very cool, bold statement though, there is a lot of boats out there! lol
Hi Lucas great video, my Vdo tacho with faulty hour lcd has a much thicker plastic rim once the meter is out of the case. Is this something you have seen? I’m having trouble getting it apart Regards Geoff
Hi Geoff. I really don't have much experience except with my yanmar display and owners who have watched this video reaching out. you are talking about one of the plastic covers? or the black trim piece?
This is a great repair tutorial.
Thanks Reed I appreciate that!
Is it available for rent? How much the rent will?
Great job just finished putting the new display on using your instructions. I chipped the old display getting it out too.
Hey thanks for the comment. Everything is functioning and good to go? What vessel do you have? Merry Christmas!
Ordered a new screen out of china on ebay, watched this video while I dismantled my Hunter 38 display, did exactly what he said and it worked perfectly!! Thanks so much for posting this. Very satisfying as you say. Cheers.
Hi Bruce, awesome to hear it went smoothly. Where roughtly are you located? Merry Christmas buddy!
@@lucasspaniard8430 I'm on Vancouver Island BC Canada. The previous owner had been recording hours since the screen went out in 2013, and it was only 4 hours off when I got the new screen installed. Pretty good record keeping all those years. Merry Christmas to you!
