    This sounds lovely. I'm a dog person but I love all animals. My dog, Stanley, drives me insane on a regular basis but he brings so much joy. I didn't used to like short story collections but I do now. I'm reading one at the moment - Murder in the Falling Snow. @@TheHonestBookReviewer I did! The good Mr. Koontz could have given us more of the entity manifestation that ripped the caretaker out of his truck as that was nicely monstrous. The villain overall reminded me a little of the one in Phantoms (not a bad thing). I really like how Koontz writes in the style of a given character's thinking, which changes from character to character. I can't be the only one who thinks we need to see more of Mr. Patel.

    Hello! I have read it in Russian, and really liked everything about the book:the plot, the characters, time slip. I want to ask the words Sarah as her panic grew, hear when her daughter is missing and Martin shouting her name "Gerthie!Gerthie!Gerthie!" she hears other words and his voice is getting distorted. So I need the words she heard instead of Gerthie. Approximately at 67th page. Sorry for my bad English, I really need it please!!

    I like the idea of a way of getting fiction that may otherwise not get so much attention, literary fiction, get them seen more widely. But its a little like the Oscars. They reward good movies, but very often they neglect the truly great movies of that year. I also think there may be biases in selection. Without wanting to be too political, the prize may pander to the worldview of the London literary world which is broadly speaking very liberal and has a kind of status seeking quality to it. Now I'm a liberal minded person myself but I remember reading a chairwoman of the Booker saying that the aim of literature should be semi didactic, about moral improvement and understanding and tolerance. All of those things are good things to aspire to. But then it becomes subjective as to how a novel does that. And why should a novel have to do that, or be subject to that expectation. Having said that, I do like all efforts to promote literary fiction and reward writers who challenge forms and who write about stuff that lies outside genre conventions

    • @TheHonestBookReviewer
      @TheHonestBookReviewer Місяць тому

      Thank you for the comment. Your point about possible selection bias is valid, and I think is a potential risk in many book prizes. The one thing I didn't mention in the video is that I still believe judges can request a book be submitted for consideration as well, which adds a new level of potential bias. The one thing that may mitigate bias is that there must be consensus to what is selected for the longlist, shortlist, and winning book. But like you've mentioned, that introduces other problems because some.books may more easily be selected by consensus. Maybe having a new judging panel each year helps with this.

  • @TheHonestBookReviewer
    @TheHonestBookReviewer Місяць тому

    Very late in releasing this video, but I guess better late than never! 😀 Characters can sometimes make or break a book. In this video, I discuss some characters I adored from books read this year. Hope you enjoy it!

  • @TheHelican
    @TheHelican Місяць тому

    Interesting discussion! I think you make an interesting point about the judging panel being different each year. When i think of the booker prize, I do think of it as having a 'house style'. But it can't, really, if there's no consistency in the judging panel. The women's prize in the UK is an interesting comparison where the chair if the judging panel is always the same - Kate Moss, the prize's founder - but the other judges change. I will say, as a reader who likes literary and genre fiction, I do pay attention to the Booker lists, and it definitely does spur me to pick up books I might not have considered otherwise. I like having the prize, though sometimes the faff around it can feel elitist.

    • @TheHonestBookReviewer
      @TheHonestBookReviewer Місяць тому

      I don't know a lot about the Women's Prize in the UK, but I'll definitely look it up. I'm planning to have a closer look at various prizes. I think with the same person as the chair there would be more chance of that house style approach you've mentioned. Maybe that's one of the positives of prizes like the Booker. Thanks for watching.

  • @pickyourpopculturepoison
    @pickyourpopculturepoison Місяць тому

    I don’t know if any awards are relevant. I do love literary fiction but it doesn’t necessarily change my reading. It does, on the other hand, expose me to litfic, which doesn’t exactly get the marketing dollars genre fiction does.

    • @TheHonestBookReviewer
      @TheHonestBookReviewer Місяць тому

      Literary fiction definitely is the loser in marketing dollars most of the time. I think award winning books probably get a boost, maybe even shortlisted books, but definitely as a rule genre fiction attracts most marketing dollars. Maybe we can lose sight that books are a business. I know I don't always think about that when I'm reading a book - I just want to read.

  • @helenclare3250
    @helenclare3250 Місяць тому

    Interesting video. The Booker is highly regarded here in the UK. I quite enjoy seeing what makes the longlist then the shortlist. When it is analysed though, it does make me wonder how valid it all is with the criteria given. I believe the judges should all be experts in the industry. Books are so subjective anyway.

    • @TheHonestBookReviewer
      @TheHonestBookReviewer Місяць тому

      Thank you. Yes, judging books is very subjective, I feel. I definitely found the submission and review process to get to the shortlist interesting. I don't know what I'll discover when I try to delve into other book prizes. But when I take a step back and look at the Booker Prize, I do feel there's an imbalance that favours big publishers. Still, they seem to change rules every now and then, so maybe something will change in the future.

  • @TheHonestBookReviewer
    @TheHonestBookReviewer Місяць тому

    What is the submission process and is it fair? How are books longlisted and shortlisted? Is the Booker Prize still relevant today and should we care about it? Hope you like this - and I'm hoping to produce similar videos on other book prizes.

    Spoilers / extremely long rant but i JUST finished this book so Ill shout this into the wind:😊 Wilder finding Harper and Nat in the woods, the realization that he broke the promise, it all felt so real. I could feel his pain and shame and it was the first whispers of how he was just "the other one that tagged along" in the group. But then he is made out to be the pivotal character and the main focus of the story, only to get killed off in so many different ways that when we finally found out how he really went I was speechlessly disappointed. I cant imagine the conniving, witty and sometimes wicked Harper being someone who would accidentally slit someones wrist. Theres no way I can imagine in my head that event happening the way it was described. Nor can I imagine Harper being able to convince the police that it was suicide. The main issue, the one I cant get over, is how the story blurred the lines of reality to the point of requiring you to go back and mark off half of the chapters you enjoyed as not even being real within the story. I know it is all fiction, but it cheapens it all so much to portray the moments that meant a lot to me in the book as a cheap made up fantasy of a horrible person. I love Catriona Wards writing style but this book just felt into a knotted pile of rope at the end. The way it finished felt like someone got tired of unknotting it and cut the rope to spare themselves the hassle of bringing it all together. I would have loved if Harper went mad trying to put Wilder and Nat into Pearls story to give them the lives she thinks they deserved. I would have loved if she just broke down in front of the magic after all her work and nothing happened. That would have humanized her, but no, we were left with a secondary cast of characters we dont know fighting and getting hysterical in a situation we were just tossed into, right after falling in love with characters thar just drifted away from us, never to be seen again. The ending we got felt like a cliffhanger from part 1 of a goosebumps story. I was going to go straight into the last house on needless street but now I feel like I want a break from her books. Would love some recommendations of atmospheric 80s horror you mentioned! Ps very good video, its hard to find someone doing book reviews that i can actually imagine myself enjoying the company of, looking forward to watching more from you

    Just read this novel! You got your review exactly right. This novel got me through a nasty 3 day extreme heat event. I never heard of Cherie Priest but I will be reading more from this author! This story is imaginative and original and, as you pointed out, the characters are perfectly drawn at each age.I don't want to say too much about the ending because I don't want to give anything away . I will just say that this novel is a wild ride and a fun read!

      That's such a good plan to read from your own shelves. I'd planned to do more of that this year and I've failed miserably. I think I've read maybe 6 to 10 books only from my shelves. It's something I need to improve on. But our library service has so many books I want to read. It makes it difficult to be disciplined.
