The dos and don’ts of watering succulents
Here I discuss what you should and should not consider when watering succulents. Overwatering is probably the most common way to kill succulents so I thought a comprehensive video on watering would be helpful.

Here I discuss features of dragon fruit cactus and compare them to similar cacti - the barbed wire cactus (Acanthocereus tetragonus) and dogtail cactus (Strophocactus testudo). The baby dragon fruit cacti I show are the white-fleshed pitaya (Selenicereus undatus, formerly Hylocereus undatus) and the large dragon fruit cactus I am planting is the Natural Mystic hybrid (polyrhizus x undatus). Best tip I have is to put the sun rose cuttings in water with a pothos cutting! The roots will grow like crazy from the pothos hormones :) such a beautiful plant
I’ve never done this! I’ll have to try it! Thank you for the tip 😊
How do you know which is male and female?
Hi! Each has male (stamen, anther) and female parts (ovary, pistol, stigma). I usually use the flowers that have been opened for a few days as the female parent and the flowers that just open as the male parent. Hope that helps!
@@succulentschool Much appreciated! I want to try this out because some of the Haworthia's we have are starting to push out flowers.
Wait you skipped a step why are they on that paper towel and how did some have the white “root starter” after I cut from the donor what do I do
Hi! They were all leaves that had fallen off one of my plants. So I just collected them and set them on soil. Some had already started to grow on their own since they had fallen a while ago. I didn't do anything else to them other than misting the roots when they started. Hope that helps!
Very cool! I inherited a peanut cactus and with zero explanation I'm going to do exactly what I just saw in your video and I think because of some other research I did, my peanut cactuses are being overwatered. Some of their are very spongy and turning purple-ish red in the middle. I have them by other plants and they inadvertently have been getting way too much water I believe. But thank you for your video
Hi! Thanks for your comment! Mine also turn purple/red when they are in full sun! Good call on the watering - if they are soft and squishy they are rotting. Infrequent watering is best for them, although if you live in a hot environment or they aren't planted in a lot of soil (where it won't retain much water), they can handle more.
Love this video. Easy to understand and informative. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the feedback! Glad it was helpful! 😊
Thank you for this video! My son bought me an elephant bush just because. I have never seen one before, don't know anything about it. Mine has thin, stringy vines growing off of it that grow super long. Every picture I have ever seen does not have them, including yours. Did your plant have them or did you cut them off? When my son brought this plant to me the vines were hanging down past the pot and it looked really neat and exotic and hairy lol but it seems like they would just choke the plant. And also the pot that it came in is not a draining pot. Can't believe they sold it that way. So when should I transfer it to another pot? I'm afraid to stress it. Honestly I'm just afraid of this plant period lol. Any help is much appreciated 🙂❤
Hi! I’ve never seen any with vines attached. Maybe another plant starting growing with it and the roots intertwined? Or it’s possible that they are aerial roots! Don’t be afraid to repot - they bounce back! Repotting can help you figure out what the vines are too 😊
@succulentschool They are definitely aerial roots and I just found out that it is not an elephant bush it's a dwarf jade tree. The app that I used to identify it said it was an elephant bush. It's still in the same class though but they look so so similar. I can see how the app got it wrong. But your video still helped me to learn how to trim it's branches. But now I know that it's searching for sun or water when it grows aerial roots. That is so awesome! 😃
@@sum1pooted Dwarf jade is another name for elephant bush! (Super confusing, I know!) Is it Crassula ovata (jade)? Aerial roots are more common with those!
@@succulentschool Yeah that's the one! 😁
Hi there, North Floridian here. I start lots of dragon fruit from store bought dragon fruit. I was wondering where you got your dragon fruit from., what a nice size!!! Wishing you lots& lots of flowers&fruit.
Thank you! This one was a big box clearance rack find but I’ve gotten some from local nurseries too. It’s grown so much already. I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy more 😅
This was so incredibly helpful - I loved how you talked through the process and showed the one month update! I have the variegated (much smaller) version of the p. afra and was wondering if I can propagate an entire larger branch that already has bark on it. Your video was exactly what I was looking for - thank you! :)
This comment brings me joy! Thank you so much for the feedback! I try to always make videos how I would enjoy watching them 😊 Yes, I have had success propagating both large and small branches. Best results with water propagation too. Good luck!
Great information! Thank you for these tips!
Thank youuu ❤️
This video was super helpful! I have a dragon fruit cactus thats growing like crazy and i love seeing all the babies its producing. One thing I notice on my planted dragonfruit cactus, is random spots were roots shoot out from. Like from the top or side of the cactus. Should I be snipping those or doing anything with those?
