240VAC to 5VDC converter tear-down with circuit and THX208 analysis
May interest someone (besides me). Warning capacitor C1 has 340V across and can give a nasty shock a long time after the mains voltage is removed. This 240VAC to 5VDC converter board stopped working. Created circuit diagram to try and find the fault. [Diode D6 should be on the purple track just above D5 pointing in the same direction]. Initially C1 didn't have the 340V I expected so the bridge rectifier was suspected. Diode bridge was removed (looked like it had a dry joint), but tested OK. After the was replaced the capacitor had the expected 340V on it. Couldn’t find the reason the board failed so assumed the THX208 control chip was at fault. Could only find a Chinese Data sheet for the THX208 so used the block diagram and wave diagram to try to explain how it worked

After trawling the internet I've recorded some ideas for replacing a locked Dyson vac battery (red flashing LED). Possibly due to unbalanced cells. Buy a genuine Dyson battery (safest & best option in my opinion) . Buy a copy initially cheaper but may not last many months & may not be stated capacity. Buy an adaptor for a power tool battery. but makes it bumbly & needs to be charged by tools ch...
3D printed Geneva mechanism with motor & 3.6V 555 timer.

This 'print in place' Lego compatible Geneva mechanism broke when being removed from the bed and so was given to me. I fixed the broken shaft but couldn't easily attach Lego motor so used a small lock motor. I wanted it to work on a discarded vape cell and so used a CMOS 555 timer and a 3V relay so it draws no current until switched on.
MSF UK Radio Clock Mechanism tear-down.

Bought this clock mechanism which is set by the MSF radio signal from the UK atomic clock. I didn't remove the locking pin and thought I'd broken it, so decided to pull it apart. The 3 plastic case pieces are held together with difficult to separate tabs. 3 screws hold the PCB in, and it has 6 wires, 4 to the motors and 2 to an unknown component, these needed freeing before PCB removal. I didn'...
Replace 12V A24 meter battery with 3 lithium cells.

When I go away I take a portable meter powered by 12V. Unfortunately it has no auto-cutoff so each time I try to use the meter the battery is dead. Removing the battery after each use would work, but I decided to replace the 12V alkaline with 3 rechargeable lithium cells. This involved cutting away the old battery holder and moving the meter leads exit point. I also made a plug from 0.1 inch co...
Faulty 1960's 6 speed Meccano motor teardown

With 6 selectable gear ratios this is a versatile 3V - 12V motor. Unfortunately the 60:1 gear ratio torque is too large for the gears, resulting in a broken tooth. There is little point in replacing this without some form of clutch mechanism to to stop it happening again. The other ratios seem OK although I haven't tried stalling them.

Kitchen scale repair and teardown with some circuit details

The circuit had lots of test points so although I haven't investigated them the bits of circuit I have drawn could hopefully ...
Replacing a meters 12V battery with 3 disposable vape cells.

Found my capacitor meters' 12 V battery to be flat. Thought I had a spare but that also was flat. So I could use the meter I connected 3 vapes cells (each with a protection circuit) in series. When needed I will charge each cell individually. These cells can be dangerous so please don't do this if you aren't sure. As they didn't fit in the case I secured them on its' back.

Vape electronics revisited
Переглядів 443Рік тому
After finding a vape with a blue flashing LED, measurements are made to determine just how the vape works. The heating coil has a resistance of ~1.5 Ohms and is ~6 watts and will only stay on for ~10 seconds. A capacitor is used to show that the LED flashes and the output won’t switch on when the supply voltage is less than 3V2. The same capacitor is used to show in real time that charging stop...

Previous video used 2mm diameter copper discs to extend the carbon brushes but the commutator was damaged and so it didn't always start. An attempt was made to repair it using sticky back copper foil (not plastic!) but that failed due to glue problems and trying to solder to the thin copper. This video shows how the engine could be rebuilt.

