Top 10 Tips for Rookie Beekeepers with Laryssa Kwoczak - Beekeeping Made Simple
In this Galena Farms Beekeeper Feature we showcase Lisa Kwoczak from Beekeeping Made Simple as she shares the most important lessons she’s learned from 30 years of beekeeping.
Whether you're just starting or have been at it for years, these practical tips will help you avoid common mistakes and improve your beekeeping experience.
Here are the key takeaways:
- Start with a Langstroth-style beehive for easy access to equipment and help.
- Master queen spotting early, while your hive is small, for easier management later.
- Pay attention to bee space to prevent unwanted comb building.
- Understand that not all hives will survive - a 70% survival rate is normal.
- Use the correct frame sizes for each box and keep it consistent.
- Consider using all medium boxes and frames for simplicity.
- You're breeding bees, so manage swarming by splitting hives.
- Let queen cells stay in the hive and give them time to hatch.
- Practice lazy beekeeping - checking the hive less often can be beneficial.
- Remember, every hive is different and requires unique care.
Don’t miss out on these insights that can help you keep your bees happy and healthy!

My 10 frame hive came with only 5 frames. Ups had damaged it in shipment.Trying to remedy that is frustrating. Upon discovering that and trying to get in touch busybees also is not easy,no one answers the phone. The advertisement on their web site these things were Amish made. Surprised to find a label saying MADE IN CHINA! I DIDN'T KNOW THERE Amish in CHINA.

I just saw you message you sent an hour ago through the site and I will reply privately. Looks like you ordered the Hoover hive which is not Amish made. The Busy Bees Brand is made in Ohio by the Amish.

There are 2 yellow vinyl grates come with the kit. Nothin in the instructions or here where those go or what they do. Can you tell me whats the story with those, wishbone?

Those are queen excluders. I couldnt find the answer either. I did my own reserach, and you put them over the brood frames before putting the honey box and honey frames on top. The brood and honey frames self-regulate their spacing to allow free flow of bees and air up and down the boxes. With the queen excluder, the queen stays in the bottom and can't fly up. You use it to keep baby bees in cells in the brood box, and only honey in the honey box. Imo, it doesnt make sense to consider a brood and honey box as different boxes if you dont use a queen excluder, since she'll lay eggsin either place.

My hive didn't come with the small instruction sheet. I can't tell if you used glue on the frames for the super or brood foundations. Thanks for the video.

Anything you hammer together should have glue between the joint.