Thank you! Yes, so many aerial roots! Just leave them - they send them out to get more moisture from the air and to grab onto things for support 😊
Can we propagate it in summers like now a days, its very humid these days
Thanks for the question! Yes, I’ve had the most success rooting in spring and summer. Just keep them out of direct sun when rooting!
After you put them in soil where did you place the to give them time to grow ?
Thanks for the question! I keep them outdoors when rooting but out of direct sun.
Thank you
A bit of helpful info, but way toooo much unnecessary talking....🤦♀️
Well, I’m glad it was a little bit helpful! Sometimes I talk throughout the video, and sometimes I play music. I try to vary since I have subscribers who prefer both ways.
TY so much❤ this is exactly what's wrong with mine. I really appreciate that you did not add the annoying background music. Everyone does that & it's impossible for me anyway to watch those. This was right to the point & concise. Awesome video, thanks again!
Thank you for this feedback! Admittedly, I use background music sometimes when I run out of things to say, but I'm glad I didn't on this one! I hope you are able to save your plant! 🪴
Amazing , treat for the eyes ❤️
Very nice. I'm getting mine to thrive a bit now
can this be done with any type of soil?
Hello! Thanks for the question! I would avoid regular potting soil since it holds too much water. Anything that drains well should work fine. If you only have regular soil, add pumice or perlite to it and it should be OK!
I am glad that you were able to save them!!!
Thanks! Me too!!
Hi, How are they doing on the ground? How did you prepare the soil?
Hi! Thanks for the questions! I have them in the soil in a few places around my house and they seem to be doing well! I usually just loosen up the soil when I'm planting and surround the plant roots with cactus soil. They seem to do pretty well without any prep too though!
Hi, do you have a greenhouse? Here is raining a lot here day, and I have lost some of them!
Sorry to hear - I've lost a few to rain too, usually little ones in pots that were too big. I don't have a greenhouse, but I have a screened-in patio where I keep most of my potted succulents so they can't get too much rain. All the ones in the ground here seem to do well too but I usually don't move them to the ground until they get pretty big.
What a great idea for something you can do with your children!!!
She was very excited about it 🥰
Thanks for this! I've already twice successfully propagates the baby sun rose using off the shelf cacti soil, but failed once. Greetings from Southeastern Europe!
Thanks for the comment! I always get some that fail too - it's a part of the game! :)
Can you name them in your comments or on the videos, please?
Sure! Tiger tooth aloe (aloe juvenna) 😊
Why do you seperate it from the root stock
Thanks for the question! I prefer the look of it without the rootstock. Plus I have gotten a bunch of baby dragonfruit cacti that grew off the rootstock once I separated them. People would also want to remove it if the rootstock was damaged/dying.
I'm doing it because my rootstakc began to rot (I genuinely don't understand how as i water it like once every 6 months
how to water a pvc moss pole?? run water down the center? 😊
Depends on the type! In this case, I just use the spray nozzle of the hose to wet the moss. If there is no pole through the middle, running water down the center is best!
Are these the same variety or different one. My elephant ear plant is in a 14 inch planter but the height is like your small plant.
All the same! They were here when I bought my house but got huge when I cleared the surrounding bushes and they got more sun. Now I can’t get them to stop multiplying! 😅
Thank you
Of course! Thanks for watching! 😊
After they bloom, should you cut off the line tendrils?
Hello! Thanks for the question! I usually cut them after the bloom when they start to look dried and ugly and I can be sure that there is no seed pod. Some people cut off the blooms even before flowering to direct more energy to the plant vs. the bloom (I don't!) The stalks will just dry out and fall off eventually on their own so no real need to though. Happy planting!
@@succulentschool thanks for your response! Mine have had the long stalks with the flower buds for over like 6 weeks now, but they still haven't opened, so I'm thinking of just cutting them off at this point. It's a very very small little bundle of about 7 succulents, but each has a flower stem that's almost 8 inches long, so probably tons of energy is going into them.
@@bridgiesue7 If the plants still look good, I would keep them! You probably have another week or so to go. They take awhile for the bloom to actually open 😅
tete 4.30pm I will 4.30pm to do
what is grafting exctly just recently bought one
Hello! Thank you for the question! Grafting is just joining two plants together so they can continue growing in an advantageous way (rootstock is the bottom portion, scion is the top). The rootstock is usually a more stable plant with strong roots compared to the scion. In the case of moon cactus, most variants lack chlorophyll (the red, orange, and yellow ones) so they cannot survive on their own. They use the chlorophyll production of the rootstock to survive. Hope that helps!
Super 👌👌
Thank you!! 😊
Was the soil you put these in wet or dry?