I need to reconnect the little box with the red and black wires attached to it. It has a hook on the end of the box like it is supposed to hold onto something. What does it hold onto and where do I find it.
Sorry but I can't find a little box with red & black wires. I may be able to help you if you can identify your part on the video. At the start of the video (3 sec in) you can see all the bits. On the left 2 red wires come from the stop switch. These go to the voltage selection switch (hanging over the back on the video) the switch just in front is to detect if the mechanism is on the box. In front of that is the main circuit board. Motor wires come from the voltage selection switch and main PCB.Hope this helps.
Can i replace mcr72 with bt151?
Sorry, but I don' have this knowledge.
Thanks for the talk through. Just for reference, when I am looking at Chinese data sheets I have used Yandex Translate, an online utility, which will translate text for you directly off images and displays it in context for you. I am sure there are other sites that do it, I just Googled it when I needed it and Yandex popped up and did the job, so I was happy.
Lithium cells need to be treated with respect but you are far too afraid of them and exaggerating the danger, they are not desperate to catch fire at any opportunity. Also, it makes no difference what 'Charger' you use, what you plug in the wall is nothing more than a power supply, it does not handle the charging, the BMS on the pack does.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I don't think the dangers of the battery removed from it's case can be exaggerated. I would feel most upset if someone were to hurt themselves after watching the video. (I almost didn't post it for that reason.) Maybe I should have emphasised more the dangers of a short circuit. In the video I refer to someone who shorted something on the BMS board and the SMD components got so hot they could be removed from the board. As careful as I am, I have managed to short circuit a cell from a discarded vape resulting in the plastic melting and the wires getting red hot but I don't think the cell was damaged.
The actual dyson battery packs management board has programming pins on it to program some sort of firmware onto it, so the micro controller on the board can monitor each of the cells and charge cycles, if any battery cell is out of spec, It will lock the battery pack out and write the lock out information to its internal eeprom.
Thanks for the comment.
Dont buy anything Dyson or Apple because they are both vastly overpriced and repair protected products.
This is such a helpful breakdown of the options for dealing with a locked Dyson vacuum battery! I really appreciate the effort you put into researching and explaining each approach. Your advice about safety, especially regarding the original battery case, is so practical and important. Thanks for sharing these insights-it’s clear you’ve thought this through carefully. This will definitely help others facing the same issue.
Thanks for the positive comment it makes producing the .video worthwhile.

Thanks for the comment. Glad to hear your purchase was a good one. I only seem to have picked up the negative comments about replacement batteries from the net . So it's good to hear a positive one.
@@toyhacker4647 It was not negative. I was simply giving you my opinion. When talking about the options, just get to the point at hand!
This is absolutely incorrect. Firmware-locked batteries in consumer electronics and tools, like Milwaukee power tools and Dyson vacuums, use software to monitor battery health and enforce safety features. However, these locks often disable otherwise repairable batteries due to issues like undervoltage, forcing consumers to buy expensive replacements instead of making simple fixes. This practice aligns with anti-right-to-repair strategies, maximizing profits while contributing to waste and limiting user autonomy. We need to push for laws requiring access to diagnostics, schematics, and fair repair practices to combat these restrictive designs and promote sustainability.

Hey, I took the mechanism out too and I'm getting good movement in the arms and they stay static.
such a great motor - thanks for the video! Always wondered how it worked. I saw some of your other videos. If you haven't got one yet , may I suggest your getting a 3-D printer, they're extremely useful!
@@darrenupton9747 thanks for the comment. I have a printer but it's old and takes a lot of setting up. My son has a newer one which a lot easier but expensive. I'm trying to motorist a Geneva mechanism he printed at the moment.
Brilliant reverse engineering! Does anyone know how to dismantle the Dyson v7 DC charger unit without destroying it?
or, you could just buy a new charger, and save all of that effort
I suspect that the E and C markings on the pcb refer to a phototransistor. The Led and the phototransistor are so that the electronics "know" the mechanical position of the mechanism and the hands when self setting. There will be a wheel with slots, holes or a reflective surface between the LED and the phototransistor.
Thanks, you are correct. The second hand gear wheel has slots in it which pass between the diode and transistor. The LED is pulsed for 30 seconds and when the transistor doesn't respond the pulsing stops. the LED only takes 84 micro amps and the device without motors 160 micro Amps. the LED has a Vf of 1.17V. the transistor's resistance changes from 10k in light to 150 Mega Ohm in dark.
Thats pretty slick, thanks for the breakdown!
@@leehayes4019 Wow that was quick. Thanks for the comment.
@toyhacker4647 yeah m subscribed because you make great videos!
How dangerous would it be to connect 2 or more cells in parallel? The problem with vape cells is that they are quite small. Could the stronger cell cause the weaker cell to blow when equalizing the charge without a current limit?
I just replaced the diode and it worked. Thank you.

I like these little boards and use them a lot. I have no reason to fully understand them but I just watched pt1 & pt2 and a gentle breeze blew some of the fog away. I'm just about to stuff one in each of the solar lights I bought that appear only to have charge protection chips - 8pin but sanded tops with no hint of a number, classic AliX bargain basement junk with soldered wires on the unmarked lithium cell. Fascinating channel. You earned my subscription. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment. Glad it helped. The solar lights don't seem to be as good as they were. I had one with no protection found the cells outer case some distance away but never found the chemicals!
@@toyhacker4647 I prefer NiMH over lithium for small outdoor lights, they've lasted over a decade in some lights, always longer than the legs on the old style leds. Most lithium, even Panasonic, give up after a winter as there's no low temp cut out, never mind discharge protection. The only advantage of lithium cells is that they are higher Wh, free or very cheap & everywhere, even some disposable vape cells last a thousand cycles or so.
This is almost like asmr 😅
How to bypass vape sensor? I want to use a switch in it's place to convert it into mini power supply which can be tun on or off via switch
It isn't just a sensor but contains battery protection circuits and a timer. If you replace it you would need to add a battery protection circuit to prevent the cell going below 3V and 4V2 when charging.
