My name's Tom and I'm a Forest Scientist. I'm curently finishing my PhD at the University of Stirling and Forest Research in the UK, where i'm trying to understand how trees and forests respond to extreme climate events such as drought. This channel is all about two things:
1) Helping others to learn how to tell stories, communicate cutting edge science and bring to life exciting new research through a comprehensive but easy to follow set of tutorials on how to make stunning animated films using industry standard tools such as Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and Premier Pro.
2) A new, personal journey! I'm only just starting to slowly teach myself the skills I need to make awesome films which I eventually hope will enbale me to 'up my game' in communicating science as widely as possible. The focus of these short films will be on micro-adventure that showcase some of the most beautiful aspects of the natural world, with a particular focus on where I live in Scotland!

Forests at the edge
In 2023 I spent 6 weeks in Central Chile and Argentinian Patagonia as part of a scientific research trip funded by @IUFRO to investigate the impact of climate change and extreme drought on the #forests of #Patagonia and #Chile. "Forests at the Edge" is a short #documentry film about this trip and the #science we are doing to help these forests adapt to #climatechange.

Good one
Amazing 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks, I just subscribed! I have one tip - When you scale them at 10:00, you only need to grab the circles and not the numbers, because the numbers are linked. If you grab the numbers, they scale independently of the circle as well as scaling WITH the circle since they're its children. That's why they shrank more than the circle did. ;-)
Thank you! Great Tutorial 👌
Important class
Some stunning drone footage! We recently spent two weeks in Scotland but it was very windy almost every day, so I struggled to get my drone out much. This has inspired me to try again in the future. Thanks for posting, you have a new subscriber! Andy
dont work
Great tutorial! The possibilities are ENDLESS 🤩😵💫🤯💪🏼 Thanks so much for your content!
For whoever needs it, 6:50 .value.toFixed(0)+"%"
is there advance animation playlist :) this is so very helpful
Hi! The video is very good, I am starting with after effects and your teaching is very useful to me. Can I ask you for help with something? When I want to edit the text and I put .toFixed I get an error and the program tells me that it can't read it. I use it in Spanish, is it just a language error? Thank you!
Wow! Amazing! Thank you so much!
Hi, I tried to use another icon but couldn't really create them in illustrator, can you please help?
Amazing tutorial ❤️❤️
Just amazing! 😁
Amazing!! Fantastic work, Tom!
Fellow PhD student here (computational linguistics). Thanks so much for making this! Data viz is generally not one of the strengths of the academic world --I hope that changes with our generation!
My pleasure I hope they were useful!! Thanks for the nice feedback 🙂
TIP: Link the "slider" to the "End" or "Start" of the shapes layer. This way you automate the work even more. Good tutorial! Thanks!
Please make a tutorial about how to make animated infographic shorts please i need it
Again dig ya bothy culture. Thanks mate
I dig your bothy culture. Yous r lucky to use them. Cheers

Thank you so much! This is a life saver I’m pretty new to AE 🫡
My pleasure! Super glad it was useful!
Thank you a lot!
How would I convert this to a mogrt file?
thank u
thank u man
Just started with After Effects today and your video helped me a lot with animating some charts, thanks a lot. 😊
My pleasure! Really glad you found it useful!!!
What if I want to animate a highly detailed chart/graph? For example: All Academy Award nominees and winners in the past 50 years by category (acting, editing, cinematography, costume, etc.). And let's say I have all of the information in an Excel spreadsheet. I want the data to move, appear, disappear, change colors. How do I create this in a video/film? Is After Effects the right tool?
effect("Slider Control")("Slider").value.toFixed(0)+"0%"
It's been a blessing that I found your channel.
oh my god this is awesome thank you!!!!
Thank you! Very helpful!
This the best channel to learn animation and its basics. you should be having more than millions of subscribers for such a valuable content. What are doing youtube algorithm ..........plz promote this channel. i am going share all of his videos to my social media accounts.
Nice video brother! Can these animations be added in a wix website? How does that work
I don’t have a Wix website myself but I’d imagine it’s perfectly possible. For my own WordPress based website I export any animations as a video and then upload it to my website. Alternatively you could upload your animation video to your own UA-cam channel and link to the video URL on your website, depending on what your doing exactly. Hope that helps!
Nice. I'm on the fence about purchasing one of these together with either the Atomos or BlackMagic recorders as the internal recording specs are pretty bleh. Did you manage to solve the Atomos issues? Was this recorded full frame or in crop? Any regrets or other notes about this combo?
Great pacing and sensational tutorial, it's people like you that give UA-cam a good name! Not selling anything, just a great tutorial.
Thanks for the awesome feedback, hope it was useful!
Thank you sooo much for this actually my midz is after effects infographics vedio and I don't know how to make in after effects finally I founded after alot of hurdles searching in UA-cam I hope it'll help me
This is awesome thanks 😍
Here's a simple expression for the rotation property of the wing: set first three keyframes (eg. 0, 50, 0). Then alt-click on the Rotation stopwatch to open up the Expression Editor and write: loopOut(). This will infinitely loop and means you can finesse the values by only changing a couple of keyframes.
Nice one Tom, straightforward and well explained. One tip that might help you is to use the menu command: Edit / Copy Expression Only - then paste.
You've captured beautiful shots! Scotland is a special place!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it, I couldn’t agree more, I love living here so much!
amigo. woohoo!fantatsic upload~📢
Thanks! Really glad you enjoyed it 🙂
What If I want to show a bar graph of more than 100%? Because currently, the Trim Path is not allowing more than 100%