Hello! Thanks for the question! Always dry soil so the leaves don’t rot! I only start watering when I see roots. Hope that helps!
@@succulentschool Thanks.
❤ LOVELY ORCHID ❤ I love Orchid but it's hard for me to grow them :
Thank you! I was like that for a while too, but mine have been doing really well outside! I've actually started attaching them to my trees and only watering them (spraying the roots) when it hasn't rained in a long time.

Es medicinal no tóxico, como todas las plantas tiene principios activos y lógicamente si te comes l a planta entera sí k será tóxico. Un par de hojas al día se pueden consumir sin riesgo.
Thank you for your comment! I have also heard of/researched the medicinal uses of the plant but also found that (human) consumption is risky, as different parts of the plant contain more toxins (ex. the flowers) and the level of the toxic steroids can be different based on a number of factors. Do you use it personally for medicinal use? I have seen most information about its use on the body (ex. wounds) and less about consumption of leaves. I would be interested to know more!
Omg your kiddo is so cute but also this video is also very helpful and informative and concise. Happy Mother’s Day!
Do you recommend succulent fertilizer or bonsai fertilizer for p. Afria?
Thank you! You too!
Honestly I haven't used fertilizer and they seem to be growing well, some for about 2 years. I will sometimes add some coffee grounds if I haven't repotted in awhile. I've heard good things about Cactus Juice but haven't tried it yet!
I was gifted some cutting from a cactus that looks like this. How do I plant/ take care of them? Thank you in advance!
Hello! Thanks for the question! I have found that they root very easily. I have made a few videos that might be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/3B_4DAlYaH8/v-deo.html (this one is specifically about propagation by cutting) ua-cam.com/video/c_8vQ1mzqAU/v-deo.html (this one is about repotting) ua-cam.com/video/l62eQTOeLfM/v-deo.html (this one is about water propagation) Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
Hi! I just came across this video and I see you have the Ice City. i’m currently obsessed with it and can’t find any videos that talk about it. i can’t find it in nurseries, online stores, succulent shows, etc…. is it a rare succulent or just not that popular? Adorable kids btw.
Hi! Thank you! Yes, the haworthia Ice City is one of my favorites too! I found it at a local nursery by me (south Florida) and I was surprised because I hadn't seen it anywhere either. Since then I've seen some on Etsy but it doesn't seen to be too common. I know that it is a variant of the Pygmaea and it seems to be a slow grower...which is probably why they aren't so common!
Hello. Hope I dont sound stupid? Is this a dragon fruit?
Hi! Thank you for the question! Dragon fruit is Selenicereus undatus and this cactus is Acanthocereus. There are definitely some similarities in how they look, especially when they are babies but there are clear differences in the spine (thorn) size - both length and width - and the shape and number of the ribs (dragonfruit ribs have more pronounced waves). Hope that helps!
@@succulentschool Oh boy lol I love dragon fruit and was driving down the road amd someone cut one of these huge cactus so I brought some cuttings home about 3-4 feet long and put them large buckets of water and they are growing and rooting in the water.Thought I had dragon fruit. I guess I have some decisions to make lol Thank you for help and knowledge. Do they have any value?
@@rpfl5586 That's an exciting find! The blooms are pretty in the summer but they only last for one night. I haven't seen them sold in any stores but I'm sure people would want to buy them if you didn't want to plant a patch!
I appreciate the info. I have to say that you have one of the worst cases of vocal fry that I’ve ever heard. At certain times, it sounded like you were literally growling. I don’t know how many videos you have on your channel, but I suggest you think about how your voice sounds to the listener. I had to mute the sound about half way into the vid.
I appreciate the feedback. I utilize subtitles for those who have difficulty with any audio aspect of my videos, so I would suggest that for anyone who has difficulty hearing the sound of my voice.

What does cinnamon do to the succulents? And did you put just regular cinnamon used for baking? Thanks
Thank you for the question! Cinnamon (the regular baking kind) has antifungal properties so it can help the plant to root more quickly. I have even found it to work better than store-bought rooting hormone so I use it on all my succulent cuttings!
Thanks for the video and ID. I just bought one of these because it looked so different. I knew it was something in the Snake plant realm.
Glad it could help! Thank you for watching 😊
How soon after you put the cuttings down into the dirt do you water them
Thanks for the question! I try not to water until I know roots have formed (to prevent rot) so I usually wait 2-3 weeks or so
What is the age of the mother?
I'm not sure since it was here when I moved in two years ago. I know the previous owner moved in the late 70s and much of the foliage was planted then so it's possible that it is 30+ years old
@@succulentschool Ah OK thanks! I love it ❤️❤️❤️
